Pre-Visit Activity Time Required: Student Outcomes: 20-30 minutes Students will be able to... • List different types of national parks in Washington. Materials: • Name two parks in Washington. Washington State Map* • Name a river and a mountain in Olympic National Park. Olympic National Park Brochure Map * Background: *provided The National Park System in the United States preserves many amazing places, valued for their intact ecosystems, biodiversity, beautiful landscapes, history and Subjects: recreation potential. Trade maps halfway through the activity so that all students look at both maps. Washington State 2. Olympic National Park Reader’s Digest video* Background: worksheet* Olympic National Park, established in 1938, protects and preserves a vast wil- pencils derness where many organisms survive as they have for thousands of years. In *provided 1976 the park was designated a Biosphere Reserve and recognized internation- ally by UNESCO for its unmatched scientific significance and scenic beauty. Make copies of the Olympic Video worksheet for your class. 2. Have the students watch the video and complete the worksheet. (Answers are provided for the teachers.) 3. Discuss answers with class after viewing the video. Option: 1. It provides a foundation for further planning to ensure that County leadership, agencies, and citizens are aware and prepared to meet the effects of disasters and emergencies. Incident management cannot be event driven. Through increased awareness and preventive measures, the ultimate goal is to help ensure a unified approach that will lesson vulnerability to hazards over time. The HIVA is not a detailed study, but a general overview of known hazards that can affect Jefferson County. From Hurricane Ridge, it is a 30-minute drive (12 miles) to Heart O’ Hills campground in Olympic National Park, where we will be camping for the night. Day 2, Salt Creek: From Heart O’ the Hills it is a 1-hour drive (45 miles) to the Sol Duc Valley in Olympic National Park. Along this route we will make several stops for viewing waterfalls and Lake Crescent. From the Sol Duc it is a 1-hour drive (45 miles) to Salt Creek, which is along the waterfront cliffs of the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

The Olympic National Park is very diverse. It includes three different ecosystems: mountains, pacific coast, and temperate rain forest. 3 Hoh Rainforest The Hoh Rainforest is a part of the Olympic National Park. It is a temperate rainforest. The canopy is lush and green due to all of the rain the area gets. The Hoh Rainforest is covered in a layer of mosses and ferns as well. 4 Pacific Coast Beautiful sunsets can be seen on the coastlines of the Pacific Ocean when visiting the Olympic National Park. Grey whales can be seen spouting in the water. Seals, sea lions, and sea otters are also often swimming in the Pacific Ocean or resting on the beaches. 5 Olympic Mountains Mount Olympus is the highest peak in the Olympic Mountain Range, reaching 7,980 feet at the summit. Hurricane Ridge is a great lookout point to view the Olympic Mountains. 6 Weather Temperate rainforests have mild weather, so it is never extremely cold or extremely hot How much does it rain in temperate rainforests? In the Hoh Rainforest, the average rainfall per year is 140 to 170 inches, which is 12 to 14 feet! 7 Diversity How is there so much diversity in the Olympic National Park? Since there are high mountain peaks and low-lying rivers, there are many changes in elevation.

DeLuca Bryophytes have been used extensively in Europe to assess the impacts of air pollution and atmospheric deposition; however there have been no studies conducted in Washington State to examine how pollution associated with urbanization is impacting canopy and forest floor bryophyte communities. This study investigated in N2 fixation rates and metal concentrations in bryophytes across Acer macrophyllum Pursh stands in western Washington. We used an intensive, vertically stratified sampling approach in Acer macrophyllum canopies in the Hoh Rainforest on the Olympic Peninsula, WA and in Seattle, WA to collect 214 samples of Isothecium stoloniferum (Brid.). An extensive, ground-based sampling approach was used across an urban-to-wildland gradient to collect 59 Kindbergia praelonga (Hedw.) Ochyra samples. Intensive samples were collected four times (April, July, and October of 2016; and in January 2017) and extensive samples three times (April, July, and October 2016) to assess seasonal differences in N2 fixation rates and metal concentrations across sampling locations. Nitrogen fixation rates in canopy I. stoloniferum samples was found to be dependent on sampling season and location.

Whether you plan to flash in for just the scheduled activities, or you plan to add days to your exploration of this unique part of the country, some forethought, planning and pre-trip actions will help you achieve that best experience. First, a bit about our September weather. You can expect daytime temperatures to typically be in the 60's and night temperatures in the 50's. Obviously, our extremes can easily get up to the 70's in the day and down to the 40's at night. For any side trips that include ferries or boat rides, expect the wind to require wind breakers and an extra layer of warmth. This may also apply to the tours planned since many of them include extended stops along the salt water coasts. Additionally, you may chose an independent tour with an altitude above 5,000 feet where you can find some unpredictably cool temperatures. Finally, our rainfall here is concentrated in the winter months but still is typically quite light in September outside the rainforest areas on the far west coast. Heavy raingear is quite unlikely to be worth packing - just a rain jacket and hat will be more than adequate. Next, some information and guidance on park passes and fees.
