Storia Illustrata Di Piombino' (‘Illustrated History of Piombino’- Translator’S Note) Event: 15 April, from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., in online mode Presentation of the book 'Storia illustrata di Piombino' (‘Illustrated History of Piombino’- Translator’s note) On 15th April, from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., as part of the Port Center Thursdays initiative, a book on the history of Piombino, published by Pacini Editore and financed by the Banca di Credito Cooperativo di Castagneto Carducci, will be presented online. The book, written by Marco Paperini, is an historical account of Piombino between the thirteenth and nineteenth centuries in a richly evocative journey that offers incredible, evocative settings (like Piombino's lagoons) and historical glimpses of rare beauty dedicated to the birth of the town around the port of Falesia and its development up to the dawn of the contemporary age. There are many characters in this story, from Appiani to Leonardo da Vinci, from the beautiful Simonetta Cattaneo to Princess Elisa Bonaparte. All of this is enriched by previously unpublished images, revealing a Piombino unknown to most people. The book will be presented by the President of the Northern Tyrrhenian Port Network Authority, Luciano Guerrieri. The event will be attended by t Piombino’s Councillor for Culture and Tourism, Giuliano Parodi, the General Manager of the Banca di Credito Cooperativo di Castagneto Carducci, Fabrizio Mannari, and the President of the Fondazione Livorno Arte e Cultura, Olimpia Vaccari. The author of the book, Marco Paperini, will be taking the floor. Moderator: Claudio Capuano, manager of the Port of Piombino Territorial Office. The publisher will also be present. ‘Port Center Thursdays’ is a programme of more or less monthly appointments, from October to June, organized by the Northern Tyrrhenian Port Network Authority as part of the Open Port initiative, a project designed to open up the Network’s ports to citizens and tourists, which, over the last year, has had to be adapted into an online version, maintaining a high level of interest in discovering the places and port activities of the past and present. For the first time ever, the Port Center Thursday initiave will be held in Piombino, in the Port Network’s Territorial Office’s conference room. Piombino is is one of the six ports in the North Tyrrhenian Network, which also comprises Livorno, the Elba island ports of Portoferraio, Rio Marina, Cavo and Capraia island port). The presentation of Marco Paperini’s book marks the perfect starting point for a programme to be developed in the Piombino and Elba area. a.p. 1 / 2 If you’re interested in taking part, click on the following link: https://portialtotirreno.webex.com/portialtotirreno- it/j.php?MTID=m13a5fcdaf0b8a6d3c9e89dffd7bbabc2 a.p. 2 / 2 .

Press Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - 22 February 2017 The 2017 ERL Emergency Grand Challenge will be hosted in Piombino, Tuscany (Italy) on 15-23 September Following the success of euRathlon 2015, the European Robotics League has entrusted the NATO Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE), based in La Spezia (Italy), with the organization of the 2017 event devoted to the field of robots as a first response in emergency situations. Dates and venue of the competition were announced on 22 February during a press conference held by CMRE and Municipality Less than 100 minutes, a race against the clock to survey the scene of a simulated disaster, collect environmental data, and identify critical hazards, find and help missing workers. This is a challenge that only ground, marine and aerial robots can tackle effectively by working together. And this is the challenge proposed by the international robotics competition which returns again this summer to Piombino (Italy) as part of the major tournament of the European Robotics League – Emergency Robots challenge. The ERL Emergency 2017 event will be locally organised on 15-23 September, near the Enel-owned thermal power plant at Torre del Sale, by the NATO Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE), based in La Spezia (Italy), which masterminded the euRathlon project’s final competition in 2015 in the same venue. “We are glad to come back to Piombino in a location that has already proven to be perfectly suitable to host this kind of competition, inspired by the 2011 Fukushima accident”, says Gabriele Ferri, Technical Director. “Once again the town will be the international capital of robotics for a few days.

  • Ambito 23 Val Di Cornia
QUADRO CONOSCITIVO Ambito n°23 VAL DI CORNIA PROVINCE : Livorno TERRITORI APPARTENENTI AI COMUNI : Campiglia Marittima, Follonica, Piombino, San Vincenzo, Sassetta, Suvereto CENNI DI OROGRAFIA E DI IDROGRAFIA Quest’area coincide parzialmente col bacino del fiume Cornia.

  • A Virtual Train Journey Along the Mare Ligure from Ventimiglia to Rome
Italian Culture Newsletter Number 22 A Virtual Train Journey along the Mare Ligure from Ventimiglia to Rome. Marie and I have made this journey on a number of occasions. In doing so we have either made the journey in a single day albeit with a change of train, usually at Genova. On other occasions, we have spent an evening or even a few days at Genova and/or at Livorno or Pisa. The journey described will involve more stops on the way but could be more interesting on that account. The trip begins in Ventimiglia where we stayed overnight on our last day of our last holiday in Italy. This had been occasioned by the French railway strike which prevented any trains from running from Ventimiglia to Nice on the day of our arrival from Rome into the city at the Italian- French border in Liguria. Our first visit to Ventimiglia was in 2006 when some Italian friends from Cuneo, due north of Ventimiglia, in Piemonte, met us at the rail station in Ventimiglia to take us for a short stay at their apartment in Nice. On that occasion we didn’t see much of the city except for part of the old medieval town, which now mostly is the home of many of the southerners from Naples, Calabria and Sicily who moved north seeking employment after WWII. The old town is perched high above the new city with its long sea-front promenade and railway station. Ventimiglia is the ancient Albium Intemelium, the capital of the Intemelii, a Ligurian tribe which long resisted the Romans, until in 115 BC it was forced to submit to Marcus Aemilius Scaurus.
