There are picturesque harbours and grand country houses set in vast acreages. There are impressive landmarks from the past such as Tintagel Castle, St Michael’s Mount and more standing stones and Neolithic sites than you can shake a stick at. They exist happily alongside the present day futuristic domes of Eden, the stately grey bulk of Tate St Ives, old Mine chimneys (sensibly bestowed with World Heritage status) and the spoil heaps of the clay pits near St Austell. 35 BEST OF CORNWALL 2020 However there is more to Cornwall’s appeal than It was clear that luck landmarks. • Newsletter 1:11 2019
3rd March 2017 STANDING OUT THE MAGAZINE FOR MOUNTS BAY ACADEMY Cover: Penlee Gallery Curation Project 1st November 2019 PRINCIPAL’S REPORT …follow your dreams We live in a world that moves at an astonishing pace, we are used to seeing the news in ‘sound bites’, We read communications on our devices in “textspeak”, the abbreviated language and slang commonly used with mobile phones, text messaging, or other internet-based communication such as email. We get used to using reading and writing short sentences that display well on a small device when instant messaging. We are even encouraged to listen to our music using “cloud based” services and watch our television “on demand” so that we can watch what we like when we like. This often results in us “binge viewing” a whole series of programmes all at once. Have you ever wondered why we do what we do? Could it be that we like stories that are longer than an instant message? Well there is another way of satisfying our urge to “binge” a story. We have a library full of them, they are called books. A book can take you to places in your mind that you would never have dreamt of, give you stories that will light up your imagination and expand your horizons. Books are great, we should read more of them. To help with that, I have themed the reception area to allow for an additional quiet space for you to use when reading, so relax, enjoy some of the great books we have to offer and see if they give you the inspiration to follow your dreams.

In keeping with Penzance’s wonderful location our theme this year is “Golowan – All at Sea” - a tongue in cheek invitation to celebrate our amazing maritime heritage, and reflect it in a blaze of nautical imagery. However, “All at Sea!” couldn’t be wider of the mark, as the focus of everyone has been to ensure that, while cherishing established traditions, new things are tried, new partnerships secured and Golowan goes from strength to strength. All the elements for a great weekend are here - the mid-summer torchlit procession, serpent dancing and fireworks, the manic Mock Mayor of the Quay ceremony, music and market stalls, parades… and so much more… Golowan’s Quay Fair offers all the fun of the fair on Battery Road from 21st – 25th June and – last, but not least – Golowan 2017 sees the return of the marquee in St Anthony’s Car Park where Big Tow Productions will host a range of events – including the Mock Mayor election.

  • Corpses, Coasts, and Carriages: Gothic Cornwall, 1840-1913
Corpses, Coasts, and Carriages: Gothic Cornwall, 1840-1913 Submitted by Joan Passey to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English in September 2019 This thesis is available for Library use on the understanding that it is copyright material and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgement. I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. Joan Passey Signature: ………………………………………………………….. Words: 91,425 1 Abstract While there are defined Irish, Welsh, and Scottish Gothic traditions, there has been a notable critical absence of a Cornish Gothic tradition, despite multiple canonical and less-canonical authors penning Gothic stories set in Cornwall throughout the long nineteenth century. This critical oversight is part of a longer tradition of eliding Cornwall from literary and cultural histories—even from those to which it has particular relevance, such as histories of the industrial revolution (in which its mining industry was a major contributor), and the birth of the tourist industry, which has shaped the county and its economy through to the present day. This thesis will rectify this gap in criticism to propose a Cornish Gothic tradition. It will investigate Gothic texts set in Cornwall in the long nineteenth century to establish a distinct and particular tradition entrenched in Cornwall’s own quest for particularity from other Celtic nations and English regions. It will demonstrate how the boom in Cornish Gothic texts was spurred by major changes occurring in the county in the period, including being the last county to be connected to the national rail network, the death of the mining industry, the birth of the tourist industry, large-scale maritime disaster on its coasts, and the resituating of the legendary King Arthur in Tintagel with the publication of Tennyson’s Idylls of the King.

  • Item 6A Appendix 1: Penlee House Draft Budget 2021-24 and Item 6A Appendix 2: Penlee House Reserve Position
Item 6(a) PENLEE HOUSE COMMITTEE - 23 NOVEMBER 2020 REPORT FOR DECISION REVIEW OF PENLEE HOUSE DRAFT BUDGET 2021-22 AND FORECAST BUDGET TO 2023-24 Recommendation: That the Penlee House Committee recommends this draft budget and forecast budgets to the Finance & General Purposes Committee. Background: This paper is to be read in conjunction with Item 6a Appendix 1: Penlee House draft budget 2021-24 and Item 6a Appendix 2: Penlee House Reserve Position Income It is more complex than usual to make predictions about the year ahead, as Covid-19 has impacted everything that we do. Members will also note that from 2022, two major sources of regular funding: the Cornwall Council Agency Fee and the NPO funding from Arts Council England (via Cornwall Museums Partnership) will cease. • We have based visitor numbers on 2019 numbers for 2021-22. This may be ambitious given that Covid restrictions may still be in place next year. However, 2020 does not give us enough meaningful data to base our predictions on at this stage. Admission fee increases were discussed at the Penlee House Committee meeting on 28 September and it was decided not to increase admission charges. • We have budgeted for a 2.5% increase on visitor numbers year on year from 2022-23. • We have based retail income on 2019 levels and budgeted for a 5% increase year on year, again, taking into account the possible impacts of Covid and restrictions on visitors. However, in summer 2021, we have budgeted an additional £10,000 income from the sale of a book to accompany the Laura Knight exhibition.
