Safety and security coordinator, Tim Knight, is among 10 finalists in the annual naming of Campus Safety Director of the Year by Campus Safety Magazine. Among Knight’s achievements is his work to create annual school resource officer summer training programs for active shooters, de-escalation, defensive tactics, bomb threats, CPR, child abuse and sexual assault. The winner of the Campus Safety Director of the Year title will be announced at the July Campus Safety Conference in Virginia.

Behind every great performance is a great teacher... Cane Bay High’s drama teacher, Edwin Hall has made it to the second round for the Excellence in Education Tony Award, presented by Carnegia Mellon University. Through the partnership with the Tony Awards and Carnegie Mellon University, the Excellence in Theatre Education Award was created to help recognize a K-12 theatre educator in the U.S. who embodies the highest standards of the profession and demonstrates a positive impact on the lives of students, advancement of the theatre profession and a commitment to excellence. The winner is announced at the annual Tony Awards ceremony in New York.

Cool Schools... Westview Primary and Cane Bay High were highlighted during February as Cool Schools on WBCD Channel 2 with Octavia Mitchell. Westivew Primary was highlighted as a fun and engaging community school that nurtures and sparks creativity in young minds. Cane Bay High’s Law Enforcement Academy was reported as a unique program that prepares students for entry-level positions in local, state and federal law enforcement agencies. The academy is a part of Cane Bay’s career programs, and is in partnership with the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office.

Selected to perform with honor choir.. Cane Bay High students Kandache Griffin and Ashleigh Allen represented the district on the honor choir at the American Choral Directors Association Regional Conference. This is one of the highest honors a high school singer can receive. Allen was also selected to perform with the Southern Region American Choral Director Association Honor choir. She was selected from students from 11 states and will represent Cane Bay High and the district in Kentucky.

The Junior Duck Stamp (JDS), a program for K-12 students, integrates wildlife and nature education with a visual arts curriculum. Students learn the importance of wetlands and waterfowl and use their knowledge to create a drawing or painting of one of the 46 native species of ducks, geese and swans and compete for a prize: a commemorative federal stamp. The JDS Stamp program is also a great opportunity for students to get out and explore wildlife for themselves. SEWE Kids for Conservation Poster Winners... Southeastern Wildlife Exposition invited all Tri-County students, grades 1st through 12th to participate in the Kids for Conservation arts competition. SEWE is working diligently to promote Kids for Conservation in the Tri-County area and engage all students in the importance of conservation. The Stratford High JROTC and Junior Varsity cyber security competition teams had strong performances at the state competition and advanced to the semifinals of the National Youth Cyber Defense Competition. During the National Youth Cyber Defense Competition, the varsity cyber security team earned an invitation to the 6th Annual Palmetto Cyber Defense Competition. The Palmetto Cyber Defense Competition (PCDC), is hosted by Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center (SPAWARSYSCEN) Atlantic in collaboration with the Lowcountry Chapter of the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA), and SC Cyber, and will be held in April. Home Telecom Directory Cover Art winners... Cane Bay High artist Fatima Maya Perez won first place in the Home Telecom Directory Cover Art Contest. The competition was a unique opportunity for district students to highlight their talent in art. The goal was for students to produce art that depicts an inspirational or beautiful scene in Berkeley County, or that spotlights a historical event or site from the area. Jackson Stevens a Goose Creek Primary student tied for first place in the elementary division of the artwork contest and placed second overall in the contest. Jackson’s artwork will be featured in the new issue of the Home Telecom Directory.

Lego team places in the Lego championship... The Berkeley Intermediate and Berkeley Middle BOLT Lego team won 3rd place in Robotics and the 1st Place Champions Award at the East State Championship. The team has been invited to compete in the LEGOLAND Open Invitational in California. Winners of the Children’s Book Challenge... Fifth-grade students were invited to write and illustrate a children’s book that discussed the history of electrification in South Carolina for the Berkeley Electric Cooperative EnlightenSC Children’s Book Challenge. Entries had to include information about electric cooperatives and the impact electricity has made on our lives. J. K. Gourdin Elementary fifth grade class was selected as the first place winner for the book challenge. Their book will be entered into the state- wide book contest of which one state-wide winner will be announced in April.

Schools have been hopping during the month of February. Berkeley Middle students volunteered at a rescue center for horses to learn about life skills, the NED show is a school-wide character education program that was performed at Boulder Bluff Elementary, students enjoyed an exciting day at the College of Charleston STEM day, Charleston Stage taught third grade Whitesville Elementary students bring history back to life, Cane Bay High celebrated Cultural Diversity Day, the Roaring Twenties was presented at Cane Bay Middle, schools thorough out the district held daddy daughter dances.

New football coaches for the district... Jason Winstead was selected as the varsity head football coach at Goose Creek High. Winstead was previously the defensive coordinator at South Point High School in Rock Hill.

The Hanahan Hawks have promoted offensive line coach David Morbitzer to the program’s top spot as varsity head football coach. Morbitzer has served as a track and field coach, winning a girls state championship in 2011 and a boys state championship in 2017.

Dennie McDaniel was named Stratford High’s new varsity football head coach. McDaniel came from St. John’s High were he served as head football coach and athletic director in 2015 and returned to Stratford in 2016 to continue his teaching and coaching career.

Goose Creek High dance team shines... At the Lugoff-Elgin Dane Team Invitational the Goose Creek High Dance Team received second place overall for their Varsity Pom Routine and third place overall for their Varsity Hip Hop Routine. The team also received a special judges award for best hip hop choreography. Senior Emily Williamson competed in the Varsity Senior solo, taking third place home. The team will compete at Nationals in March.

Cooper Youngblood no longer has to wonder what it’s like to be the best in the state. Youngblood became Timberland High’s first individual state champion on the mat since 2014. Youngblood had appeared on the big stage twice before, finishing third at 182 pounds last winter and outside the top four in 2016. He now trades in his wrestling singlet for a baseball uniform this spring. Youngblood was joined in the winner’s circle by another

Berkeley County School District wrestler, Cane Bay’s Jacob D’Ambrosio. D’Ambrosio, a senior, was No. 1 at 132 pounds in Class 4A. He was a runner-up at 138 pounds last winter. The duo prevented the school district from being shut out at state for the second year in a row. In 2017, no county grappler came out on top for the first time since 2010.

Cane Bay Fishing team does it again...

Eddie Cox and Colton Cox took the podium for the Cane Bay Fishing team at the Cobra Nation Tournament. The team placed third out of 95 teams with a 16 lb. 12 oz. weigh in.
