Taiwan-WP-21-22.Pdf Dear future volunteers! Welcome to Taiwan- The Heart of Asia! 歡迎! Huānyíng! We are delighted to know that you are interested to spend your fantastic volunteering year with us in Taiwan. In this booklet, you will find the ICYE Taiwan Work Profile with the placements available during the ICYE programme 2021-2021. You may also find information about each placements by visiting the ICYE Federation website. Important point to note before you continue reading this booklet: We hope you could be more open-minded and free all the stereotypes you might have. Due to the resident permit regulation, kindly note that you shall stay at the same project during your exchange period in Taiwan. Only if there are certain serious cases it might be necessary to change the project. Most of the placements are located in the remote area, please understand that basically we are unable to fulfil your wish to be placed in a certain region or city. (For example: Taipei or any other big cities) Please note that we cannot promote personal careers by offering university studies or attend language centre’s studies. Please be prepared that your work might also include cleaning (both for male and female). We have some placements that the exchangees will be working and living in the same projects. Therefore, you (especially older or male exchangees) shall be prepared that you might live in the projects. Please be aware of that you are part of the work colleagues at your project, not just like a “visitor”. You have your own responsibility and can only take time off when the project agrees you to do so. This can sometimes be very difficult as it limits the amount of freedom you have. Please read it carefully and fill in the preference list at the final page. Kindly note that we are unable to guarantee you will be placed in the project of your choice, however we will definitely try our best to accordance you the most suitable placement for you. We look forward to see you soon! • Knowledge Interaction and Spatial Dynamics in Industrial Districts
sustainability Article Knowledge Interaction and Spatial Dynamics in Industrial Districts Hai-Ping Lin 1,2 ID and Tai-Shan Hu 2,* ID 1 Department of Architecture and Urban Planning, Chung Hua University, Hsinchu City 300, Taiwan; [email protected] 2 Department of Urban Planning, National Cheng Kung University, Tainan City 701, Taiwan * Correspondence: [email protected]; Tel.: +886-6-275-7575 (ext. 54224) Received: 31 May 2017; Accepted: 8 August 2017; Published: 11 August 2017 Abstract: The knowledge economy plays a leading role in current socioeconomic development and has changed industrial development. This study addresses whether changes in industrial development have improved the knowledge innovation, technical level, and productive efficiency of industries. Taiwanese industries were typically labor and technology-intensive and policy-oriented manufacturing industries in the past. This study analyzes the change in the spatial distribution of industries in southern Taiwan, and further examines the effect of knowledge interactions between industries and the region on industrial development, as well as the restrictions and opportunities for future development. Industries in southern Taiwan have formed a solid foundation based on policies promoted in the past. Nevertheless, an over-reliance on policy guidance has impeded breakthroughs and motivation to learn. Analytical results indicate that industries with stable and changing clusters achieve sustainable economic growth by creating links for innovative knowledge interactions through collaboration with suppliers and competitors. Accordingly, knowledge sources depend not only on internal research and development but also on external interactions to stimulate innovation. Restated, the input of key knowledge generates a high output, provides opportunities for industry transformation, and decreases resource consumption to achieve environmental sustainability during development.

  • Tongue-Tied Taiwan: Linguistic Diversity and Imagined Identities at the Crossroads of Colonial East Asia
Tongue-Tied Taiwan: Linguistic Diversity and Imagined Identities at the Crossroads of Colonial East Asia Yu-Chen Eathan Lai This thesis has been submitted on this day of April 15, 2018 in partial fulfillment of the degree requirements for the NYU Global Liberal Studies Bachelor of Arts degree. 1 Yu-Chen Eathan Lai, “Tongue-Tied Taiwan: Linguistic Diversity and Imagined Identities at the Crossroads of Colonial East Asia,” Undergraduate Thesis, New York University, 2018. A history of repeated colonization and foreign occupation created in Taiwan a severe language gap spanning three generations, and left its people in an anxious search for the island’s “linguistic” and “national” identity. Taiwanese speakers of indigenous Austronesian languages and Chinese dialects such as Hokkien and Hakka have historically endured the imposition of two different national languages: Japanese since 1895 and Mandarin since 1945. In this project, I draw on anthropological perspectives and media analysis to understand the ideologies and symbols vested upon different languages and codes that still circulate within different media today. My research primarily investigates an autoethnographic report on a family history, several museum and gallery exhibits, as well as two different documentaries, all centered on Hokkien speakers in Taiwan. I argue that a future generation’s narrative construction of an authentic Taiwanese identity must be rooted in the island’s past and present reality of linguistic and cultural diversity.
