Stanley Cup Comes to The Cape! It’s here, then its there. The Cup made am impromptu appearance at the Hyannis Youth and Community Center during the Jr. Hurricanes U18 Practice this past September. And at a restaurant in Bourne. Another sighting at a private home in Sandwich that has ties to the Bruins owner group.

The Boston Bruins won the Cup back in June keeping hockey excitement is alive and well in the “Hub Of Hockey”. Cape Cod is certainly part of the Hub. New England Hockey Heritage on the Cape merges at all levels.

The Cape Hockey News concept started over 14 months ago. I was thinking of bringing the first pro team to Cape Cod since Vince McMahon ran a team at the old Coliseum in 1982. While contemplating pro hockey for Cape Cod the newspaper idea made sense as a media component.

Eventually we helped wash ashore the Binghamton Barons of the Federal Hockey League last December. The team had folded in upstate New York. Ste- ve Estey and I had been talking with the FHL for about a year. We recognized that our new facility in Hyannis could be a home for a pro team. As hockey en- thusiasts we worked for about 14 months to make it happen.

The left over Binghamton players drove down the Mass Pike heading for a new opportunity. Before they came over the bridge Steve and I had already laid the foundation. We set up housing for the players. And when the players arrived we took the responsibility as coaches and community supporters. We found out rel- atively quickly that the old team came with a Pandora’s box. Let’s just say that the world of professional hockey is rough and tum- ble on the ice and off the ice. After about 1 month, a 2nd owner group took over the team. During the 3 month stretch last winter, the Barons finished 0-14 as a Cape Cod FHL team.

A third owner group now is working hard to move the Cape FHL team forward. Their showcase is slated for a 26 game home stand in Hyannis. As a local community supporter and fan of hockey, the pro hockey equation all sounds great. As a local business per- son, I like all of this, provided that all the various important components can come together such as; funding, insurance, league sta- bility, and hiring the right mix of players that can live well within our community. It’s not going to be easy, but I think they can pull it off with the help from the powers that be at the HYCC. It’s going to take all hands on deck and plenty of financing to get them thru a couple of seasons. If they jump the hurdle of year 1 and 2, year 3 and forward should be profitable. The FHL pro play- ers range from 21 years of age to 30.

Switching thoughts towards junior hockey. Most programs on Cape and off Cape run in a unique way. The players actually pay tu- ition for the training. The Cubs played at the HYCC when the rink first opened two years ago and the crowds were very large. I think Cape Codders first thought that this team was a pro team. Most likely because the team had all of those flying Russians on it. Junior in New England actually works sort of like prep school. Here on Cape there is no better mentorship than Coach Hodge. “Hodgie” played many seasons as a professional hockey player and knows the game inside and out. The junior players are 16 to 20 years of age.

Taking notice of the entire hockey market here on the Cape I reflect on the men’s leaguers. I have sponsored men’s teams in Hy- annis and Tony Kent. It’s been fun interacting with the various teams. In the spring time, there are several fantastic men’s tour- ney’s on the Cape. Whitey, hailing from the Tony Kent Arena, has an over 35. Brad runs the Spring Fling. And Steve runs the Ann Estey Memorial. These 3 tournaments bring folks down to the Cape from all over New England. The Hockey News plans to sponsor a men’s team in the Black Dog League at Gallo this winter. Most Men’s leaguers range from 18 years of age all the way to guys that can still hang in their 50’s. And don't’ forget the super old timers that can play at 60 to 70 years of age.

I would not want to miss the fast paced level high school games on Cape. Cape Cod has high school hockey at all 3 divisions in the MIAA.

Deeper levels on conscious thinking has me in wonderment watching my friends kids play at various youth hockey levels. Main- taining this meditation I always seem to be amazed at how much Hockey is ingrained within our community. Especially so in that the Bruins are coming off a Stanley Cup Victory.

Sincerely,

Michael J. Mullaney Publisher Cape Cod Hockey News 508-208-2265 [email protected]

Steve Estey is the Director of Business Operations. Dave Di Lorenzo is the marketing manager and community relations manager.

These players are part of the International Hockey League. The Islanders comprise of 16 to 20 year olds hailing from; USA, Canada, Venezuela, Russia, Germany, & Belarus.

This year started out with a two game home stand against the Albany Americans. The teams in the league are gener- ally from New England. Coach Hodge has made great strides over the past two years by including Cape Cod home grown talent. Current Cape Cod players are; Adam Scudder form Falmouth. Joe Madden from Orleans. Matt Sherbertes from Hyannis. Conner Fries from Centerville. Sean Lowe from Falmouth. Greg Lynch from Harwich.

The Islanders play in the Super Elite division of the IJHL. They play; Albany Americans, New England Stars, Boston Jr. Black Hawks, Eastern Kodiaks, Mariners, & National Sports Academy.

There also 3 players returning from Canada. Ben Church- ill from Nova Scotia, Justin Demone also from NS, and James Watkins from British Columbia. This year’s team show’s tons of promise. Even though they took the cham- pionship over the past 2 years in the IJHL this team is brand new, and the players are getting to know each other. Hockey is the type of sport that team work is imperative. The players have to get to know their line mates and there is a timing process and learning curve. Coach Hodge says, “that I’m impressed with the effort of this group from day 1 at training camp.”

Cape Cod Waves Girls Hockey Makes A Splash…

The Cape Cod Waves hockey program has; U10, U12, U14 Blue, U14 White, U19 Blue, & U19 White teams as part of their program. The Waves are best known for their annual “Cranberry Classic” tourna- ment. Last year the tourney hosted 91 teams. This year’s event will take place from November 25th thru Sunday November 27th.

Barnstable Youth Hockey Has The Big Numbers…

Barnstable Youth Hockey has the largest program on Cape Cod. With over 500 members playing in the program. BYH fields teams at the; A, B, & C levels from Mites thru Bantam age levels. Two years ago the town of Barnstable funded a brand new double rink facility that is currently called the Hyannis Youth and Community Center. The center is home to BYH.

Cape Cod Youth Hockey League…

This league represents several towns on Cape Cod home to hockey history. Here is the breakdown. There are 6 teams in this league. The Coyotes play at the Charles Moore arena in Orleans. Yarmouth/ Dennis plays out of Tony Kent.

Gateway plays at Gallo in Bourne and Tabor Academy. Martha’s Vineyard, well everyone has to take the ferry to play them. Hetland is off Cape, as is Swansea. This league would represent the quintessential youth travel league as the kids get to play against kids from other towns.

Falmouth Youth Hockey A New Rink...

The Clippers have been working for years to break ground on a new facility. We talked with Paul Moore, the president of Falmouth Youth Hockey, “we have been working hard to break ground on the new rink”. Falmouth is unique is that the town is sort of a town within itself on the Cape. Falmouth is considered on the Upper part of the Cape and is accessed on Route 28 south when you come over the Bourne Bridge.

Eastern Hockey Federation...

The Hurricanes are a AA select youth organization run by Paul She- bertes & John Danby. John Played for Boston University and the New England Whalers of the WHA. This Cape Cod team is a mem- ber of the Eastern Hockey Federation. “Most people view youth hockey as mites thru bantams, in AA hockey and AAA they play by birth year.”, explains Paul. “Meaning they names the teams such as 01’ which are 9 year olds, basically squirt. 04’ = mites, 03= mites, 04 = mite minor, 02 = squirt minor, 01 = squirt major and so on and so forth.

The Eastern Hockey Federation is made up of the; The Bay State Breakers, Boston Bandits, Boston Jr. Terriers, The Middlesex Is- landers, Providence Capitals, South Shore Kings, NE Junior Fal- cons, Minuteman Flames, Boston Jr. Eagles, and Top Gun from New Hampshire. Trade, sell, or buy hockey at Play it Again Sports in Hyannis!

Paul is a part owner of the Play It Again Sports shop located in Hy- annis. “We also have Top Shelf Hockey School on Cape Cod, and have run this since 2002, we have Keith Allain who is the US men’s junior hockey coach and he is also the head coach of the Yale University, we are fortunate to have him working with Top Shelf, mentioned Paul. Matt Clark, formerly from Barnstable High and Clemson is the stretching coach for the Hurricanes. He teaches dynamic stretching methods for Top Shelf. www.topshelfhockeyschool.com

John Gallo Rink On The Canal… John Hickey has been running the Gallo rink for the past 11 years. In his words “Gallo is a friendly competitive rink, and we are happy to have the new Black Dog Men’s League here”. John also mentioned that the Bourne Youth Hockey Association and the Canal Youth Hockey plays at Gallo.

Sandwich High uses this rink as their home ice and has won many Div 2 State Championships dating back to the 70’s. The Gallo rink is located literally on the Cape Cod Canal between Bourne and Sandwich, or between the Sagamore Bridge and the Bourne bridge on the Cape Cod side.

Dave was part of the Stanley Cup team back in 2006.

Dave also played in the Pittsburgh Penguins organization. The Cape Hockey News met Dave over at the Hyannis Youth & Com- munity Center earlier in September at the biz to biz card swap skate designed to introduce the Cape Cod Islander Junior team to local business folk that also play hockey. The Hockey news interviewed and Dave responded….

Question.. “What was it like being a part of a Stanley Cup team?

“Getting called up to the NHL was a life long dream of mine. During the 2006 season i played my first NHL game in Montreal and when the playoffs started I was recalled to Carolina again. Being part of that championship team taught me so much about what it took to be a pro and how to be a champion. The lessons i learned back then i still carry with me today and use them to help me in my real estate career. I was honored to be apart of the Carolina Hurricanes and to have a Stanley Cup Ring is a dream that i never imagined. “ Question.. “What are some of you memories growing up on Cape Cod and playing hockey here?

“I moved to Cape Cod when i was 5 years old and shortly there after my hockey career began. I can honestly say once i started playing i never stopped. Before I knew it I was playing year round for three different teams and traveling around North Ameri- ca. Kennedy Rink (still the best ice I ever skated on) was my home and I wanted to be there everyday. Now with the Bruins be- ing so popular again I think you will see hockey in Mass become big again and I hope to see more Cape Cod kids like me have their dreams come true..”

The Hockey News met up with various captains from the Men’s Leagues. Dan Pucillo is running the new Cape Cod Senior League on Sunday and Mon- day Nights out of Gallo in Bourne. Dan is a long time hockey goalie on the Cape and run the very successful Black Dog team over the years.

Bill Hadfield runs the Men’s league at the Charles Moore arena in Orleans. They play on Wednesday nights. Winky runs the over 40 league playing on Sundays at Hyannis. There is also a very steady league in the summer run at the Falmouth rink.

Don’t Forget the Woman’s Hockey… There is a woman’s league on the Cape. Their website can be viewed at www.ccwhl.com. Last years teams were the; Gale Force, Hat Tricks, Nor’ Easters, and The Renegades.

Established in 1997

The Cape Cod Women's Hockey League provides an environment in which any woman, regardless of ability, can enjoy playing . CCWHL is the only league in southeastern Massachusetts that encourages equal participation by all women; first-timers through elite level players are welcome. CCWHL members come from every town on the Cape between Falmouth and Orleans, as well as from Martha's Vineyard, suburban Boston, , and . We currently have six teams, with approximately 80 regis- tered players. Each year, women of all ages (over 18) join CCWHL to have fun playing organized hockey.

Chatham Beach Dog 16 Main Street Chatham 616 Main Street Chatham 508-945-3395 The Body Strong Hockey Player Body Strong Fitness center located in Chatham has a hockey training program in place. This summer many of the local high school, college, and junior players spent time with Corey Clark, personal trainer, getting ready for this season. Corey & Colin, Body Fitness owners, worked with Byron Carlisle this past summer getting him ready for the up- coming season. Byron started skating around the age of 3 on the pond behind our house in Orleans & never looked back. It wasn't long before he was playing youth hockey for the Cape Cod Coyotes & continued to do so up until middle school.

It was quite evident at this that he had a passion for the game & couldn't wait to get to the rink. After playing with the New England Jr. Hurricanes for a couple of years, he entered Nauset High School & played for the varsity team as a freshman. Following his sophomore year, he decided it would be best to test the waters (or ice as it were) & try out for some junior & midget teams off Cape.

It was also during this time that he became aware of the value of off ice training & started to work out with Corey Clark of Body Strong in Chatham. The end result was an offer to play for the Boston Advantage midget major team out of Hingham, MA.

They are in the prestigious Tier 1 AAA league & are affiliated with the USHL, so it was an easy choice for Byron. His season with the Advantage began a few weeks ago with three on ice practices per week & over a half dozen games already under his belt. He continues to work out with Corey two times a week.

Question: What’s it like going from assistant coach at Danbury to the new head coach?

“Not too hard, because during the 2nd half of last year, I was given many of the respon- sibilities”. “ In the Hockey World assistant coaches sort of act as mediators between the head coach and the players, and many assis- tant coaches become very close to the players.” “ Head coaches tend to have to assume a different presence within the club.” “It will be challenging to develop the certain persona that head coaches need to carry”.

Question: Who are the top returning players from last year?

“Alex Kirschner (He’s currently at the Elmira camp of the ECHL), Chris Seifert, Marty Moucha( He’s trying out at the American League camp at Wilkes -Barre Scranton), Chris Clark( he’s in Wheeling right now of the ECHL), Igor Karlov, Adam Blanchette& Devon Guy”. “Looks like basically everybody is coming back , and especially our goalie Niedert if he doesn’t get picked up ( He’s at Quad City camp) . “Peter Vetri, he’s one of the returning veteran tenders and will be at our camp in October”. “We did lose a couple of guys to the CHL.”

Question: Any relation to the other Phil Esposito of the Boston Bruins & the ex Tampa Bay GM?

“I played for the Atlanta Knights. During my time there , the team was affiliated with the Tampa Bay organization. “I actually got to meet the Phil Esposito of the 1970’s Bruins while playing minor hockey”. “I get that question all the time”. “But, I’m not related”. “It’s funny, everybody thinks it’s him coaching at Danbury, plus they think he might be still playing in the minors for Danbury”.

Question: Will the New Jersey Outlaws team become a similar rivalry compared to Danbury v.s. Brooklyn?

“I think the rivalry will stay with Brooklyn and grow with New Jersey as we are all very close to each other.” Three so close it should be a heated rivalry, call me around Christmas time and we’ll know”.

Question: Tell the fans about your hockey career up till now?

“ I’m very happy to be in Danbury, and is in the beginning for me”. “ I was a player and now I’m starting out a career as a coach. “In a way I’m in the same boat as some of the players, we are both in the beginning”. “It’s my job to get these guys in here, and move them out to the next level”.

“I met my wife while playing down in Mobile Alabama. “Back when I played ,there was only the East Coast league, now we have the FHL and the SPHL”. “New places for many hockey players.” “As you move up to the ECHL things get better.” “If you get the opportunity to move up it’s great.” “The proper contacts that I have in the hockey world, helped The Danbury Whalers move 12 players to the next level” “I know many ex players that I met along the way, that are now coaching at higher levels.”

“I went to Salisbury Prep, and my hockey generation( I was born in 1970) can be best described as the Jeremy Roenick and Tony Amonte group”. “I actually played with Roenick and Brian Noonan during my summer hockey training in Boston”. “Those guys were on my line, and Amonte was on another line”.

“The Whalers announced a relationship with Elmira of the ECHL, Pat Bingham is the head coach and I’ve know him for years.” Another relationship that we started is with Stan Drulia, the coach of the Wheeling team in the ECHL.” “I played with Stan in Atlan- ta, New Haven, and Nashville.”
