Hard Work Pays Off ! 38th Annual Achievement and Closing Ceremony Sunday April 27, 2014 6:00 PM Stern Center Ballroom 71 George Street Charleston SC 29424 "The only place success comes before work is in the dictionary” - Vince Lombardi, Hall of Fame Football Coach The Upward Bound Program, sponsored by the College of Charleston since 1975, is a college preparatory program designed to generate in its participants the skills and motivation necessary for success in education beyond high school. Upward Bound provides special academic and cultural opportunities to students who have expressed an interest in pursuing a post-secondary education and who have demonstrated the potential to succeed in post-secondary education. ____________________________________________________ Upward Bound students learn how to challenge themselves to better than they think they can, to set goals they can achieve and how to go after them so that they aren’t satisfied with “just good enough.” Upward Bounders learn how to use their resources to recognize and make the most of opportunities so that the work they put in pays off and they can grow from each experience. Congratulations, graduates. Be proud. This is just the Beginning. Our Keynote Speaker Selena Blair is currently the Director of Opportunity Network, a TRIO Student Support Services Program, at the University of South Carolina Upstate. After graduating Valedictorian of Kingstree Senior High School, Selena went on to obtain her Bachelor of Social Work degree from Limestone College and Master of Arts in Counseling from Webster University. From her humble beginnings as an administrative assistant at a community college, Selena’s passion for assisting low-income, first generation college students, students with disabilities, and working adults has always been prevalent. She is a true believer in the saying, “With hard work and determination, anything is possible.” For the past decade, she has garnered the respect of her peers by working to remove barriers faced by individuals like herself and has made numerous trips to Capitol Hill to advocate for increased funding and policy revisions to better serve disadvantaged students. In addition to being a wife and mother of three daughters – ages 16, 14, and 5, Mrs. Blair serves in various capacities on the state, regional, and national levels of the TRIO community, at New Hope Christian Church and within the Spartanburg Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. She is in the process of working to publish her first book and establishing a non-profit organization aimed at assisting adolescent girls with recognizing their potential and becoming the best they can be while embracing her personal mantra, “Failure is not an option.” 2013-2014 Upward Bound Participants Nigeria Alston Tamija Hampton Eryn Smalls Kenya Bracey Nicholas Hannah Jalai Smalls Antonio Brown Zoey Henderson Alexsys Smith Daquan Brown Miracle Hutchinson Valaiyya Smith-Rivers Destiny Brown Tabrieal Jones Briana Stroud Diaje Brown Adaijha Kwot Egypt Stroud Khyla Brown Elkanah Ladia Terrance Taylor Christopher Burch Pablo Leyva Paul Thieman Michael Burns London Mack Terrence Thurman Sasha Castro Eldrick McLean Desmond Triplett Kevius Coaxum Richard McNeil Destiny Triplett LeDejah Coaxum Ashley Miller Leah Turner Adrienne J.
