Photosynthesis in a desert tree is driven by the highest light and temperature Daphna Uni1,3, Efrat Sheffer1, Gidon Winters2, and Tamir Klein3 1The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, The faculty of agriculture, Rehovot, Israel ([email protected]) 2The Dead Sea-Arava Science Center, Tamar Regional Council, 86910 Neve Zohar, Israel 3Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences, Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot, Israel Among living tree species, Acacia raddiana (Savi) and Acacia tortilis (Forssk), species of the legume family, populate some of the hottest and driest places on earth. Our research investigates the physiological processes underlying the unique survival of these trees in their extreme environmental conditions. We measured Acacia trees in their natural habitat once a month for two years to unravel the photosynthesis dynamics and water relations. Leaf gas exchange and leaf water potential were measured, as well as atmospheric and soil parameters. Daily and annual gas- exchange curves showed higher carbon assimilation during noon and in summer, when temperature and radiation were maximal (44°C, 2000 µmol m-2s -1), and the air was dry (21% RH). Additionally, we found that the maximum rate of carbon assimilation was at PAR (photosynthetic active radiation) of 3000 µmol m-2s -1. Our results suggest that water did not drive net carbon assimilation but rather light and temperature, which are already close to their maximum in our hyper-arid ecosystem. In view of its being an internationally recognized centre for climatotherapy, it is of interest to study both its UV intensity and attenuation as a function of wavelength relative to other sites. In order to provide a basis for intercomparison of the radiation intensity parameters measured at the Dead Sea, a second set of identical parameters were being measured simultaneously at a second site, located at a distance of ca. 65 km and to the west and situated above sea-level (Beer Sheva at 315 m a.s.l.). Meir** Moshe Schwartz*** Ben-Gurion University of the Negev Both basins of the Dead Sea (DS) have been deeply damaged in the last 50 years by anthropogenic intrusion in its water balance. The northern basin is receding, together with the fresh water aquifers along its shores. This has led to the formation of sinkholes, subsidence areas and landslides, affecting wide coastal segments, and bringing development to a halt along the western DS shore. In the southern basin, the water level is rising, threatening the tourist-hotel area lying on its shores. This overview of planning and decision making in the last four decades shows that environmental degradation, conflict between industry and tourism, conservation versus development, water scarcity, unsustainable water and wastewater manage- ment have remained persistent problems. Coordination among agents of manage- ment and planning, missing for decades, is essential to cope with the problems of the DS region, which are expected to grow increasingly severe on both DS shores, in the absence of sustainable solutions. Critical decisions made recently have to be effectively implemented to avoid a catastrophe. Wendt Institute of Geography, University of Gdańsk, Bażyńskiego 4, 80-309 Gdańsk, Poland, e-mail: [email protected] Abstract: The Dead Sea along with Jerusalem belongs to one of the most well-known spots visited by tourists in Israel. Because of many factors, such as the water level of the Dead Sea at a depth of 430 m b.s.l. (in 2015), average salinity of 26%, hot springs and many healing salts located there, it is a unique tourist attraction on a global level. Its attractiveness is heightened by its proximity to other sites of interest , such as the Jewish fortress at Masada, Jericho, Qumran, where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found, as well as Petra, Madaba and Al-Karak on the Jordanian side of the Dead Sea. High salinity and a microclimate create perfect conditions for the development of health resorts and medical tourism. Extracting healing salts from its waters for the needs of the chemical industry is important for both the economy and medical tourism. However, as a consequence of the agricultural and urban use of the waters of the River Jordan, which flows into the Dead Sea, a persistent decrease in the lake water level has been observed over the last century. This has created a number of economic and political issues. The problems which still have to be resolved are associated with the Red Sea-Dead Sea Conduit (Canal), the division of Jordan’s water resources, conservation of the unique reservoir of the Dead Sea and the threat of hindering the development of tourism within the region.
