Tom Poberezny and the Maturing of EAA By David Gustafson When Tom Poberezny assumed the leadership of EAA as its second president in 1989, he brought a new set of skills, a fresh perspective and a determination to expand the EAA culture. As a result of what Tom brought to the table, EAA entered a new era. It matured. Tom’s professionalism slowly transformed the activities and the magazines to a broader mission, one that expanded on the concept of sport aviation, winning respect from pilots, the government, other organizations and the general public. Tom worked hard to create an environment in which homebuilding would be preserved. He sort of wrapped the movement into the larger cocoon of sport aviation, concurrently assuring that the essential freedoms for innovation, sharing, building and enjoying the tremendous sense of accomplishment that comes with parking a homebuilt on the flightline would be preserved and flourish. He enlarged the showcase for homebuilts, adding every year to the attractions at Oshkosh. What Paul Poberezny had accomplished in creating the homebuilt movement, Tom took to the next level, imbuing the culture with unimpeachable integrity. He did that by maintaining and fusing Paul’s exacting standards for cleanliness, neatness, family values and safety. He was well trained. Tom had grown up in the EAA/homebuilding environment. With the exception of five years at Northwestern University, Tom’s life, from the cradle up to his retirement last year, was surrounded by aviation, homebuilders, fly-ins and an endless stream of visitors in his home who rarely discussed anything that didn’t have some kind of connection to aviation, usually homebuilding. -

Volume 28: Issue 2 ● February 2013 A Publication of the Pine Mountain Lake Aviation Association Brigadier General Bob Cardenas to Speak on March 2nd! Where: The McGowan’s Hanger at 6:00 PM March 2nd 2013 rigadier General Robert L. “Bob” Cardenas was born in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico on March 10th, 1920, and moved to San Diego with his parents at the age of five. During his teenage years, Cardenas built model B airplanes and helped local glider pilots with their dope-and-fabric construction, often bumming rides with the pilots in the gliders he helped to repair. A bright student with excellent grades in Mathematics and Physics at high school, Cardenas was selected to attend the San Diego State University. During 1939 Cardenas began a long and distinguished military career when he joined the California National Guard. In September of 1940, Cardenas entered into aviation cadet training, graduated and received his pilot wings & commission as a second lieutenant during July of 1941. Cardenas was sent to Kelly Field, Texas to become a flight instructor, then onto Twentynine Palms, California to establish the U.S. Army Air Force’s glider training school and followed this by becoming a Flight Test Officer and then Director of Flight Test Unit, Experimental Engineering Laboratory, Wright Field Ohio. Cardenas’ next assignment was to the 44th Bomb Group and arrived in England on January 4th, 1944. Based at Shipdam, Norfolk, Cardenas flew his first mission on January 21st in B-24H “Southern Comfort”. On March 18th, 1944 (on his twentieth mission) while flying as command pilot aboard B-24J “Sack Artists” the aircraft in which Cardenas was flying was badly damaged by anti-aircraft fire and enemy fighters. -

Air commanders have clashed continually with ground leaders over the proper use of aircraft in the support of ground operations. This is perhaps not surprising given the very different outlooks of the two services on what constitutes prop- er air support. Often this has turned into a competition between the two serv- ices for resources to execute and control close air support operations. Although such differences extend well back to the initial use of the airplane as a military weapon, in this book the author looks at the period 1946- 1973, a period in which technological advances in the form of jet aircraft, weapons, communications, and other electronic equipment played significant roles. Doctrine, too, evolved and this very important subject is discussed in detail. Close air support remains a critical mission today and the lessons of yesterday should not be ignored. This book makes a notable contribution in seeing that it is not ignored. -

The Way We Were Part 1 By: Donna Ryan The Early Years – 1954- 1974 Early Years Overview - The idea for the Chapter actually got started in June of 1954, when a group of Convair engineers got together over coffee at the old La Mesa airport. The four were Bjorn Andreasson, Frank Hernandez, Ladislao Pazmany, and Ralph Wilcox. - The group applied for a Chapter Charter which was granted two years later, on October 5, 1956. - Frank Hernandez was Chapter President for the first seven years of the Chapter, ably assisted by Ralph Wilcox as the Vice President. Frank later served as VP as well. The first four first flights of Chapter members occurred in 1955 and 1957. They were: Lloyd Paynter – Corbin; Sam Ursham - Air Chair; Frank Hernandez - Rapier 65; and Waldo Waterman - Aerobile. - A folder in our archives described the October 15-16, 1965 Ramona Fly-in which was sponsored by our chapter. Features: -Flying events: Homebuilts, antiques, replicas, balloon burst competition and spot landing competitions. - John Thorp was the featured speaker. - Aerobatic display provided by John Tucker in a Starduster. - Awards given: Static Display; Safety; Best Workmanship; Balloon Burst; Aircraft Efficiency; Spot Landings. According to an article published in 1997, in 1969 we hosted a fly-In in Ramona that drew 16,000 people. Some Additional Dates, Numbers, Activities June 1954: 7 members. First meeting was held at the old La Mesa Airport. 1958: 34 members. First Fly-in was held at Gillespie Field. 1964: 43 members. Had our first Chapter project: ten PL-2’s were begun by ten Chapter 14 members. -

The Fighting Five-Tenth: One Fighter-Bomber Squadron’s Experience during the Development of World War II Tactical Air Power by Adrianne Lee Hodgin Bruce A dissertation submitted to the Graduate Faculty of Auburn University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Auburn, Alabama December 14, 2013 Keywords: World War II, fighter squadrons, tactical air power, P-47 Thunderbolt, European Theater of Operations Copyright 2013 by Adrianne Lee Hodgin Bruce Approved by William Trimble, Chair, Alumni Professor of History Alan Meyer, Assistant Professor of History Mark Sheftall, Associate Professor of History Abstract During the years between World War I and World War II, many within the Army Air Corps (AAC) aggressively sought an independent air arm and believed that strategic bombardment represented an opportunity to inflict severe and dramatic damages on the enemy while operating autonomously. In contrast, working in cooperation with ground forces, as tactical forces later did, was viewed as a subordinate role to the army‘s infantry and therefore upheld notions that the AAC was little more than an alternate means of delivering artillery. When President Franklin Delano Roosevelt called for a significantly expanded air arsenal and war plan in 1939, AAC strategists saw an opportunity to make an impression. Eager to exert their sovereignty, and sold on the efficacy of heavy bombers, AAC leaders answered the president‘s call with a strategic air doctrine and war plans built around the use of heavy bombers. The AAC, renamed the Army Air Forces (AAF) in 1941, eventually put the tactical squadrons into play in Europe, and thus tactical leaders spent 1943 and the beginning of 1944 preparing tactical air units for three missions: achieving and maintaining air superiority, isolating the battlefield, and providing air support for ground forces.
