  • First Record of Horned Puffin in the North Atlantic and Tufted Puffin in High Arctic Greenland Kurt K
RESEARCH NOTE First record of horned puffin in the North Atlantic and tufted puffin in High Arctic Greenland Kurt K. Burnham,1 Jennifer L. Burnham,2 Jeff A. Johnson,3 Bridger W. Konkel,1 Jack Stephens1 & Hannah Badgett1 1High Arctic Institute, Orion, IL, USA; 2Department of Geography, Augustana College, Rock Island, IL, USA; 3Department of Biological Sciences, Institute of Applied Sciences, University of North Texas, Denton, TX, USA Abstract Keywords Transarctic movement; sea ice; North-west An accelerating decrease in summer sea-ice extent in the Arctic Ocean and Passage; range shift; Fratercula corniculate; Canadian Arctic Archipelago (North-west Passage) is predicted to increase the Fratercula cirrhata movement of species between the North Pacific and North Atlantic oceans. Here we report observations of two Subarctic North Pacific puffin species in the Correspondence North Atlantic near the coast of north-west Greenland. We observed a horned Kurt K. Burnham, High Arctic Institute, 603 10th Avenue, Orion, IL 61273, USA. E-mail: puffin Fratercula( corniculata) repeatedly during the summer months of 2002–06 [email protected] and 2013–19 and a single tufted puffin F.( cirrhata) in 2019. While single tufted puffins have been observed a few times in the North Atlantic, this is the first record of a horned puffin in the North Atlantic, and the first record for both horned and tufted puffins in north-west Greenland. In 2019, both puffin spe- cies were observed simultaneously at an Atlantic puffin F.( arctica) colony. Introduction Island, Alaska, in 1986 (71.2°N, 155.7°W; Divoky et al. 2015). The species has subsequently been observed as far Recent changes in weather and climate have resulted in a east as Herschel Island, Canada (69.6°N, 138.8°W; eBird northern range expansion for many avian species breeding 2020) in August 2014, 2016 and 2019, and the MacKenzie in temperate zones in the Palearctic and Nearctic (Thomas Shelf, Canada (single individual; 70.4°N, 130.4°W; Wong & Lennon 1999; Hitch & Leberg 2007; Virkkala & Lehi- et al.
