    Franklin’s Accounts, 1737, Calendar 7. 1 Introduction: The 1737 accounts provide a series of glimpses into BF’s day-to-day family life. On one occasion (the only one for which we have any evidence), BF spoke sharply to Deborah concerning her careless bookeeping. Since the most expensive paper cost several times more than the cheapest, it was important to record either the price or the kind of paper. Deborah sold a quire of paper to the schoolteacher and poet William Satterthwaite on 15 Aug and did not record or remember what kind. After Franklin spoke to her, Deborah, in frustration, exasperation, and chagrin, recorded his words or the gist of them in the William Satterthwaite entry: “a Quier of paper that my Carles Wife for got to set down and now the carles thing donte now the prise sow I muste truste to you.” If she recorded the words exactly, BF may have spoken to Satterthwaite in her presence. That possibility, however, seems unlikely. I suspect that an irritated BF told her that he would have to ask Satterthwaite what kind of paper. One wonders if he had said anything to her earlier about the following minor charge: “Reseved of Ms. Benet 2 parchment that wass frows and shee has a pound of buter and 6 pens in money, 1.6., and sum flower but I dont now [know] what it cums to” (14 Feb). Franklin’s brother James died in 1735, and by 1737 BF was giving his sister-in-law Ann Franklin free supplies and imprints (21 and 28 May), for he did not bother to enter the amount.

RYBOLT, C.M., Ph.D., completed his seminary studies at the Vincentian seminary in Perryville, Missouri, and at De Andreis Seminary in Lemont, Illinois. He received a doctorate in biblical studies from Saint Louis University. He has taught in Vincentian seminaries in Saint Louis, Lemont, and Denver. He worked for the provincial of the Midwest Province from 1979 to 1981. He joined the board of trustees of DePaul University in 1981 and is currently a life trustee. He also served as a delegate from the Midwest Province to the international general assemblies of the Congregation in 1980, 1986, and 1998, and managed the archives of the province from 1980 to 1989. Reverend Rybolt also served as the director of the International Formation Center, a program for ongoing Vincentian education and formation in Paris, France. Currently, he is serving as a Vincentian Scholar- in-Residence at DePaul University.

    Sarum 105 Stoney Bank Road Thornbury Township HRP # 006 Complied by Mary Sue Boyle and company LLC West Chester, PA 2014 Sarum Genealogy John Taylor was born December 22nd, 1639 in Seend, Wiltshire, England. He married Hannah Osborn in Alderton, England. John was first noted in the colonies surveying Cape Henolpen (Whorekill) in July of 1679; prior to the arrival of William Penn. In July of 1684, Thomas Callohill, the father of William Penn’s second wife, hired Taylor to survey 5500 acres he had bought from Penn. He received 18 British pounds from Callohill for the Taylor family to come to Philadelphia. Taylor received 400 acres as well and served as Callohill’s agent in the colonies collecting rents. John, wife Hannah and daughter Elizabeth and sons Isaac and Jacob arrived and settled on Tinicum Island with relative Christopher Taylor, owner of the Island. Christopher Taylor immigrated with William Penn on the ship Welcome in 1682, having received a grant from Penn as well and an appointed member of the first Provincial Council 12.14.1682. Christopher was President Judge of Chester County which he held until death. Upon arrival Taylor rented a parcel in 1685 and soon after moved to 63 acres in Middletown Township. There is no record of his completion of the Callowhill survey. He and his heirs paid quit rent annually until 1686. He also received 16 shillings 4p annually as agent and kept 5% of all rent collected on lands he surveyed. In 1686 John Taylor died and Hannah moved to Thornbury with daughter Elizabeth and son Isaac.

    ^aper as a Qritical Qommodity 'During c the ^American Bseyolution HERE was a paper shortage in the American colonies even before the Battle of Lexington, but it grew more serious as Tthe war progressed and the need for paper increased. Prior to 1765 most of the paper used in the colonies was imported, and the struggling colonial paper mills, mostly located in Pennsylvania, were not able to meet the needs of the growing colonies. Therefore, when the merchants and colonial assemblies passed nonimportation agree- ments following the passage of the Stamp Act in 1765 and the Townshend Acts in 1767, the shortage soon became serious. By 1775 the residual of imported paper was nearly exhausted, and the fifty-three paper mills located in the colonies were soon found inadequate to the demands made upon them. Evidences of this shortage of paper are found in governmental documents, military orders and correspondence, publications of all kinds, and in the personal correspondence of the colonists. To meet the need the paper makers, the colonial governments, and even the Continental Congress took action to augment the output of paper. On July 19, 1776, the Continental Congress passed a resolution "that the paper makers in Pennsylvania be detained from proceeding with the associators to New Jersey/'1 where patriots were joining the armed forces. In the following month the Continen- tal Congress faced an emergency in the shortage of paper for cur- rency. The stock of paper at the Ivy Mills, built by Thomas Willcox and Thomas Brown in 1729 near Philadelphia, on which the Con- tinental currency had been printed, was entirely exhausted.
