"Planter's Paradise" traces the transnational environmental history of cane planting in Hawaiʻi, from Polynesian settlement to the early twentieth century, to explore how an export-based mono-culture plantation system eclipsed diversified farming, how cultural encounters between indigenous and Euro-American groups influenced agriculture and natural resource use, and how the politics of planting contributed to the rise of American hegemony over the islands. With research grounded in plantation records, agricultural association publications, popular media, and personal correspondence, I address sugarcane planting as a point where ideas about nature, methods of converting nature into commodities for consumption in distant markets, and nature itself influenced each other within the context of U.S. imperial expansion. I argue that the ascendance of Hawaiʻi’s sugar industry was the result of cultural encounters, economic relations, and environmental conditions at the local level, but cane planting also connected the archipelago to particular transnational networks of economic, ecological, and cultural exchange. Sugarcane planting introduced to Hawaiʻi foreign ways of relating to the natural world, a host of alien organisms, and advances in agricultural science and technology that impacted all of Hawaiian society. These introductions contributed to planters' power. By the early twentieth century, Hawaiʻi had become a planter's paradise: a society and environment transformed for the industrial cultivation of sugarcane. iii For Allison iv ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This dissertation is the result of seven years of work in the History Department at Temple University. Andrew Isenberg, my advisor, introduced me to environmental history and helped me to see the interactions of ecology, economy, and culture in history. Drew also gave me crucial early encouragement and support, pushing me to apply for doctoral school hardly a month into my first semester as a Masters student and nominating me for a University Fellowship. Drew’s comments on my drafts of this dissertation have made it much stronger. My dissertation committee members, Beth Bailey, Petra Goedde, and Richard Immerman have also improved this project significantly. Beth’s attention to my writing and repeated questions of agency have helped me focus on the human actors and individual decisions that propelled this history as I veered into more abstract questions about industries, islands, nations, and peoples. Petra gave my writing the structural push to assert my arguments more plainly and helped me investigate cultural encounters in Hawaiian history. Richard helped me think of my dissertation within the broader context of U.S. transnational history. Each of these committee members led seminars at Temple helped me to develop the ideas I put forward here. John McNeill joined my dissertation committee later; his work on environmental history in the Pacific region and plantation systems has had a significant impact on this project. Several other faculty members, students, and groups at Temple helped me develop produce this dissertation. Bryant Simon helped me pay attention to questions about the labor involved in sugarcane planting--and took me to France to present some of my work. David Watt gave me insight into the religious ideologies that influenced the v history of sugarcane in Hawaiʻi. The students in the seminars, colloquia, and workshops at the History Department and Center for the Humanities all helped me write and refine this dissertation. Bruce 2012 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT This dissertation argues that the annexation of Hawaii was not the result of an aggressive move by the United States to gain coaling stations or foreign markets, nor was it a means of preempting other foreign nations from acquiring the island or mending a psychic wound in the United States. Rather, the acquisition was the result of a seventy-year relationship brokered by Americans living on the islands and entered into by two nations attempting to find their place in the international system. Foreign policy decisions by both nations led to an increasingly dependent relationship linking Hawaii’s stability to the U.S. economy and the United States’ world power status to its access to Hawaiian ports. Analysis of this seventy-year relationship changed over time as the two nations evolved within the world system. In an attempt to maintain independence, the Hawaiian monarchy had introduced a westernized political and economic system to the islands to gain international recognition as a nation-state. This new system created a highly partisan atmosphere between natives and foreign residents who overthrew the monarchy to preserve their personal status against a rising native political challenge. These men then applied for annexation to the United States, forcing Washington to confront the final obstacle in its rise to first-tier status: its own reluctance to assume the burdens and responsibilities of an imperial policy abroad.

    Bowdoin College Commencement 1992 One of America’s leading writers of historical fiction, JAMES A. MICHENER has published more than 30 books. His writing career began with the publication in 1947 of a book of interrelated stories titled Tales of the South Pacific, based upon his experiences in the U.S. Navy where he served on 49 different Pacific islands. The work won the 1947 Pulitzer Prize, and inspired one of the most popular Broadway musicals of all time, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific, which won its own Pulitzer Prize. Michener’s first book set the course for his career, which would feature works about many cultures with emphasis on the relationships between different peoples and the need to overcome ignorance and prejudice. Random House has published Michener’s works on Japan (Sayonara), Hawaii (Hawaii), Spain (Iberia), Southeast Asia (The Voice of Asia), South Africa (The Covenant) and Poland (Poland), among others. Michener has also written a number of works about the United States, including Centennial, which became a television series, Chesapeake, and Texas. Since 1987, the prolific Michener has written five books, including Alaska and his most recent work, The Novel. His books have been issued in virtually every language in the world. Michener has also been involved in public service, beginning with an unsuccessful 1962 bid for Congress. From 1979 to 1983, he was a member of the Advisory Council to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, an experience which he used to write his 1982 novel Space.     THE SPRECKELS MANSION HISTORIC BEACH HOME At the time the house was built in the early 20th century, most of the homes being built in Coronado were Victorian-style architecture, constructed out of wood with an ornate design. At the time John D. Spreckels built his beach house, a mix of humble Italian Renaissance Revival and Beaux-Arts architectural styles, it stood in stark contrast to the neighboring homes. Today, it is one of the city’s few remaining examples possessing the distinctive characteristics of construction using reinforced concrete that has not been substantially altered. The 17,990 square-foot compound—nearly one-half acre, built on three contiguous 6,000 square-foot lots, includes a main house, a guest house and caretakers living quarters for a total of 12,750 square feet with a total of nine bedrooms, eight full bathrooms and three half bathrooms. The 6,600 square-foot main house originally featured six bedrooms, a Main House 1940’s basement and an attic has been modernized and restored to its turn of the century charm. A semi-circle drive fronted the home, while a central pergola was built atop the flat red-tiled roof as a third floor—an ideal setting to view the After recent restoration of the most historic home of Coronado, it retains Pacific Ocean. The smooth, cream-colored stucco façade completed the the most commanding vista on the island taking in America’s most Italian Renaissance look. The symmetrical appearance was further beautiful beach, the Coronado Islands, Point Loma, and romantic sunsets enhanced by chimneys at both ends of the home’s two adjoining wing.

    WILLIAM H. DORRANCE The U.S. Army on Kaua'i, 1909—1942 FOLLOWING THE ANNEXATION of the Republic of Hawai'i by the United States in 1898, the U.S. Army viewed the Islands in a strategic context. They were seen to be the advance outpost in the western defenses of the mainland United States. The airplane was in its infancy and posed no threat, so land-based cannons were emplaced on O'ahu to prevent naval bombardment of Honolulu and Pearl Harbor. Kaua'i had nothing of strategic importance that required similar fortifications. It was enough for the Army to construct a har- bor on the island suitable for receiving ocean going troop transports if an invasion were threatened. The Army's outlook changed when the performance of military airplanes improved. Advance warning and early interception of enemy aircraft approaching O'ahu were needed. Kaua'i's location relative to O'ahu became a factor, and in the 1920s the Army began to establish airfields on the island. Then, in the mid-1930s, senior officers began expressing the importance of keeping an enemy off Kaua'i at all costs. They believed that the island could help feed O'ahu in the event that Hawai'i was isolated and that Kaua'i must not be used as ajumping-off place to invade O'ahu. While a battalion of infantry was assigned to Kaua'i, little of the defense preparations was completed before the Japanese struck. Nevertheless, the Army's immediate response to the December 7, 1941, Japanese attack on O'ahu included doing what it could to strengthen Kaua'i's defenses.

Farnham ABSTRACT The purpose of this thesis is to explore the ways in which working-class Kānaka Hawai’i (Hawaiian) immigrants in the nineteenth century repurposed and repackaged precontact Hawai’i strategies of accommodation and resistance in their migration towards North America and particularly within California. The arrival of European naturalists, American missionaries, and foreign merchants in the Hawaiian Islands is frequently attributed for triggering this diaspora. However, little has been written about why Hawaiian immigrants themselves chose to migrate eastward across the Pacific or their reasons for permanent settlement in California. Like the ali’i on the Islands, Hawaiian commoners in the diaspora exercised agency in their accommodation and resistance to Pacific imperialism and colonialism as well. Blending labor history, religious history, and anthropology, this thesis adopts an interdisciplinary and ethnohistorical approach that utilizes Hawaiian-language newspapers, American missionary letters, and oral histories from California’s indigenous peoples.

List all elements of district.): The Potrero Point Historic District (also referred to as the Central Waterfront) is located in the Potrero Hill district of San Francisco on the western side of San Francisco Bay in the City of San Francisco between Mission Creek on the north and Islais Creek to the south. The approximately 500-acre area is more precisely described as a roughly rectangular district bounded by Sixteenth Street to the north, San Francisco Bay to the east, Islais Creek to the south, and U.S. Interstate 280 to the west. The area measures approximately 1.3 miles from north to south, and approximately 0.6 miles wide from east to west. (See Continuation Sheet, Pg. 2) *D4. Boundary Description (Describe limits of district and attach map showing boundary and district elements.): The Potrero Point (Central Waterfront) area is enclosed within a rectangle formed by the following streets and natural features: Beginning at the northwest corner of Pennsylvania and Sixteenth streets, the northern boundary of the area extends east along Sixteenth Street into San Francisco Bay. The boundary turns ninety degrees and heads south through the bay encompassing the entirety of Piers 70 and 80. At Islais Creek Channel, the boundary makes a ninety degree turn and heads west along the southern shore of the channel.
