Using critical linguistic ethnography, this study traces how 아미 microbloggers’ digital conversations embody Jenkins’ principles of participatory fandom and Wenger’s characteristics of communities of learning practice. By creating Wei’s multilingual translanguaging spaces, 아미 assemble interest-based collectives Pérez González calls translation adhocracies, who collaboratively access resources, produce content and distribute fan compositions within and beyond fandom members. Whereas boy group content may market towards the female gaze, their content is crafted by a largely male creative staff or the idols themselves, affording the idols agency over their choices or placing them in power holding positions. The thesis consists of two parts. First I conducted a content analysis of 95 lyrics from the book, Hip-Hop & Rap: Complete Lyrics for 175 Songs (Spence, 2003). The songs I analyzed were performed by male artists whose lyrics repeated misogynist and sexist messages. Second, I conducted a focus group with young female university students who self-identify as fans of hip-hop and/or rap music. In consultation with my former thesis supervisor, I selected women enrolled in interdisciplinary programmes focused on gender and race because they are equipped with an academic understanding of the potential damage or negative effects of anti-female or negative political messaging in popular music. My study suggests that the impact of hip-hop and rap music on young women is both positive and negative, creating an overarching feeling of complexity for some young female listeners who enjoy music that is infused with some lyrical messages they revile.

First the author explored the motivations behind Korean music groups’ use of English. Next the author looked semantically at Korean band names that incorporate English words and Korean songs that incorporate English lyrics. She discussed what makes this new practice of incorporating English suc- cessful or unsuccessful in Korean pop music. The article concludes that the use of English in Korean pop music is becoming increasingly popular, and that this may be a bad thing if extra care isn’t taken to ensure accuracy.w Korean popular music (known as K-Pop) is sweeping the globe. Korean pop artist PSY’s “Gangnam Style” is currently the only video on YouTube to receive over one billion views. From Asia to Europe to South America, and yes, even to the United States, K-Pop has found millions of fans worldwide.
