TERM DATES w/c 15th September- w/c 1st December Welcome back to all our students. We hope you all had a wonderful summer break and are feeling ready and refreshed for another exciting term at The Theatre Workshop! EXTRA DANCE CLASSES We are pleased to announce that we are now offering EXTRA DANCE at all of our schools! Extra Dance is a fortnightly class that takes place before or after the main session (depending on the school) at a cost of £40 per term. Students have the chance to further improve on their dance technique and from this term the class will prepare students to compete as a class in dance festivals in Sussex! STUDENT SUCCESS Yet again, our students have been securing fabulous roles on stage and screen! -Abigail Eames and Eloise Barnes have recently filmed for hit BBC TV show 'Doctor Who'. - Max Newitt and Harvey Pearce have secured roles in musical 'Gypsy' at Chichester Festival Theatre with Imelda Staunton. -Kitty Peterkin will film the role of Young Polly in new CBBC show 'Hetty Feather'. -Fresh from filming her second series of 'Hank Zipzer' for CBBC and a role in 'Holby City', Madeline Holliday has landed a lead role in the BBC's comedy adaptation of the Professor Branestawm books. -Baz Patterson secured a Sky commercial after his very first casting! - Eliot Milward and Logan Brewer both secured a role in the UK Tour of 'Annie Get Your Gun' at The Theatre Royal, Brighton - Ex-student Richard Hadfield took the country by storm when he won Britain's Got Talent with his band Collabro. Since then, their debut album has gone gold and they are embarking on a UK tour! - A number of students from across our schools have been selected to perform in professional operas 'Madama Butterfly' and 'Rigoletto' for Ellen Kent at theatres in Brighton, Southsea and Eastbourne. CHOIR INFORMATION This term, choir rehearsals will be taking place at Roedean School on Sundays at a new time of 10am-12:30pm. This terms choir rehearsal dates are: Sunday 28th September Sunday 19th October Sunday 23rd November This term, the choir will have the opportunity to perform at the Child of Sussex Awards at Brighton's Grand Hotel on 31st October. BROADWAY EXPERIENCE 27th-29th October 2014 We are delighted to be able to offer a UK exclusive! The Broadway Experience is an exciting three day Musical Theatre Workshop in October half term, usually exclusive to those in New York! Open to group 2's and above, if you are a budding triple threat, this workshop is for you. The Broadway Experience is a New York based musical theatre program designed to create and inspire triple threat performers. Students undergo an intense, disciplined study of dance, voice, and acting with current Broadway professionals and incredible master teachers. Students become stronger, versatile, and more dynamic performers, preparing themselves for a professional career at the highest level. The cost is £199 and the course will run for three days over the October half term break at Roedean School between the hours of 10am-5pm. SPECIAL OFFER The first ten people to sign up will receive £20 off the cost of the course. We are working with new Director of Drama at Roedean Jay Green, founder of the Petersfield Shakespeare Festival, to provide new and exciting opportunities for our students. We are delighted to have the use of such wonderful facilities and look forward to developing this relationship further. OPEN MIC UK/ TEENSTAR We are now the official Brighton partner of Open Mic UK- the UK's largest search for unsigned singing talent, responsible for discovering artists like Birdy and Luke Friend. The Theatre Workshop's Creative Director Lora Munro has therefore been invited to sit on the panel of this year's competition with the hope of finding a new star in Sussex. Congratulations to all of our talented students who have auditioned so far in the competition. Don't worry if you missed out, there is still time to apply for their sister competition TeenStar which we will also be supporting. For more information, visit www.teenstarcompetition.co.uk HUNGRY WOLF EDINBURGH SUCCESS Our Youth Theatre Company Hungry Wolf achieved great success at this year's Edinburgh Fringe Festival with more fabulous reviews for their productions of 'The Electra Project' and 'Joe's Cautionary Tales'. The company received nothing but 5* and 4* reviews for their runs at both the Brighton and Edinburgh Fringe Festivals- a fabulous achievement! They even got a tweet from Sir Ken Robinson! 'Just laughed till I peed myself! The Electra Project by Hungry Wolf at the Space is now officially one of my favourite things ever! Genius!' BAFTA member Rikki Beadle Blair Watch this space for information about 2015's Hungry Wolf Project! Auditions will take place over the Christmas break and the piece will be rehearsed in February half term. More information to follow! JOHN CLARK HEADSHOT SHOOT Due to new rules implemented by the agency, all students on the agency are taking part in a compulsory headshot shoot with London's leading headshot photographer John Clark on Saturday 4th October at Brighton & Hove High School. The shoot is heavily subsidised due to the large group booking, and will cost £50. This is a fabulous opportunity to get some great new headshots and this offer is also open to students not on the agency who would like some new pictures taken. To arrange a time slot, please contact [email protected] NEW CHICHESTER SATURDAY SCHOOL! We are thrilled to announce the opening of our new Chichester SATURDAY School. The school now runs from Central CofE Primary School at 10am-1pm on Saturday mornings. We hope that this move will make the school more accessible to people in the Chichester area. It really feels like it’s been a long winter of discontent with news of more venue closures almost weekly. The latest to go at the end of February was the Pig and Drum in Worcester which has been prominent on the local music seen for a few years now. Thanks to the efforts of landlady Rachel Cale bands from out of town loved playing there. We don’t yet know the long term fate of the Boar’s Mar 2017 Head in Kidderminster since Sid & Sandra announced they’re moving on in the summer, But I don’t think it’ll be the last to go. With business rates rises due very soon and so many people feeling the pinch, these places are really suffering.     Investigating the health of the UK folk club Dr Stephen Henderson Senior Lecturer Leeds Metropolitan University UK Centre for Events Management Room 216 Bronte Hall Headingley Campus Leeds LS6 3QS United Kingdom Telephone: 0113 812 5514 Email: [email protected] Abstract This research addresses the conflicting views of the health of folk music by way of interviewing artists, agents, and folk club organisers/promoters. Exploring the more homogenous formats of performance observed as singarounds (including sessions), ‘open mic’ and concert clubs, it is concluded that the concert club is struggling to survive whilst the other formats are still offering opportunities to folk artists. However, the latter are finding both the formal venues such as arts centres and the emergence of young promoters provides compensatory opportunities for performance. 1. Aim of Research For many years, folk clubs have provided places of congregation for those of like musical mind to discuss, perform, enjoy and share their music. This paper explores the state of health found within the UK folk club scene where the phrase ‘folk revival’ seems to be mentioned as often as concerns are raised about the future of the folk club. In considering the state of the folk club, this work concentrates on the business models represented by different folk club formats and their relative health as opposed to the complex ethnomusicology behind the folk music format. 2. Methodology In order to address the health of the folk club, the author has interviewed twelve individuals including the artists who play these clubs, agents who book out the artists across the many venues and organisers/promoters who book the artists into these venues.

    Student Sample 1 Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel were a duo from Queens, who performed folk rock from 1957 – 1070. They met in 4th grade when Simon saw Garfunkel at a talent show and hoped to befriend him as a ploy to attract girls. They eventually wrote their first song, “Girl for Me” in 1956 while at Forest Hill High School. The years went by and as their time for departure grew closer, their disagreements grew stronger, leading to the demise of the duo after the album, “Sounds of Silence”, was a commercial failure. Over the years they have reunited on occasions to play together, just as they did in the old days. Disturbed, originally titled, “Brawl”, Is a heavy metal band from Chicago, consisting of vocalist, David Draiman, Bassist, John Moyer, Guitarist, Dan Donegan, And drummer, Mike Wengren. Draiman was the second vocalist after, Erich Analf and was the ultimate decider of their new name. When asked about the name, Draiman replied, “It just seemed to symbolise everything we were feeling at the time”. Since Draiman’s joining, the band had released 5 albums before retiring to their side projects in 2011. The band re-joined in 2015 to release “Immortalised” which has sold over 400,000 copies in the U.S. The Sound of Silence was written by Paul Simon and recorded by Simon and Garfunkel in Columbia studios in 1964. Album was a commercial failure but after their producer heard it over the radio time and time again, he decided to remix the track, adding drums, bass, and electric guitar.

He has written over 40 versions of various subjects his favourite being…Cinderella. Peter enjoys the challenge of writing for the intimate space at the Forum as it allows greater audience participation. Peter received the OBE in 2009 for services to local theatre and public service. STEVE DAVIES – PRODUCER & DIRECTOR Steve has worked with Tip Top since the company was formed in 1989! In that time he has acted, produced, directed, stage crewed and for five years was theatre manager at The Forum Studio Theatre. He is currently Artistic Director. On stage Steve’s credits are many and varied; including no less than fifteen pantomimes, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, The Rise and Fall of Little Voice, Emcee in Cabaret, Oliver!, Art, Brassed Off and Hold Tight It’s Sixties Night. There was the Upton Blues Festival followed closely by Nozstock followed very closely by a certain magazine deadline. We cover these two very contrasting experiences and much more in this issue, such as Barn on the Farm Festival and of course just a fraction of the many music and arts events happening around these parts. This brings us to the small matter of August! As the theatre’s slow down for the summer holidays we have plenty of local music festivals to look forward to, such as: Jinney Ring Blues; Down on Aug2016 the Farm at Abbeydore, Hereford; Summerfest in Cheltenham; The Morton Stanley in Redditch; The Drunken Monkey near Upton & The Old Bush Blues at Callow End to name but a few.
