omecoming is an American tradition that allows Hgraduates of a high school to return to their former stomping grounds to embrace school spirit and continue to support the school as they grow older. For current students, it serves as a way to build school spirit through homecoming activities such as sports events, pep rallies, and dances. Although Homecoming may seem like a school-wide event, but it involves the SHAPE community as a whole. It’s a way for the whole community to come together and show pride. Homecoming has the promise of making an impact on a student’s high school experience. Homecoming welcomes freshmen into a fun environment with an abundance of school spirit activities, such as dress-up days, lunchtime games, and For sophomores, they have the opportunity to continue to build school spirit and establish their role in the high school food web. From a junior’s perspective, they’re competing with seniors in order to be the top dogs of the school, while seniors focus on winning the spirit stick and enjoying their last homecoming. As the games progress, the student body is represented through the actual sports teams and peers who come to support their friends. Parents come to watch their children compete against students from other schools, but where is the rest of the community? As someone from the SHAPE community with no personal connection to the school, it may seem pointless to attend the various public events throughout homecoming week.

Refreshments at the Hvidovre game

So until next time, have a great month.

58 SCL n 30th May, SICC held its annual Battlefield Ride. These are explorations of specific battlefields of World War One in the vicinity of Mons and led by a member of the SICC SICC Rides leadership team, an avid military historian with a particular Oexpertise in World War One. This year took some 22 cyclists, accompanied by a few spouses, family members, and significant others, to the little village of Flesquieres, one of the many little farming villages that dot the undulating farming land to the south of Cambrai, a mid-sized town on the road between (Like) a Valenciennes and Paris. So, what happened there, and what prompted so many to visit it? In late summer of 1917 and faced with a series of exceptionally awful battles that had settled nothing but left huge lists of the dead and wounded and nearly led to the collapse of the French Tank! Army’s morale, and with the Russian government about to end its war with Germany and thus allow for Germany’s forces on By the SICCliste the Eastern Front to join those on the Western Front, the Allies needed a victory somewhere, somehow to prevent public opinion from pushing for some sort of accommodation with Germany. The British command decided to use its new, and somewhat secret, technology against the German lines just south of Cambrai. This new tool, of course, was the tank, and the land south of Cambrai, which had seen little combat and was thus pleasingly smooth and open, was viewed as ideal for an armored attack. And so, on 23th November 1917, some 474 British tanks, accompanied by infantry from several divisions, staged a surprise attack on German lines, pushing them back some 4km over two days, an unprecedented victory during a time when battlefield gains were measured in hundreds of meters over a few weeks. Flesquieres was one of the key strongpoints in the German line, and German gunners there took out a number of British tanks before retreating – and then regrouping for the inevitable counterattack. And indeed, within a month, the German forces had re-established their line, and it would not be pierced until almost year later, as Allied forces launched a series of attacks on the German lines that would ultimately lead to the collapse of the German army’s will to fight, and Germany’s surrender on 11th November 1918.

www.shape2day.com SCL 59 Having learned a bit of the history of his own village, a local inhabitant because interested, and then outright passionate, about understanding what happened to all of those 474 British tanks that assaulted the German lines that day. After years of research and documentation, he tracked down each one’s eventual use and demise, except for two or three. And here, those few survivors of the village who recalled something from those days led to a strange tale of a buried tank that, at some point, was reached by a stairwell. Exhaustive searching, to include assistance by the British Army in its provision of ground-penetrating radar, discovered a large metal object, many meters underground, and it was dug out in 1999. That large metal object was a completely intact British tank, so well packed in the ground that little Of course, it’s possible to walk these battlefields, but covering 100km air had gotten to it, meaning it was in a remarkable stage in a day is impossible. One can drive it, but covering it that way of preservation. Destroyed in the village by at least two robs one of actual communion with the terrain and what it has to German artillery shots which also killed its entire crew, the offer. And that includes as well the many small villages, all of which tank was towed by German forces to their lines. There, show the unmistakable signs of 1920-1930s architecture, least German forces buried it and turned it into an underground of which being the fonts used on the town halls and other major command post… where it remained for 80 years. And so buildings. For if many of these villages survived the first few years today, that shattered tank is on display in a custom-made of World War One, few buildings survived the war’s last year, and museum that allows a visitor to see the only 100% original a careful eye will immediately recognize how much effort was put example of a World War One British tank, and learn its into rebuilding dozens and dozens of towns and villages, not just curious history – as well as that of its ill-fated crew of eight on this battlefield but on the entire Western Front. young men whose remains repose in the village cemetery. No tour of such ground can avoid the many, many cemeteries And so, from there, SICC’s members and supporters left on that abound, some with only a few hundred graves, but most with a 100km counter-clockwise loop that took them over the thousands – and in the case of the few German ones, tens of battlefield of the Cambrai campaign, as well as areas related thousands mixed together in large communal graves. In these latter to the final battles of World War One. And as last year, cases, we learned that some of these were not completed until the cycling over that territory revealed that this part of France mid-1970s, due to the many political and practical hurdles of finding – or the Western Front – are not as flat as history books a way to give German soldiers a proper burial in a time when feelings would lead one to believe. There are no hills, no mountains, were still raw. And our historian, as well as one of our fellow SICC and so perhaps from the air, it appears flat, but it is far from members, provided some dramatic and compelling human stories, that. This area of the Upper Somme valley serves as the reminding us that each grave holds the life of someone whose life headlands of several rivers least of which is the Escault, a was cut much too short and, in some cases, due to surprising twists small creek that becomes later the Scheldt River as it winds that are stranger than fiction. As we looked over the quiet fields with its way to Antwerp. These rivers and creeks naturally all lie their grain crops in early stages of growth, under an ever changing at the lower points of this undulating, rolling terrain. On foot sky, one cannot help but wonder if the many thousands who died or on a bike, that means one is rarely on flat ground: one is here sacrificed their lives that we may enjoy the peace, prosperity, either going uphill or downhill, never for long, and never on and tranquility we have today. And so, no, we didn’t ride a tank, very steep grades, but that irregular effort with over 1000 but we rode the ground the world’s first tanks rode and appreciated, meters of overall climbing over 100km makes pacing difficult, yet again, what history has to teach us if we can find ways to live and thus a challenging ride for many. For a few, it was a it in our own way. bit too much, and we were fortunate to have two members’ camping cars serve as team vehicles in which they could continue the tour without any further effort. Also, and not to be forgotten, the crews of those vehicles served us all a hot lunch, a welcome treat on a day that was cool and threatening to rain most of the time… but thankfully didn’t. Riding that ground revealed again how much terrain plays a role in military campaigns: the numerous folds, river bends, and woods provide for a pleasant countryside today. But it doesn’t take a military mind to see how such terrain contains so much dead ground, ideal for moving up troops unseen, as well as reverse slope positions for artillery batteries and the like. And working our bikes uphill to some of the more strategic villages made it easy to imagine the strain of the engines on those primitive tanks as they propelled themselves towards enemy lines: conversely, looking back across some of the ground made it obvious as to why the Germans had chosen to defend it, and how well it suited that purpose.
