M. Forster’s canonical modernist novel Howards End, members of a wealthy English family, the Wilcoxes, discuss a young woman, Margaret Schlegel. “Oh, I forget, she isn’t really English,” the sister comments, to which her brother replies, “She’s a cosmopolitan…. I admit I’m rather down on cosmopolitans. My fault doubtless. I cannot stand them …” (81). What has marked Margaret as a cosmopolitan is her German father, her travels on the continent and her interest in other cultures. All of this seems quite unremark- able from the perspective of the twenty-!rst century, but in the in- tense nationalisms preceding the First World War—Forster’s novel was published in 1906—the Wilcoxes see the Schlegel sisters, both born and raised in England, as somehow failing to have a “proper” national character. Forster’s narrative, however, is less concerned with national identity than with working through the tensions within the root meaning of cosmopolitan: “citizen of the world” from the Greek kosmos (world) and politēs (citizen). "e Schlegel’s German father sees himself as a “countryman of Hegel and Kant” (23), and, in the words of Evelyn Cobley, “what the Schlegel children inherit from the German side of their lineage is their cultural sophistication and ide- alistic intellectualism” (278). Unlike the Wilcoxes, the Schlegel sisters are able to respond to others with openness and empathy, and these qualities too form their cosmopolitan inheritance. "ey are citizens of the world in the sense that they approach others as potentially their co-citizens. In contrast, the Wilcox men can also claim to be citizens of the world, not in the sense of any interest in other cultures, but rather because their businesses traverse national boundaries in the name of global capitalism. As Cobley puts it, Forster foregrounds “the contrast between cosmopolitanism as the circulation of ideas forming 1 Pamela McCallum our cultural identity and cosmopolitanism as the circulation of capital in arena of economic activity” (278). Forster is prescient in his juxtaposition of a cosmopolitanism of ideas and a#ect with the instrumental orientation of global capitalism, and there is no doubt that the interconnections and interpenetration of the two have deepened during the twentieth century and after as migration of populations across the world and the penetration of corporate invest- ment into new spaces of production have increased exponentially. It comes as no surprise, then, that the contemporary British writer Zadie Smith returns to engage Howards End in her exploration of transatlan- tic ethnicities and aesthetics in her novel On Beauty. How might these questions and ideas translate into theoretical re$ections? In the Clare Hall Tanner lectures at Cambridge University, delivered in the spring of 2001, Anthony Appiah, one of the foremost contemporary theorists of cosmopolitanism, argues that “soul making”—the production of human identities—is not given, but rather is produced “in the way in which we are seen and treated by others” (Hawthorn). Appiah suggests that it is possible to enter sympathetically and constructively into the life of another. "e ethics Appiah sketches out here requires the ability to imagine social di#erence within the shared life-worlds of multicultural societies in the twenty-!rst century, and literature is one site where these processes might take shape. "ese experiences of reading will be chal- lenging, marked by hesitations and sometimes by failure, and always subject to rethinking and revisiting, but they open up the possibility of respectfully entering the world of others. "is special issue on “the cosmopolitan novel” explores some of the questions raised by Appiah and other theorists of contemporary cosmo- politanism: Bruce Robbins, Pheng Cheah, Berthold Schoene, Timothy Brennan, Rebecca Walkowitz—the list could go on. Contributors take up a wide range of narrative and cultural texts both canonical and emer- gent: Salman Rushdie and Peter Carey; Yiyun Li, Catherine Bush and Dave Eggers. ARIEL is grateful to the guest editors of the issue, Emily Johansen and Soo Yeon Kim, who have brought together a productive and provocative group of articles. On one side, antisemitism appears as a pressing contemporary problem, intimately connected to an intensification of hostility to Israel. Opposing accounts downplay the fact of antisemitism and tend to treat the charge as an instrumental attempt to de-legitimize criticism of Israel. I address the central relationship both conceptually and through a number of empirical case studies which lie in the disputed territory between criticism and demonization. The paper focuses on current debates in the British public sphere and in particular on the campaign to boycott Israeli academia. Sociologically the paper seeks to develop a cosmopolitan framework to confront the methodological nationalism of both Zionism and anti-Zionism. It does not assume that exaggerated hostility to Israel is caused by underlying antisemitism but it explores the possibility that antisemitism may be an effect even of some antiracist forms of anti- Zionism.

University, Shikohabad, Uttar Pradesh, India-283135 Abstract Through its close study of Night of the Golden Butterfly by Tariq Ali, this paper makes an attempt to study how the novel offers an alternate account of Pakistan’s political and cultural history through the medium of fiction. History as a tool of reconstruction of experience used by the dominant powers is often seen to be in clash with individual reconstruction of the experience through imagination in the form of literary narratives. This query about the general nature of representation gets attached to some very debatable questions prevailing among the contemporary Pakistanis and those mainly focus on the issues of identity, culture, race, and religion. Unlike the rest of the novels in the Islam Quintet, the novel is set in the modern times narrating an account of contemporary issues pertaining to western imperialism, rise of religious fanaticism, military-mullah-feudal nexus in Pakistan, and immigrant experiences. The paper tries to show how the novel not only takes a hard look at the western imperialism for its devastating impact on the colonized world, but in a self-reflexive way, also criticizes the Muslim societies for adopting the path of self-destructive religious fundamentalism with reference to Ali’s own native country, Pakistan, referred to as “Fatherland” in the novel.     ariel: a review of international english literature ISSN 0004-1327 Vol. 43 No. 4 Pages 97–122 Copyright © 2013 Masks Or Souls?: Halide Edib’s Politics and Her Pacifism as a Playwright Özlem Ezer Abstract: In this article, I discuss Halide Edib’s play Masks or Souls? (MOS) as anti-war literature by a Turkish female intellec- tual and activist who lived between the two World Wars. The ar- ticle provides a more complete portrayal of Edib, who has often been reduced to a nationalist novelist. I also argue that MOS con- tains autobiographical insights. There is evidence in MOS, for ex- ample, that Edib became a pacifist on the eve of the Second World War. Another war Edib fought was against the ideas and ideologies within the military and intellectual circles of Turkey. Through the actions and comments of several characters in the play, Edib also criticizes the reforms and westernization processes that took place immediately after the declaration of the Turkish Republic in 1923. Finally, I counter the neglect this play has suffered by calling into question some of the nation- and region-based hierarchies preva- lent in literary studies. In 1953, Halide Edib,1 a famous Turkish novelist, wrote a play in English called Masks or Souls? (MOS henceforth), based on an earlier, Turkish version of her play.2 The play offers an extensive, cynical cri- tique of ideologies of some contemporaneous governments (those of Turkey and Europe in particular) and the affairs that had been taking place in several countries like the founding of the League of Nations (which she supported) and some extreme right-wing movements (which she did not).

The reflection of Gladys Rockwell’s Wikipedia page floated on his glasses. “She was in movies with Charlie Chaplin,” he said. “Here’s a picture of her with JFK.” Rachel slurped the remains of her Pepsi through a straw. “She’s a hellion.” “In 1949, she booked the Presidential Suite at the Paris Ritz but never checked in,” Julian said. “Later she clarified the suite was for her poodle.” Ariel understood that her assignment was no promotion. Gladys Rockwell’s arrival had transformed the nursing home staff into a hive of paparazzi. She carried with her suitcases of nostalgia and mystique, Oscar snubs, glamor shots, newspaper clippings of a storied life. The centenarian’s antics were enough to see her blacklisted from several area care centers in Buffalo, her hometown, and across upstate New York. Cohen, Ph.D., will be the new Meteorologist in Charge of the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Pueblo, CO starting in August 2020. He will be coming to the NWS Pueblo from his previous position of Science and Operations Officer (SOO) of NWS Miami, FL, where he has served as a leader for science inte- gration into NWS operations. Ariel’s formal NWS operational experience extends back to 2007, when he started as a meteorologist at NWS Great Falls, MT. After working in Great Falls from 2007 to 2008, he worked as a meteorologist at the Tropical Analysis and Forecast Branch of the National Hurricane Center, where he played an important role in their transition to creating forecasts using the Graphical Forecast Editor. In 2009, he became a meteorologist at NWS Jackson, MS, where he earned a Regional Director’s Award. From 2001 to 2017, Dr. Cohen was a fore- caster at the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) in Norman, OK, before moving to Kansas to serve as the SOO of NWS Topeka from 2017 to 2019, prior to becoming the NWS Miami SOO. Dr. Cohen received his Bachelor’s Degree in Atmospheric Sciences from The Ohio State University (2006) and his Master’s Degree and Doctorate in Meteorology from the University of Oklahoma (OU, 2008, 2015).
