Jorge Marques and our "gato chato" Juan de Fuca, for the unfailing support and therapeutic purring. 5 Resumo Ao ler Niketche: Uma história de poligamia (2002) da autora moçambicana Paulina Chiziane – uma história que é por vezes divertida, por vezes desoladora e por vezes comovente, com mulheres africanas a assumirem o papel principal de um modo que nós, nos Estados Unidos, e em muitos outros países anglófonos, raramente vemos – perguntei-me por que semelhantes histórias têm tão pouca representação no mercado de literatura de língua inglesa. Pretendo assim com a presente dissertação contribuir para a partilha de histórias de Moçambique (com aplicação também a outros países africanos), examinando a teoria e a prática da tradução de Niketche para leitores norte-americanos. Começo com algumas notas sobre a vida de Chiziane e uma análise da sua obra anterior a Niketche, juntamente com uma discussão sobre a história recente e alguns aspetos culturais de Moçambique, os quais fornecem o contexto necessário para examinar com mais detalhe o enredo e alguns dos temas do romance. Segue-se uma reflexão sobre as razões que me levam a considerar que Niketche deve ser traduzido para inglês e a aventar por que tal ainda não aconteceu, o que me permitiu encetar uma tradução refletida do ponto de vista teórico-crítico. Por fim, procedo à aplicação prática da reflexão através da tradução de dois capítulos previamente selecionados, acompanhada da discussão de algumas das opções tomadas. Esta abordagem teórico-prática pretende incentivar outros tradutores a desempenharem o seu trabalho de modo produtivo no que diz respeito a histórias marginalizadas ou mesmo ignoradas, bem como a respeitarem tanto o(a) autor(a) de partida, como os leitores da língua-alvo, ao invés de colocarem em primeiro plano ideias próprias ou preconceitos. Defendo em suma que, para o caso em análise, uma "tradução ética" pode efetivamente contribuir para alargar o público de Chiziane e das suas histórias. Palavras-chave: Paulina Chiziane, Niketche, tradução, pós-colonialismo, literatura moçambicana 6 Abstract Upon reading Mozambican author Paulina Chiziane's Niketche: Uma história de poligamia (2002) – a story that is in turns funny, heartbreaking, and heartwarming, with African women in the spotlight as we in the United States and many other English-speaking countries rarely see them – I wondered why such stories had so little representation in the English-language literature market. My intention with this thesis is therefore to make another contribution to sharing stories from Mozambique (and other African countries) by discussing the theory and practice of translating Niketche for a North American audience. First, some notes on Chiziane's life and an analysis of her work leading up to Niketche along with discussion of Mozambique's recent history and some cultural aspects provide the context necessary to take a closer look at the story's plot and some of its themes. Then, thoughts on why Niketche should be translated into English, and why it hasn't yet been, lead to an investigation of established theories in order to develop an approach for a conscientious translation. Finally, the approach is applied in practice to two selected chapters with discussion of some of the specific decisions made. This theoretical/practical approach intends to help and incentivize other translators to do productive work on marginalized or even ignored stories and to respect and advocate for the original author as well as for the target-language readers rather than placing their own ideas and preconceptions at the forefront. In the case investigated here, I contend that "ethical translation" can contribute to increasing the audience for Chiziane and her stories. Keywords: Paulina Chiziane, Niketche, translation, postcolonialism, Mozambican literature 7 Introduction I believe strongly in the importance of sharing stories. It's how people connect, learn more about each other, come to understand each other and perhaps even increase empathy for "them," for others, for those who have lived different lives, have had different experiences, and have different outlooks.1 Before moving to Portugal, I knew very little about lusophone literature beyond Fernando Pessoa and Paulo Coelho. I therefore jumped at the chance to take two classes on Portuguese-language African literature. Very few stories coming out of Mozambique, Angola, Cabo Verde, and São Tomé e Príncipe have made their way to the United States, where I'm originally from, and I was eager to hear what authors from those countries had to say. Upon reading Paulina Chiziane's Niketche: Uma história de poligamia (2002) – a story that is in turns funny, heartbreaking, and heartwarming, with African women in the spotlight as we in the United States and many other English-speaking countries rarely see them – I wondered even more why these works had so little representation in the English-language literature market. My intention with this thesis is therefore to make another contribution to sharing stories from this part of the world by discussing the theory (as described in the following paragraph on Part II) and practice (as described in the following paragraph on Part III) of translating Niketche for a North American audience. In Part I, I discuss the book in question, Niketche, and the context surrounding it. I begin with the author, Paulina Chiziane – her own story as well as the labels given to her by others and the ones she applies to herself. Next, I provide some notes on customs in Mozambique as they relate to themes explored in the book, including polygamy and traditions in the north and the south. To locate Niketche in relation to the rest of Chiziane's body of work, I give brief summaries of the preceding books in order to then compare themes and styles. Finally, I approach Niketche itself – first with a summary of the plot, then with an exploration of some of the key points and themes throughout the story and how they relate to Chiziane's views as previously discussed. Some of these include cultural and traditional differences between the north and south of Mozambique, the importance of solidarity, religion, how women can take advantage of seemingly oppressive traditional rules, descriptions of traditions and cultural aspects, and sharing stories – especially those of women.     Portuguese language in Angola: luso-creoles' missing link? John M. Lipski {presented at annual meeting of the AATSP, San Diego, August 9, 1995} 0. Introduction Portuguese explorers first reached the Congo Basin in the late 15th century, beginning a linguistic and cultural presence that in some regions was to last for 500 years. In other areas of Africa, Portuguese-based creoles rapidly developed, while for several centuries pidginized Portuguese was a major lingua franca for the Atlantic slave trade, and has been implicated in the formation of many Afro- American creoles. The original Portuguese presence in southwestern Africa was confined to limited missionary activity, and to slave trading in coastal depots, but in the late 19th century, Portugal reentered the Congo-Angola region as a colonial power, committed to establishing permanent European settlements in Africa, and to Europeanizing the native African population. In the intervening centuries, Angola and the Portuguese Congo were the source of thousands of slaves sent to the Americas, whose language and culture profoundly influenced Latin American varieties of Portuguese and Spanish. Despite the key position of the Congo-Angola region for Ibero-American linguistic development, little is known of the continuing use of the Portuguese language by Africans in Congo-Angola during most of the five centuries in question. Only in recent years has some attention been directed to the Portuguese language spoken non-natively but extensively in Angola and Mozambique (Gonçalves 1983). In Angola, the urban second-language varieties of Portuguese, especially as spoken in the squatter communities of Luanda, have been referred to as Musseque Portuguese, a name derived from the KiMbundu term used to designate the shantytowns themselves.

Couto’s work is an urgently needed constructive effort to project an alternative model of Mozambican identity. This work is a critical interpretation of Couto’s work and my approach is framed within a Cultural Studies perspective. In Mozambique, forms of neo-colonial oppression still linger and guide the political decision-making process, excluding subjects that do not conform to Western visions of progress and modernity. Couto’s literature, language and narrative style enable him to voice the emotions, frustrations, and the triumphs of Mozambican peoples. All of his texts serve to represent the local lifestyle and resistance to neo-colonial acts of authority and oppression.

This thesis is a more in-depth study of the issues involved in code switching among Angolan migrants living in Cape Town by increasing the scope of the research. The significance of this study lies in the fact that code-switching practices of Angolans in the Diaspora has not yet been investigated, and I hope that this potentially rich vein of research will be taken up by future studies. In this thesis, I explore the code-switching practices of long-term Angolans migrants in Cape Town when they interact with those who have been here for a much shorter period. In my Honours research essay, I revealed a tendency among those who have lived in Cape Town for some time to code-switch from Portuguese to English even in the presence of more recent migrants from Angola, who have little or no mastery of English. This thesis thus considers the effects of space, discourses of power, language ideologies and attitudes on the patterns of inter- and intra-sentential code-switching by these long-term migrants in interaction with each other as well as with the more recent “Angolan arrivals” in Cape Town.

The objects of analysis are the Brazilian film Terra estrangeira (1996) by directors Walter Salles and Daniela Thomas, the Brazilian novel Estive em Lisboa e lembrei de você (2009) by Luiz Ruffato, and the Portuguese film Viagem a Portugal (2011) by Sérgio Tréfaut. Keywords: Portugal; cinema; novel; Walter Salles; Luiz Ruffato; Sérgio Tréfaut Migration played a significant role in the maritime-colonial expansion of Western European powers since the early modern era, through the forced migration of millions of Africans and a mixture of voluntary and forced migration of Europeans across the Atlantic to the Americas and Africa. Such was the case throughout the history of the Portuguese empire, as well as in postcolonial Brazil, Cape Verde, and Portugal. In the case of Brazil, successive waves of forced African and voluntary European migration (as well that from East Asia and the Middle East) constitute the foundation of the modern nation- state, alongside the native Amerindian population. Cape Verde is a diasporized nation-family par excellence, in that half of its population lives outside the 144 Journal of Lusophone Studies 2.1 (Spring 2017) archipelago. The Portuguese themselves have been migrating for more than five centuries. Throughout a long history of outward migration, however, there was an important interval shortly after Portugal’s entry into the European Union, between the late 1980s and early 2000s, that witnessed the modernization and expansion of the Portuguese economy.

  • Variation and Change in the Second Person Singular Pronouns Tu and Você in Santa Catarina (Brazil)
    Izete Lehmkuhl Coelho and Christiane Maria Nunes de Souza Variation and change in the second person singular pronouns tu and você in Santa Catarina (Brazil) Abstract: This chapter aims to provide an overview regarding variation and change between tu and você pronouns in six samples of personal letters from the PHPB-SC, covering the period between 1870s and 1990s. Considering samples examined in this study, some tendencies may be signalized: (i) in the 19th century tu is largely used, while in the 20th century variation between tu and você is observed; (ii) tu is mostly correlated to null subjects, and você is mostly correlated to explicit subjects; (iii) tu seems to be associated to personal issues and você seems to be associated to professional issues; (iv) tu is used most in Greater Florianópolis mesoregion, while você is the most productive pronoun in the Planalto Serrano, Vale do Itajaí and Nourthern Santa Catarina mesoregions, and these preferences appears to have some relation to the colonization of these cities. These results are discussed based on the field of historical sociolinguistics and may contribute to the second person singular pronouns description concern- ing written Portuguese in Brazil and in Santa Catarina specifically. Keywords: second person singular pronouns, personal letters, diachrony, Flori- anópolis 1 Introduction In this chapter, we propose a mapping of the process of variation and change in the use of informal second person singular pronouns tu and você in the Portu- guese of Florianópolis, capital of the state of Santa Catarina, located in South- ern Brazil. The investigation of this linguistic phenomenon in Florianópolis is particularly interesting because the city’s patterns of use are distinct from pat- terns found in other regions of Brazil, where você has replaced tu as the informal second person singular pronoun.
