2016 1 a Message from the Leadership CHALLENGER CENTER - 2016 1 A MESSAGE FROM THE LEADERSHIP Dear Friends, This year marked the 30th anniversary of the loss of the Challenger and its incredible crew: Commander Francis R. “Dick” Scobee, Teacher-in-Space Payload Specialist Sharon Christa McAuliffe, Pilot Michael J. Smith, Mission Specialists Judith A. Resnik, Ellison S. Onizuka and Ronald E. McNair, and Payload Specialist Gregory B. Jarvis. These individuals weren’t just astronauts, they were passionate, enthusiastic, determined human beings willing to risk their lives for the greater good. Their particular mission was different. Aptly known as the Teacher in Space program, the mission was designed to inspire students, honor teachers, and spur interest in math, science, and space exploration. With teacher Christa McAuliffe on board, the crew had planned for lessons, activities, and live downlinks with students. After the mission, Christa would return to her classroom and share the experience with kids around the world. But when the mission ended tragically, the families worked together to find a way to keep it alive. They created Challenger Center to remind the world not how their loved ones were lost, but what they were passionate about and how they lived their lives. We are confident that this organization and the work we do would make them proud. The crew would love the enthusiasm of our Flight Directors, the sheer energy and excitement from the children who visit our Centers, and the dedication that each one of you – our supporters – demonstrate year after year. These individuals were inspiring the future 30 years ago, and we’re so pleased, thanks to all of you, that their mission continues to live on today. Throughout 2016, we honored the crew with memorials, tributes, and special events and celebrated the many accomplishments of the organization. People like Willard and Nancy Lines, who have supported us since 1987, make it possible for us to open new Challenger Learning Centers, develop new programs like Expedition Mars, and inspire 03 Our 30 Year History students like Sean Robinson and Toni York to pursue science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers. In these 30 years, we have given 4.5 million students the chance to explore endless possibilities through our innovative, hands-on STEM programs. We have taken kids to the Moon and Mars, challenged them to intercept Comets, and given Inspired Alumni them the opportunity to study the earth from the International Space Station. But with the increasing need for a STEM 07 literate society and STEM qualified workers, we know our work is just beginning. Today’s students are tomorrow’s innovators and leaders. Every day our programs work to ignite the potential within each student, opening their eyes to Education Programs new skills and ideas that can lead to success in their careers and lives. In 1984, President Reagan announced that a school teacher would be selected to become the first private citizen to fly on a space-shuttle mission. Following the tragedy, the families of the crew come together, committed to carry on the spirit of their loved ones. What do you remember most from your experience? There was an entire unit about preparing to visit the Challenger Learning Center. I remember the excitement of it, and EDUCATION: understanding that this trip was going to be something really cool and special. This was probably the start of being interested in space and space travel. Having been raised on Star Trek, the idea of space travel was a normal part of my life, something I actually didn’t think about much. Husband, age forty-five and the commander of Columbia. Commander Husband was a colonel in the United States air force. He was selected as an astronaut in 1994 and prior to this mission had logged two hundred thirty hours in space. His home was Amarillo, Texas; William C. McCool, age forty-one and the pilot for the mission. He was a commander in the United States navy and a former test pilot. Commander McCool became an astronaut in 1996, and this was his first space flight. His home was Lubbock, Texas; Michael P. Anderson, age forty-three and the payload commander for Columbia. Lieutenant Colonel Anderson was an air force man who grew up as the son of an air force man. Selected as an astronaut in 1994, he had previously logged over two hundred eleven hours in space.

    American Heritage Day DEAR PARENTS, Each year the elementary school students at Valley Christian Academy prepare a speech depicting the life of a great American man or woman. The speech is written in the first person and should include the character’s birth, death, and major accomplishments. Parents should feel free to help their children write these speeches. A good way to write the speech is to find a child’s biography and follow the story line as you construct the speech. This will make for a more interesting speech rather than a mere recitation of facts from the encyclopedia. Students will be awarded extra points for including spiritual application in their speeches. Please adhere to the following time limits. K-1 Speeches must be 1-3 minutes in length with a minimum of 175 words. 2-3 Speeches must be 2-5 minutes in length with a minimum of 350 words. 4-6 Speeches must be 3-10 minutes in length with a minimum of 525 words. Students will give their speeches in class. They should be sure to have their speeches memorized well enough so they do not need any prompts. Please be aware that students who need frequent prompting will receive a low grade. Also, any student with a speech that doesn’t meet the minimum requirement will receive a “D” or “F.” Students must portray a different character each year. One of the goals of this assignment is to help our children learn about different men and women who have made America great. Help your child choose characters from whom they can learn much.

WANG PAYLOAD SPECIALIST PERSONAL DATA: Born June 16, 1940, in Mainland China. He is a Physicist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California, and is a U.S. citizen. He is married, and has two sons. EDUCATION: Received a bachelor of science degree in physics in 1967, a master of science degree in physics in 1968, and a doctorate in physics in 1971, from the University of California at Los Angeles. ORGANIZATIONS: Member, American Physical Society, Materials Research Society, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Sigma Xi, and a Fellow in the Acoustical Society of America. EXPERIENCE: After completing his doctorate, Dr. Wang joined the California Institute of Technology Jet propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in 1972, as a senior scientist. He is currently Program Manager for Materials Processing in Space. At JPL he was responsible for the inception and development of containerless processing science and technology research. He is the Principal Investigator (PI) on the Spacelab 3 mission NASA Drop Dynamics (DDM) experiments, PI on the NASA SPAR Flight Experiment #77-18 "Dynamics of Liquid Bubble," PI on the NASA SPAR Flight Experiment #76- 20 "Containerless Processing Technology," and PI on the Department of Energy Experiment "Spherical Shell Technology." Dr. Wang has been conducting precursor drop dynamics experiments for the DDM in ground-based laboratories employing acoustic levitation systems, neutral buoyancy systems and drop towers, and in the near weightless environment provided by JSC's KC-135 airplane flights and SPAR rockets. These flights have helped to define the experimental parameters and procedures in the DDM experiments to be performed on Spacelab 3.

Perhaps the most outstanding feature of this train is the Observa- tion-Lounge Car, named the "Copper King," embodying remarkable innovations in railroad development. The deft decorations, unique and colorful, are by Mrs. W. A. Harriman, wife of the Chairman of the Board of the Union Pacific. Her contribu- tion to the unusual interior decorations of other Union Pacific streamline trains has created con- siderable favorable comment. The "Copper King" is the first "light-condi- tioned" car in railroading and the first in which copper has been used so extensively for interior decoration, finishings and appointments. The final touch of the selections of color schemes for the furniture, the decorating, upholstering, carpeting and the exquisite buffet and other interior appoint- ments was added by Mrs. Harriman. Pullman passengers enjoy complete relaxation in the -Copper King". The “Copper King" Observation-Lounge Car. • As the name implies, the "Copper King" is resplendent in shimmering copper. The side walls have satin finished copper paneling. Tables, smoke-stands and other accessories are constructed of copper bronze and the same metal has been skillfully used in the specially designed furniture. The service buffet, near the entrance to the car, is a harmonious symphony of copper and glass. As a result of using copper as the dominant decorative note, the interior has a rich glowing beauty enhanced by the contrasting deep green and henna material with which lounges and chairs are upholstered.

    Christa’s Lost Lessons Lost Lesson 1 Christa’s name for her mission: THE ULTIMATE FIELD TRIP (video link) Introduction: Besides the six lost science lessons scheduled for filming aboard Challenger, two televised “live lessons” were planned for the sixth day of the mission. The time scheduled for each was fifteen minutes. These were to be aired on the Public Broadcasting Network (PBS) at 10:40 a.m. and 10:40 p.m. Central Standard Time. The first lesson (actually given its name by Christa) was “The Ultimate Field Trip”. It dealt with explaining and describing to students the general layout of the shuttle. Additionally, crew members (Commander Dick Scobee, Pilot Mike Smith and others) would be introduced. The video archives contained this wonderful clip of Christa actually “walking through” a practice run of both live lessons. Christa’s Lost Lessons - Lost Lesson 1 The second live lesson is addressed in some detail in Bob Mayfield’s paper. It was entitled “Where We’ve Been, Where We’ve Going” Background: The background description for the first live lesson, “The Ultimate Field Trip”, comes from the NASA publication “Teacher in Space Project.” It is stated below: “This lesson is based on a quotation by Teacher in Space Christa McAuliffe who described her opportunity to go into space as ‘the ultimate field trip.’ Viewer Objectives: 1. Though more than a score of years after the loss of Challenger’s crew, STS-118 was a reminder of the morning of January 28, 1986. That week Christa McAuliffe planned to perform both live and filmed science lessons. These lost lessons, prepared for the nation and world’s school children, were never done. This project delves into those undone educational activities. Indeed, after studying its content, all will appreciate NASA’s, Christa’s and Barbara’s efforts as well as Bob Mayfield’s in carefully researching, preparing and training for the performance of the six “Challenger lost lessons.” Though lost in the sense that they perished with Challenger and her crew, recounting, redoing, and examining them is, in a sense, a resurrection.
