Some are physical, some economic, some cultural, some lifestyle, some attitudinal. Two-thirds of my way through this journey, comparisons started to be made and opinions formed. It’s huge and vast resources beg to be developed. The people, especially the younger ones, are intent on achieving lifestyles equal to ours. While business people and the younger generation push to forge ahead, they are often restrained by overbearing regulations, bureaucrats furthering only their own empires, outdated ideas, or the lack of understanding or intuition of government officials. For example, I am told of many smaller airfields closed and abandoned because they couldn’t afford official security, which is the same for a small GA plane as it is for a 747. There are no training flights at the Ekaterinburg airport because federal regulations relegate that activity to certain small, out-of-the-way airports with specific approved schools.     Tom Poberezny and the Maturing of EAA By David Gustafson When Tom Poberezny assumed the leadership of EAA as its second president in 1989, he brought a new set of skills, a fresh perspective and a determination to expand the EAA culture. As a result of what Tom brought to the table, EAA entered a new era. It matured. Tom’s professionalism slowly transformed the activities and the magazines to a broader mission, one that expanded on the concept of sport aviation, winning respect from pilots, the government, other organizations and the general public. Tom worked hard to create an environment in which homebuilding would be preserved. He sort of wrapped the movement into the larger cocoon of sport aviation, concurrently assuring that the essential freedoms for innovation, sharing, building and enjoying the tremendous sense of accomplishment that comes with parking a homebuilt on the flightline would be preserved and flourish. He enlarged the showcase for homebuilts, adding every year to the attractions at Oshkosh. What Paul Poberezny had accomplished in creating the homebuilt movement, Tom took to the next level, imbuing the culture with unimpeachable integrity. He did that by maintaining and fusing Paul’s exacting standards for cleanliness, neatness, family values and safety. He was well trained. Tom had grown up in the EAA/homebuilding environment. With the exception of five years at Northwestern University, Tom’s life, from the cradle up to his retirement last year, was surrounded by aviation, homebuilders, fly-ins and an endless stream of visitors in his home who rarely discussed anything that didn’t have some kind of connection to aviation, usually homebuilding.

These comments were surprising given the fact that the American system handles orders of magnitude more traffic than any other in the world at efficiency and safety levels and costs per operation that are second to none. While AOPA is open to proposals aimed at making the air traffic control system more efficient and delivering technology in a timely and cost-effective manner, we have consistently said we will not support policies that impose user fees on general aviation. Additionally, we are also concerned about the impact of these proposed reforms on general aviation based on what we have seen in other countries. As a 2016 study by Delta Airlines said, “nations that have privatized ATC have seen operational costs increase at a much higher rate than has been seen in the US under the FAA.” We will continue to work with the administration and members of Congress including the General Aviation Caucus to protect the freedom to fly and ensure that safety, access, and costs are protected and addressed.     The Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) was founded on January 26, 1953 in Milwaukee, Wis., as a local club for those who built and restored their own aircraft. It quickly grew to become a vibrant and growing aviation community that includes all who enjoy flying for recreation and welcomes all aviation enthusiasts to participate. Today, EAA is a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation (legal name: Experimental Aircraft Association Inc.) that includes 200,000 members in more than 100 countries. EAA’s mission is dedicated to growing participation in aviation. We inspire members to build, fly, restore, volunteer, and outreach to encourage others to pursue their aviation dreams.
