We are happy to announce the introduction of our new after-school class at Shoreditch Park Primary School! Initially for children in Reception, the class will be a one hour street dance/ballet ‘combo’ class (30 minutes of street dance and 30 minutes of ballet) on Thursdays from 3:30 – 4:30, and will be taught by Lynn (please see Lynn’s photo/bio below). Each term the children will learn one or more routines and will have the opportunity to perform in public alongside other students from the school; we are very excited about this new class and hope that your child/ren will join us! TEACHER BIO Lynn (ballet, street, drama, singing) started dancing at the age of 10, competing in disco competitions before moving onto commercial dancing for pop events and concerts and eventually becoming one of the professional squad dancers for Glasgow Rangers football team. She gained her teaching qualifications at the age of 21 and has been teaching ever since. After getting to the boot camp stages of the X Factor, Lynn performed on stage at the 02 arena as an open mic UK finalist and was asked to move to London from Scotland to join an artist development programme. She now teaches children at nurseries, schools and after school clubs and enjoys watching children gain confidence through the medium of dance: "To see a child exceed their own expectations and to watch my groups form bonds, truly is the most rewarding part of my job". .

The latest to go at the end of February was the Pig and Drum in Worcester which has been prominent on the local music seen for a few years now. Thanks to the efforts of landlady Rachel Cale bands from out of town loved playing there. We don’t yet know the long term fate of the Boar’s Mar 2017 Head in Kidderminster since Sid & Sandra announced they’re moving on in the summer, But I don’t think it’ll be the last to go. With business rates rises due very soon and so many people feeling the pinch, these places are really suffering. Investigating the health of the UK folk club Dr Stephen Henderson Senior Lecturer Leeds Metropolitan University UK Centre for Events Management Room 216 Bronte Hall Headingley Campus Leeds LS6 3QS United Kingdom Telephone: 0113 812 5514 Email: [email protected] Abstract This research addresses the conflicting views of the health of folk music by way of interviewing artists, agents, and folk club organisers/promoters. Exploring the more homogenous formats of performance observed as singarounds (including sessions), ‘open mic’ and concert clubs, it is concluded that the concert club is struggling to survive whilst the other formats are still offering opportunities to folk artists. However, the latter are finding both the formal venues such as arts centres and the emergence of young promoters provides compensatory opportunities for performance. 1. Aim of Research For many years, folk clubs have provided places of congregation for those of like musical mind to discuss, perform, enjoy and share their music. This paper explores the state of health found within the UK folk club scene where the phrase ‘folk revival’ seems to be mentioned as often as concerns are raised about the future of the folk club. In considering the state of the folk club, this work concentrates on the business models represented by different folk club formats and their relative health as opposed to the complex ethnomusicology behind the folk music format. 2. Methodology In order to address the health of the folk club, the author has interviewed twelve individuals including the artists who play these clubs, agents who book out the artists across the many venues and organisers/promoters who book the artists into these venues.

Student Sample 1 Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel were a duo from Queens, who performed folk rock from 1957 – 1070. They met in 4th grade when Simon saw Garfunkel at a talent show and hoped to befriend him as a ploy to attract girls. They eventually wrote their first song, “Girl for Me” in 1956 while at Forest Hill High School. The years went by and as their time for departure grew closer, their disagreements grew stronger, leading to the demise of the duo after the album, “Sounds of Silence”, was a commercial failure. Over the years they have reunited on occasions to play together, just as they did in the old days. Disturbed, originally titled, “Brawl”, Is a heavy metal band from Chicago, consisting of vocalist, David Draiman, Bassist, John Moyer, Guitarist, Dan Donegan, And drummer, Mike Wengren. Draiman was the second vocalist after, Erich Analf and was the ultimate decider of their new name. When asked about the name, Draiman replied, “It just seemed to symbolise everything we were feeling at the time”. Since Draiman’s joining, the band had released 5 albums before retiring to their side projects in 2011. The band re-joined in 2015 to release “Immortalised” which has sold over 400,000 copies in the U.S. The Sound of Silence was written by Paul Simon and recorded by Simon and Garfunkel in Columbia studios in 1964. Album was a commercial failure but after their producer heard it over the radio time and time again, he decided to remix the track, adding drums, bass, and electric guitar.

He has written over 40 versions of various subjects his favourite being…Cinderella. Peter enjoys the challenge of writing for the intimate space at the Forum as it allows greater audience participation. Peter received the OBE in 2009 for services to local theatre and public service. STEVE DAVIES – PRODUCER & DIRECTOR Steve has worked with Tip Top since the company was formed in 1989! In that time he has acted, produced, directed, stage crewed and for five years was theatre manager at The Forum Studio Theatre. He is currently Artistic Director. On stage Steve’s credits are many and varied; including no less than fifteen pantomimes, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, The Rise and Fall of Little Voice, Emcee in Cabaret, Oliver!, Art, Brassed Off and Hold Tight It’s Sixties Night. Issue 61 Aug 2016 FREE SLAP S LA P Well July was fun, from what I can remember anyway! We certainly got around... There was the Upton Blues Festival followed closely by Nozstock followed very closely by a certain magazine deadline. We cover these two very contrasting experiences and much more in this issue, such as Barn on the Farm Festival and of course just a fraction of the many music and arts events happening around these parts. This brings us to the small matter of August! As the theatre’s slow down for the summer holidays we have plenty of local music festivals to look forward to, such as: Jinney Ring Blues; Down on Aug2016 the Farm at Abbeydore, Hereford; Summerfest in Cheltenham; The Morton Stanley in Redditch; The Drunken Monkey near Upton & The Old Bush Blues at Callow End to name but a few. Then of course there’s one or two bigger festivals such Lakefest at the SLAP MAGAZINE new site at Eastnor and Sportbeat in Gloucester.
