The men were instructed to destroy a letter that was compromis- ing the reputation of Fontevraud’s founder, Robert of Arbrissel (c. 1045–1116). In the twelfth century, Robert’s practice of syneisaktism2 had caused scandal and the early Fontevraudines’ connection to this (heretical) form of sexual asceticism had remained a stain on the order’s history. Five hundred years afterwards, Jeanne-Baptiste sought to obtain Robert’s canonisation and tried to erase the dark spot from all memory. Hence, the letter in St. Trinité, which discussed the scandal, had to disappear. In the end, whether due to her envoy’s incompetence or reluctance, the targeted document escaped destruction and is today housed in the Bibliothèque Municipale de Vendôme.3 1 Jeanne-Baptiste de Bourbon, born in 1608, was the daughter of Henry IV of France and his mistress Charlotte des Essarts. Prior to transferring to Fontevraud, Jeanne-Baptiste lived in Chelles, where her younger sister Marie Henriette was abbess. In 1625, Jeanne Baptiste was appointed coadjutor, i.e. the right arm and designated successor, of Fontevraud’s aging abbess Louise de Lavedan, whom she succeeded to the abbatial seat in 1637. 2 Syneisaktism, or spiritual marriage, originated in the ascetic movements of the early Christians and can be described as “cohabitation of the sexes under the condition of strict continence, [members of the sexes] sharing the same room, and sometimes the same bed, yet conducting themselves as brother and sister”.

    The Pitiful King: Tears, Blood, and Family in Revolutionary Royalism Victoria Murano Submitted to Professors Lisa Jane Graham and Linda Gerstein In partial fulfillment of the requirement of History 400: Senior Thesis Seminar Murano 1 Abstract When the French Revolution erupted in 1789, revolutionaries strove to foster a sense of freedom of expression, guaranteeing a brief freedom of the press. The eleventh article of the 1791 Declaration of the Rights of Man asserts that “The free communication of thoughts and opinions is one of man’s most precious rights; all citizens may therefore speak, write, print freely, except to answer for the abuse of this liberty in cases determined by law.” However, as France became further embroiled in the Revolution, it abandoned its allegiance to the universality of these rights, propagating pro-republican thought, and persecuting anyone who did not share these views. The royalist press was a major concern to the new republican government, because it continued to speak out in support of the king and criticize the Revolution. The existence of royalist journalists and writers thus posed a problem for revolutionaries who wanted to establish a monolithically-minded republic. Therefore, over time, they enacted repressive censorship and punishment to crack down on royalist sympathizers. Although they sent many royalist writers to prison or the guillotine, the revolutionaries ultimately failed to silence their political enemies. This thesis uses newspapers, images, and other printed media to explore royalist coverage of three events that diminished royal power: Louis XVI’s flight to Varennes in June 1791, his execution in January 1793, and the death of his nine-year-old son and heir, Louis XVII, in June 1795.

    TERESA OF ST. AUGUSTINE (Louise of France, 1737-1787) Venerable (D) Teresa, the eighth and youngest daughter of Louis XV and Mary Leszczynska, was born at Versailles on July 15, 1737. Together with her princess-sisters, she was educated in the abbey of Fontevrault, whose abbess, Madame de Rochechouard, was a woman of great merits. At the age of fourteen Teresa returned to court, very determined to give the example of a Christian princess in all she did. She first heard the call to religious life soon after her return to her family. It occurred during the clothing of a religious, at which she was present and which took place on Oct. 7, 1751, in the chapel of the Parisian Carmel in the Rue de Grenelle (today transferred to Créteil in Val-de-Marne). She immediately understood that her consecration must have as its scope the conversion of her father, whose conduct was a source of serious preoccupations. But circumstances forced her to wait for almost twenty years. While she lived at court, she sought recollection by means of an intense interior life, she conformed to the rules of a cloistered life and lived deeply the spirituality of the cenacle that the queen had gathered around herself. When the queen died in 1768 Teresa thought that the moment had come for her to inform her father, the king, of the choice that she had made. The archbishop of Paris, Christopher de Beaumont, a confidant of her secret, was willing to assume the task of intermediary. For this purpose he chose a private audience with Louis XV, who, after a delay of fifteen days, gave his consent.

He was the second son of Charles-Marie-Raymond, 5th Duke of Arenberg and the 11th Duke of Aarschot, and his wife Louise- Marguerite of La Marck. Auguste was the younger brother of Louis-Engelbert— often known as “the Blind Duke”, due to a hunting accident that claimed his sight—who became the 6th Duke of Arenberg. In 1774 Auguste-Marie- Raymond married into a French noble family by taking Marie-Françoise- Augustine-Ursule le Danois, Marquise de Cernay, as his wife, and they had one son together. He is usually known as Ernest(-Engelbert), Prince d’Arenberg (1777-1857), and after his father fled to Vienna he joined the Austrian army where he rose to the rank of major, fighting at Marengo in 1800. In 1802 he resigned his commission and returned to Belgium, where in 1803 he became a French citizen. But in 1814, when the French were pushed out of the Low Countries, he joined the Allies becoming the figurehead colonel of a newly raised regiment, and was promoted to generaal-majoor later that year in the newly formed Dutch army. Throughout his adult life Auguste-Marie-Raymond was known by the name Count of La Marck (Comte de La Marck in French), a title he inherited from his grandfather.

One of the aphorisms of Hippocrates warned that "phthisical persons die if diarrhea sets in." Prior to the introduction of chemotherapy, intestinal ulceration with fistula formation was a common finding at autopsy in patients with active cavitary lesions;' tuberculous peritonitis was a rare complication.2 The association of intes- tinal ulceration, free perforation, and peritonitis with a cavitary pulmonary lesion was vividly described in 1643 in the autopsy report of Louis XIII.3 We have found the omentum eroded, the small intestines enormously swollen, diminished in color and bathed in a quantity of muddy, purulent, serous fluid, the external surface of the liver pale, as if it had been boiled, the stomach filled with a blackish fluid that stained its lining and containing one worm approxi- mately 15 cm. in length and several other small worms, the duodenum huge and filled with bilious material, the jejunum is filled with the same material and entirely yellow inside, the ileum less tinted and less filled with a thicker material, the cecum from its origin is red and devoid of its meaty membrane, the process continuing with increasing severity until the end of the colon where an ulcer that pierced the intestine is caused by the descent of the mud exuding from the inferior mesentery that is ulcerated in several places from which more than a jug-full of spilled, purulent material accumulates throughout the abdomen, bath- ing the intestines.

I have always been interested in history (specifically ancient and medieval history) and politics, so Model UN has been a perfect fit for me. Throughout high school and college, I’ve developed a passion for exciting Model UN weekends, and I can’t wait to share one with you! Louis XI, known as the Universal Spider for his vast reach and ability to weave himself into all affairs, is one of my favorite historical figures. His continual conflicts with Charles the Bold of Burgundy and the rest of France’s nobles are some of the most interesting political struggles of the medieval world. Louis XI, through his tireless work, not only greatly transformed the monarchy but also greatly strengthened France as a kingdom and set it on its way to becoming the united nation we know today. This committee will transport you to France as it reinvents itself after the Hundred Years War. Louis XI, the current king of France, is doing everything in his power to reform and reinvigorate the French monarchy. Many view his reign as tyranny. You, the nobles of France, strive to keep the monarchy weak. For that purpose, you have formed the League of the Public Weal.

    Loire Valley Destination Guide Overview of Loire Valley Renowned for its fine wine, sumptuous châteaux and Renaissance intrigue, the valley of the Loire is rich in both history and architecture. Like the River Loire, this vast region runs through the heart of French life. Its sophisticated cities, luxuriant landscapes and magnificent food and wine add up to a bourgeois paradise.
