EUROPEAN COMMISSION Brussels, C (2013) Subject: State aid/ Estonia Aid No SA.36513 (2013/N) Measure 2.7 of the Estonian Rural Development Programme 2007-2013 'Natura 2000 support for private forest land' Sir, The European Commission (hereinafter the Commission) wishes to inform Estonia that, having examined the information supplied by your authorities on the State aid measure referred to above, it has decided not to raise any objections to the relevant measure as it is compatible with the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (hereinafter the TFEU). In taking this decision the Commission has relied on the following considerations: 1. PROCEDURE (1) In accordance with Article 108(3) of the TFEU, by letter of 13 May 2013, registered as received on the same date, the Estonian Permanent Representation to the European Union notified the Commission on a simplified notification form the prolongation of the existing aid scheme N213/20101 'Natura 2000 support for private forest land' which is implemented under the Estonian Rural Development Programme 2007-2013. 2. DESCRIPTION OF THE MODIFICATION (2) It is stipulated in the national legislation that the aid applications submitted in year n shall be decided on in year n+1. Therefore, in order to be able to grant aid in respect of applications submitted in 2013, the duration of the measure needs to be extended. (3) With present notification the Estonian authorities wish to extend the duration of the measure until 31 December 2014. (4) The overall budget of the measure is increased from 20.8 million euros to 25.44 million euros.

All six Estonian MEPs share their views on the priorities and challenges. Estonian prime minister Jüri Ratas will present his country's priorities to MEPs during the plenary session in Strasbourg on Wednesday 5 July. Estonia has promised to focus on four priorities: an open an innovative economy, a safe and secure Europe, a digital Europe, and an inclusive and sustainable Europe. The six Estonian MEPs, who belong to four different political groups, agree that the priorities of their country's Council presidency will be creating a real digital single market and boosting European cooperation on defence and security. Tunne Kelam (EPP) Tunne Kelam said a successful presidency meant having to get 27 different governments to support agreements based on the EU's common interests. “This challenge will test the quality of Estonian officials and leading politicians,” he said. The priorities would be to create a common approach on security and defence policy, overcome countries' hesitations when it came to assessing Russia's aggression and work on the EU's eastern neighbourhood policy, Kelam said. He also said progress on the digital single market and the implementation of the common energy policy would be important. The MEP also underlined the need to cut red tape: “On the governmental level the presidency should create conditions for carrying out the European Commission’s deregulation programme that has to run in accordance with the principle of subsidiarity.

Europe, April 16th, 2018 #FreeInterrail Europe’s Next Erasmus Moment! Dear President Juncker, Dear Members of the European Commission, Dear President Tusk, Dear Members of the European Council, All big institutions and political projects will, at some point, have to make an important decision. This moment oftentimes requires courage and vision. It can even, depending on the institution’s scope, have a lasting impact on generations to come. The European Union is facing such a moment right now. The next years will determine whether the European Union’s vision of a peaceful, united, and supportive Europe will continue to be the continent’s leading narrative. Or, will nationalism, border walls, and opposing interests define the years to come? The key to Europe’s future lies with its youth. Will they use their key or will it be tossed away? The success of the European project depends on whether we enable young generations to experience and explore Europe for themselves, and make Europe their own. A young person cannot be a true European just by reading pamphlets and attending lectures. Such identity-building comes through personal experience, cultural exchange, friendships, and, most of all, traveling. Universal mobility is the key factor. Today, only a small fraction of European youth gets to travel to other EU countries, or profits from programmes such as Erasmus+ and the European Voluntary Service. It is the privilege of only a minority to meet their European neighbours, immerse themselves in other cultures, and get to know Europe up close. Whoever wants to secure Europe’s future and cohesion must transform a ‘privilege of the few’ to an ‘opportunity for all’.

A Look at the New European Parliament Page 1 INTERNATIONAL TRADE COMMITTEE (INTA)
THE NEW EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT KEY COMMITTEE COMPOSITION 31 JULY 2019 INTRODUCTION After several marathon sessions, the European Council agreed on the line-up for the EU “top jobs” on 2 July 2019. The deal, which notably saw German Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen (CDU, EPP) surprisingly designated as the next European Commission (EC) President, meant that the European Parliament (EP) could proceed with the election of its own leadership on 3 July. The EPP and Renew Europe (formerly ALDE) groups, in line with the agreement, did not present candidates for the EP President. As such, the vote pitted the S&D’s David-Maria Sassoli (IT) against two former Spitzenkandidaten – Ska Keller (DE) of the Greens and Jan Zahradil (CZ) of the ACRE/ECR, alongside placeholder candidate Sira Rego (ES) of GUE. Sassoli was elected President for the first half of the 2019 – 2024 mandate, while the EPP (presumably EPP Spitzenkandidat Manfred Weber) would take the reins from January 2022. The vote was largely seen as a formality and a demonstration of the three largest Groups’ capacity to govern. However, Zahradil received almost 100 votes (more than the total votes of the ECR group), and Keller received almost twice as many votes as there are Greens/EFA MEPs. This forced a second round in which Sassoli was narrowly elected with just 11 more than the necessary simple majority. Close to 12% of MEPs did not cast a ballot. MEPs also elected 14 Vice-Presidents (VPs): Mairead McGuinness (EPP, IE), Pedro Silva Pereira (S&D, PT), Rainer Wieland (EPP, DE), Katarina Barley (S&D, DE), Othmar Karas (EPP, AT), Ewa Kopacz (EPP, PL), Klara Dobrev (S&D, HU), Dita Charanzová (RE, CZ), Nicola Beer (RE, DE), Lívia Járóka (EPP, HU) and Heidi Hautala (Greens/EFA, FI) were elected in the first ballot, while Marcel Kolaja (Greens/EFA, CZ), Dimitrios Papadimoulis (GUE/NGL, EL) and Fabio Massimo Castaldo (NI, IT) needed the second round.

Mr Josep Borrell Fontelles HR / VP of the European Commission [email protected] [email protected] Brussels, 13 May 2020 Dear High Representative and Vice-President Borrell, Censorship of the joint Op-Ed marking the 45th anniversary of EU–China relations on May 6 in the China Daily With this letter we would like to express our concerns about the way in which the EEAS is engaging with its Chinese counterparts and dealing with diplomatic pressure from Chinese official authorities. During our last exchange of views in the AFET Committee on April 30, you firmly reassured the Members of the Parliament that the EU would never bow to pressure coming from Chinese channels to censor our publications. Regrettably, we must however conclude that one week later the EEAS did exactly do that by watering down a joint Op-Ed marking the 45th anniversary of EU–China relations. After pressure from Chinese authorities, the Op-Ed was published on the 6th of May in the China Daily without the reference to the origins of the coronavirus. You will agree with us, that it is most unfortunate that this happened just few days following the World Press Freedom Day on the 3rd of May. The EEAS press release on May 8 attempts to justify the decision to proceed with the censored publication on the ground of the necessity to reach out to the wider Chinese public by passing key messages on a number of priority areas. We certainly recognise the strategical importance of engaging with China and its people.
