Behind one of the dams a small lake, the Vordere Blaue Gumpe, was still in existence until 23 August 2005. The lake was a natural sediment sink, decoupling an area of about 1.6 km2 from fluvial sediment export out of the sediment cascade of the Reintal valley. The bergsturz event occurred about 200 years ago. It was dated by evaluating historical maps, paintings, photographs and sketches. Present research is focused on multi-temporal changes of the alluvial deposits of the delta by analysis of aerial photos and geodetic surveying. Volume loss of the lake is closely related to bed load input during extreme events and shows the geomorphic coupling of hillslope and channel systems. From regression analyses of the annual volumetric change of the lake volume, the life-expectancy of the lake was estimated to be about 15 years, before an extreme high magnitude event in August 2005 filled the lake completely with sediment. Now, after the filling of the lake, with the coupling of the catchment area of the Vordere Blaue Gumpe to downstream fluvial sediment export, higher solid load transport is expected in the lower reaches with possible negative effects on infrastructure. -

McWeeny Dean, College of Fine Arts 3 ABSTRACT GUSTAFSON, ADAM R., Ph.D., June 2011, Interdisciplinary Arts The Artistic Patronage of Albrecht V and the Creation of Catholic Identity in Sixteenth- Century Bavaria Director of Dissertation: Dora Wilson Drawing from a number of artistic media, this dissertation is an interdisciplinary approach for understanding how artworks created under the patronage of Albrecht V were used to shape Catholic identity in Bavaria during the establishment of confessional boundaries in late sixteenth-century Europe. This study presents a methodological framework for understanding early modern patronage in which the arts are necessarily viewed as interconnected, and patronage is understood as a complex and often contradictory process that involved all elements of society. First, this study examines the legacy of arts patronage that Albrecht V inherited from his Wittelsbach predecessors and developed during his reign, from 1550-1579. Albrecht V‟s patronage is then divided into three areas: northern princely humanism, traditional religion and sociological propaganda. -

Welcome to Alpenwelt Karwendel! These two mountain bikers have had a good laugh. They are returning from a break at Vereiner Alm. In the deep south of Germany, at the border with Austria, a pleasant valley with undula- ting meadows, lakes and streams extends between rocky peaks, forested mountain flanks and hills. Alpenwelt Karwendel with the three Upper Bavarian municipalities of Mittenwald, Krün and Wallgau is surrounded by four mountain massifs: the Karwendel mountains and the Soiern group to the East, the Ester mountains to the North and the Wetterstein mountains to the South-West. Because of this, the region is the ideal starting point for all kinds of mountain bike and cycling tours. If you like to take it easy, you can linger in the valley between the flower meadows, lakes and the expansive river landscape of the Isar with its shingle and gravel banks. High resolution quantification of slope–channel coupling in an alpine geosystem MARTIN BIMBÖSE, KARL-HEINZ SCHMIDT & DAVID MORCHE Institute for Geosciences, Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg, 06099 Halle/Saale, Germany [email protected] Abstract Fluvial sediment transport in alpine rivers is strongly connected to available sediment which comes from slope source areas (talus and debris cones). Consequently, the quantification of slope–channel coupling in terms of sediment supply to the river is a major task for fluvial sediment budget studies. Sometimes, the more interesting and useful study sites are located in dangerous areas and field work is difficult, if not impossible. Due to the emerging technology of laser-scanning (both terrestrial and airborne) it is now possible to obtain high resolution earth surface data for use in sediment budget studies. The Reintal Valley (Bavarian Alps) is a natural high-mountain laboratory where sediment transport processes and slope– channel coupling can be studied in detail. Due to a 2005 dam-break flood, the river system is in a state of disequilibrium, making it an exceptional study site for investigating these processes. The sediment flux from the sources to the river channel was quantified by using the innovative terrestrial laser-scanning (TLS) methodology. During the 2008 field season the sediment sources fed the Partnach River with more than 2600 t of sediment. Only a minor part was transported as bed load. -

Mother Benedicta Bauer of Heilig Kreuz monastery assured the bishop of Regensburg,[1] Germany, their volunteers for an American mission would be perfectly safe because the Benedictine monk Dom Boniface Wimmer promised to provide for their spiritual welfare and assist them in their temporal affairs. On April 4, 1853, he had written that the sisters might start for America as soon as the arrangements could be made. He would receive them at St. Vincent's College in western Pennsylvania where they could study the English language. He, himself, "would attend to everything else."[2] With the missionaries already three days into their transatlantic journey, Dom Wimmer sounded an entirely different tune in a letter to his friend Abbot Gregory Scherr of Metten, Germany. "In the near future I shall have to go to New York again to meet Dominican Sisters that the Convent of the Holy Cross is sending me as a cross (as if I did not as yet have enough crosses)." He would have to displace his own people in order to house the nuns "until such a time that I can find a suitable place for them." Williamsburg, Brooklyn, was a possibility since it had a German pastor, Father Raffeiner, who was "disposed to take them." The monk wished he had never gotten mixed up in the project to begin with. He blamed Mother Benedicta, who "did not cease to beg me and so I agreed, or rather promised, to help as much as I could to find a place for them outside of our diocese."[3] Two letters, two well intentioned people, two very different versions of a German mission project that would eventually lead to twelve active congregations of Dominican women in the United States—"the Regensburg Tree." First, there would have to be a collision of the two plans on a dock in lower Manhattan, and once again, adjustment of a dream to the reality of where the real need existed. -
