1 Introduction

This manual has been approved by Le Petit Conseil (LPC) and is to be used for all investitures.

There is flexibility to accommodate local traditions provided, however, that the required components are included in every investiture.

The manual is not designed to introduce more bureaucracy to the investiture process. It is meant to clarify and remove uncertainty.

The Rules of the Sovereign Order – 2008 related to investitures must be read and complied with when applying the contents of this manual. The relevant parts of the rules are contained in Appendix (K) of the manual.

Investitures will only take place when they have been requested and approved using the Investiture Request Form included herewith as Appendix (M). Please note that a minimum of 5 aspirants is required for an investiture to be held.

The responsible for an investiture shall send a draft of the proposed investiture program to the Presiding Officer for the investiture, the Grand Marshal and the Convenor of the Ecclesiastical Council at least 6 weeks to the investiture. The Presiding Officer, the Grand Marshal and the Convenor of the Ecclesiastical Council shall respond promptly with any comments so that final printing can occur on a timely basis.

Investitures will always be conducted at a time and at a location approved by LPC. While it is expected that the Service will be in a church approved by LPC there may be occasional exceptions where the Service is held in another venue approved by LPC.

2 It is strongly recommended that the host Marshal recruit sufficient ushers in order to direct guests, aspirants and the members in the procession to their places in the church.

Throughout this manual, there is reference to “Commandery”. Some investitures are presented by the on behalf of several . In there are with no Commanderies. Wording in the Order of Service Program should be altered accordingly.

Much preparation is required in order to have an investiture executed with the impressive formality which the Aspirants and Promotees (in particular) deserve to experience as they join the Order or are promoted.

An Investiture Committee should be formed approximately two months before the date of the investiture.

The Committee should include the Commander, the Marshal (someone who has had appropriate training and experience for this duty), a Deputy Marshal, , Head Usher & the Regalia Custodian.

If the investiture is part of a Sovereign Council meeting, particularly in a location which does not have a strong local Commandery, the Investiture Committee might include persons suggested by members of LPC in order to ensure adequate experience is present.

Particularly for larger Commanderies, several meetings may be required to ensure that the church service will run smoothly.

The Committee should ensure that it receives and finalizes: a) The list of attendees to be used to plan the In/Out

3 b) A floor plan of the church and it’s microphone placements – to be used for the placement of the speaker’s podium, regalia desk, and the seating for participants. c) A seating plan in the church – using the final list of participants- listed appropriately by rank – for the Procession In & Out. This seating plan will be made available to all ushers before the rehearsal commences. d) Appropriate written words to be read from the podium by the Deputy Marshal (or other person familiar with the addressee) with respect to Promotions, Elections, Inductions and Awards. e) A draft of the Order of Service – which will need constant updates as the list of participants changes. f) A well worded notice to all attendees which emphasizes attendance at the rehearsal for all officers of the Order, all ushers, aspirants, and members being promoted, elected or inducted.

At the breakfast for the aspirants, there should be some explanation about what will happen at the rehearsal.

The Order of Service programs, the lists for the Processions In/Out, the seating plan in the church, the flags, the sword(s) and some regalia should all be used to ensure that the rehearsal sets everyone up for an impressive ceremony.

4 Standard Order of Service Program

Following this commentary, which includes some cautions, is a template suitable for most investiture service programs.

It must be remembered that the tradition of a denomination or of national usage shall take precedence over a particular form of Service. The principal items set out below should be observed within any Service, but they are subject to the religious requirements of confession and usage of the host Unit. i. Allocution ii. Call to Worship iii. Reading of The Epistle and Gospel - Optional Homily iv. Recitation of The Nicene Creed v. Blessing of the Regalia vi. Promotion and Induction, when applicable vii. Vow of the / viii. Investiture ix. Prayers & Benediction

The choice of hymns and music played during the Service shall be at the discretion of the Clergy of the Commandery/Unit provided, however, the choices are part of the approval required for the Order of Service referred to above in the introduction.

5 When listing participants with their post nominals, it is important to remember to do that properly. Members who have been awarded the Certificate of Merit are not entitled to post nominals. Members who have been awarded the of Merit and/or Cross of Merit shall be listed with their rank (e.g. GCSJ) followed by the (s) post nominals (e.g. CMSJ, MMSJ if both are held).

When listing, on the last page of the program, those being promoted and/or inducted, it may not be appropriate to also list those who will receive awards because it should, hopefully, be a very pleasant surprise when the name(s) are announced by the Deputy Marshal.

Participants in the Service shall remove their right hand gloves before shaking hands and placing their hands on the Bible.

It is appropriate to have aspirants and those being promoted receive their Warrants/Certificates either as they are greeted by senior officers following their investiture – or at the function that follows the Service.

It is appropriate to use either the term “” or “Marshal” when referring to the person/position directing traffic during the Service.

The term “Officiant” means Officiating Clergy.

6 The following template happens to be on 8 ½” x 11” paper. There is no specific page size, paper quality, type size, or colour requirements with respect to the printed copy except for the eagle emblem.

Where the words “Presiding Officer” are used in the following template, the position actually leading the Service e.g., Grand , Grand Commander or other member of Le Petit Conseil will be inserted.

God keep our land glorious and free! O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. e.g. The Star Spangled Banner (Host Country) Oh, say can you see, by the dawn's early light, What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming? And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. 12 ALLOCUTION (History of the Order) (Reader uses Appendix L) (state the name of the speaker)

READINGS AND PRAYERS Officiant: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Response: And also with you. Officiant: Let us pray. O Lord, we beseech you to keep your household the Church in continual godliness that, through your protection, it may be free from all adversities and given to serve you in all good works to the glory of your name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Reading: (state the name of the reader here) (An appropriate lesson from the Old or New Testaments selected by Clergy will be read) e.g., a reading from the first letter of St. John. (There may be occasions when another Epistle may be more conducive to the moment. Using the same scripture for every investiture can become a bit confining). Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love. God's love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Beloved, since God loved us so much, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God lives in us, and his love is perfected in us. By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. And we have seen and do testify that the Father has sent his Son as the Saviour of the world. God abides in those who confess that Jesus is the Son of God, and they abide in God. So we have known and believe the love that God has for us. (1 John 4:7-16, NRSV) The word of the Lord. 13 Response: Thanks be to God. The congregation stands. N.B. Some denominations have a tradition that the congregation is seated for the reading of the Gospel. Officiant: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them saying: Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:1-10 NRSV) This is the Gospel of Christ. Response: Thanks be to God.

Homily: At the direction of the Officiant a brief homily on the occasion following the Gospel may prevent the occasion from becoming repetitious. There are also times and places when a suitable homily is not possible, according to the availability of clergy. The congregation stands.

It is important that the aspirants properly recite the Nicene Creed clearly. To ensure that this is done it may be appropriate to have each aspirant read the Creed from a printed card he/she holds in the language of the individual aspirant. The Officiant may also ask the rest of the congregation reciting the Creed to speak somewhat quietly – to emphasize and hear the recitation by the aspirants. It may also be appropriate to ask the aspirants to turn and face the congregation while reciting the Creed. Officiant: Together, let us make profession of our Christian Faith. We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. 14 We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

N.B. The Book of Alternative Services of the Anglican Church of Canada has revised slightly the words which may be more user friendly to those of other denominations. The 1979 edition of The Book of Common Prayer of The Episcopal Church in the USA, The Roman Catholic Missal in its many languages around the world, and Official Books of Liturgy from other Christian denominations may also be more user friendly.

15 The congregation sits.

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Upon the true faith of a Christian, may God witness that I hereby vow, and dedicate myself, as a servant of Christ and the poor, the first qualification of a true Knight. As a member of the Body of Christ, I promise to be faithful and loyal to the ideals of the Sovereign Order of St. John of Jerusalem; to do everything, in my power, to contribute to its glory, protection, prosperity, support and utility; to combat everything prejudicial to its well-being; never to act contrary to its dignity, but conduct myself always as a true Knight of Christ, that is to say, as a good Christian and a person of . I therefore in all humility, charity and respect, agree to join to bring about by prayer and deed, salvation to all, by helping to promote a lasting Christian unity. I will adorn my knighthood with true charity, the mother and solid foundation of all . I will wear on my person the famous of Amalfi with its eight points constantly reminding me of my religious vow to always bear on my heart the Cross of Jesus Christ adorned with the virtues that attend it. Officiant then stands before each Aspirant who places his/her right hand (with the right hand glove removed) on the Bible and says: "So help me God." (In his/her native language)

17 The congregation sits. The Marshall will lead Aspirants back to their places. The Prior//Senior Officer addresses those to be Knighted. We wear this white cross as a sign of purity. Wear it also within your heart as well as outwardly, and keep it without soil or stain. This cross has four arms; it has eight points. The arms and the points have a symbolic meaning. The four arms represent the four cardinal virtues: prudence, justice, fortitude and temperance. The eight points are signs of the eight Beatitudes, which you must preserve. In the Beatitudes you are called to holiness and spiritual joy; to be gentle in word and deed; to long for the coming of the Kingdom; to confidently lean upon God; to seek God's redeeming grace; to have mercy as God is merciful to you; to let the Holy Spirit rule in your life and to make even though you may be reviled and persecuted. The Presiding Officer addresses those to be Knighted. I welcome you into our Sovereign Order, and by the power vested in me, I invest you as Members of our Sovereign Order. You have been chosen to be a Knight or Dame in our Sovereign Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, Knights Hospitaller, because you have distinguished yourself in your field of endeavour and have proven yourself devoted to philanthropic service and concern for humanity. I am delighted to have you as Members of our Sovereign Order to serve with us for faith and for service to humanity. As names are called, by The Deputy Marshal, The Marshal will direct each Aspirant, in turn, to the faldstool. Men will kneel. Women and Clerics will stand. The Presiding Officer: I, (Use title and name of the Presiding Officer) by the authority delegated to me (these bolded words are only used if the Presiding Officer is not the ) hereby bestow on you the rank of Knight (Dame) of Honour of the Sovereign Order of St. John of Jerusalem, Knights Hospitaller. If the aspirant is of noble descent, or has a title, the entry level is normally at the rank of Knight or Dame of Justice.

18 The Presiding Officer will take the Sword and dub each Knight. The Presiding Officer hands the Sword to the Sword Bearer who holds it at the "present". For each Dame, the Presiding Officer will place his hand on the Aspirant's shoulder. The attendant hands the of office to the Presiding Officer who places it around the neck of the Knight or Dame, assisted by the attendant. The Knight or Dame will stand while the robe is placed on his or her shoulders. Then each Knight or Dame will proceed to be greeted by the senior officers present (Grand Prior, Prior, Commander) and to receive his or her Warrant (unless the Warrant is to be presented at the function which follows the service). Then each Knight or Dame will return to his or her seat. The Presiding Officer and the Sword Bearer resume their places. CHOIR: Anthem (optional) The congregation stands after the Anthem.

19 Officiant: Christ our Lord calls us to bear witness to him. Let us ask that we as Christians and Knights and Dames of the Sovereign Order of St. John of Jerusalem may answer his call. Let us pray. Bless and strengthen the Sovereign Order of St. John of Jerusalem and inspire and guide its members that all may bear witness to Christ our Lord and our unity with him. Lord hear us. Response: Lord graciously hear us. Lord hear us. Response: Lord graciously hear us. Officiant: Look with compassion on the struggles of the poor, the desolation of the orphans, the helplessness of the handicapped, the anguish of the incurably ill, the failing strength of the aged and the grief of widows. Lord hear us. Response: Lord graciously hear us. Officiant: We bless your holy name for all who in life and death have glorified you; beseeching you to give us grace that we may follow their good examples and, with them, be partakers of your heavenly kingdom. Lord hear us. Response: Lord graciously hear us. Officiant: Let us pray in the words our Lord taught us, saying together: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Officiant: O God, who by the grace of your Holy Spirit has filled the hearts of your faithful people with the gift of charity: grant to your servants, for whom we implore your mercy, health of body and mind, that they may love you with all their heart, soul, mind and strength; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Rehearsal

A rehearsal of the investiture must always be held in the church. It will probably take from 1-2 hours to complete. The actual Service should be planned so that it is completed within 1 hour.

All officiating officers, sword bearer(s), flag bearers, aspirants, marshals, ushers, candidates for promotion, candidates for election, and regalia handlers should be present.

A Rehearsal should always start with a procession “in” during which all participants proceed to their appointed seats. The remainder of the rehearsal should then take place – followed by a procession “out”.

A coat rack for aspirant robes and a regalia table should be put into places convenient for their use during the service.

Mobile microphones should be available for the Presiding Officer and the Clergy. A fixed microphone should be located where the Marshal’s designate will be announcing the names of those to be invested, promoted and awarded. A microphone should also be available for the presenter of the Allocution.

The Marshal should likely be free to move around during the investiture and will direct the candidates as and when they are to be presented to the presiding officer. There will be no formalities (e.g. bowing) between the Marshal and the candidates.

The Marshal will appoint a Deputy who will be at a microphone announcing the names of the candidates for investiture, promotion, election, awards and deceased members to the Presiding Officer.

37 APPENDIX K

The following parts of the Rules are relevant at investitures:

- Page 5 Beatitudes

“The Cross of Amalfi bears the eight points representing the Beatitudes and should be referenced in the Service of Investiture.”

- Page 55 Sword

“The Sword to be used at an Investiture should be reserved for that purpose”.

- Page 28 Investiture

“Investiture is a formal Service of a Christian chivalric nature signifying Admission to the Sovereign Order as a Member.

A Petitioner may be deemed eligible for Investiture into the Sovereign Order based upon the following qualifications:

Meets the requirements as specified under Petitioner.

The Aspirant has completed the Petition for Admission noting his or her and the Petition has received full approval.

The Aspirant participates in the reciting of the Nicene Creed in which it affirmed “We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.”

Investiture only be conducted by the Grand Master or by a Member of Le Petit Conseil appointed, in writing, by the Grand Master for that purpose.

Investitures are conducted under the authority of the particular Prior and Grand Prior or in the case of Independent Commanderies by the authority of the Grand Commander when appropriate.

THE ALLOCUTION

It is indeed a pleasure for me to be with you today, on this special occasion for your

Commandery, as you welcome new Dames and Knights into the Sovereign Order of St.

John of Jerusalem, Knights Hospitaller.

For the benefit of our guests, and those who will enter the Sovereign Order today I will take a few minutes to tell you briefly about the history and objectives of the Sovereign

Order and how a Chivalric Order is different than a Charitable Club.

Our history of defending our Christian faith through our own Naval and Military forces during the , especially the in 1565, is well known.

However, the fact that our hospitals during those centuries provided leading edge medical care to all is less well known.

Our rich heritage of defending the Christian religion and serving humanity goes back over

900 years to the time of the First Crusade. When the Crusaders stormed the gates of

Jerusalem in 1099, they found a hospice, later dedicated to St. John the Baptist, which had

45 been established for the purpose of helping sick and weary people who had made pilgrimages to the Holy Land, which included both Christian and Muslim travelers.

The hospice received support from the merchants of Amalfi, a port near Naples, to assist traders as well as pilgrims. Their emblem, in the form of the Eight Pointed Cross of

Amalfi, is the cross we wear with such pride today. In 1113, the brothers of the Hospice were recognized as an Order of Knighthood, and in 1126, they also took on a military role. After two hundred years of crusading, however, European support was waning and, in 1291, the order lost its last foothold in the East, that of Acre.

After a brief time on Cyprus, they went to Rhodes, which they held for some 213 years. They became renowned for their hospital and advanced medical treatment.

However, they were attacked in 1521 by overwhelming forces under the command of

Suleiman the Magnificent. Although the knights lost, they were permitted to leave

Rhodes, taking with them their sacred relics, which Suleiman allowed because they had fought so bravely and honorably against overwhelming odds.

For a short time, the knights were without a home. But in March of 1530, the Holy

Roman , Charles V, because of his admiration for the valor of the Knights in their defense of Rhodes, signed “the Act of Donation of Malta” bestowing the Island of Malta to the Order along with several other nearby islands

46 The only feudal service demanded in return was the annual payment, on All Saint’s

Day, of a single falcon, which was to be given to Charles’ in Sicily. This annual token payment was the origin of the legend of the Maltese Falcon.

As they had done on Rhodes, the Knights built a great hospital. They strongly fortified the island and greatly expanded their Navy. Their wealth expanded rapidly, and the

Order became the owner of vast properties throughout the Christian World. Their skills and knowledge as bankers for the world became renowned.

On Malta however, the Order, being a strong naval presence in the Mediterranean, faced a determined attack, this time by a force of 40,000 men. The Knights, about 650 strong, fought bravely, and, although they sustained great losses, they eventually forced the enemy to withdraw. This battle went down in history as “The Great Siege of Malta”. The Knights remained on Malta until seized the Islands, and the wealth of the Order, on his way to Egypt in 1798.

Shortly before this attack, Paul I, Emperor of all the Russia’s, had taken the Order under his protection. Thus, when the Order was forced to leave the island, the main body of knights went to St. Petersburg, while others sought the protection of the .

Tsar Paul expanded the former Priory of Poland to accommodate Roman Catholic knights. He also created an ecumenical priory for other Christian knights, the Russian

47 members, and members of the . Our Order continues to be an ecumenical

Christian Order to this day and is described in our present Constitution as:

An Ecumenical and International Community of Christian Knights and Dames.

In 1799, Paul was elected the 70th Grand Master of the Order, and he soon created an additional 118 Hereditary Commanders. After Paul was assassinated, the new

Emperor, Alexander I, assumed protection of the Russian Order.

Since the beginning of the Reformation, the Heads of the Royal Houses of ,

England, the and Sweden have, at various times, maintained or initiated separate Protestant branches of the Order, all of which have a great deal of merit and are worthy of our respect.

Our Order has a continuing tradition with those Hospitallers who founded the first hospice in Jerusalem because of the actions of Tsar Paul, and it continues to practice the fundamental tenet of serving Christ’s sick and poor.

After the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917, many of the Russian Hereditary Knights of the Order went into exile in Europe and America.

King Alexander, King of Yugoslavia, was a member of the most closely related Orthodox

Royal Family to that of the , the House of Karageorgevitch. At the time of the

48 Russian Revolution, the Sacred Relics of the Order were sent to the Yugoslav Royal

Family for safekeeping. The Right Hand of St. John the Baptist is stored and displayed to this day in the Cetinje Monastery in Montenegro.

In 1962, King Peter II, King of Yugoslavia, in exile and residing in London, was confirmed as High Protector. Importantly, His Majesty was descended both from Tsar

Paul I and and was a cousin of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. In 1964,

King Peter II, gave us our present Charter and Constitution. These documents contain the guidelines that we follow in our continuing work of assisting the less fortunate, in accordance with the traditions of the Order throughout the ages.

Also in 1964, Col. Paul de Granier de Cassagnac was elected Grand Master for life. Later in 1964, King Peter was elected as the Order’s 73rd Grand Master for life as well by a group of Heredity Knights of the Order meeting in New York. This resulted in two parallel elements of the Order, both of which maintained the continuity of the Order of

St. John with that formed in 1113 and operating under the guidance of the Constitution issued by King Peter II in 1964.

Both these lines of the Order of St. John have subsequently maintained continuity with the traditions of the Order from its beginning through election of their leadership under

Grand Masters and Lieutenant Grand Masters as well as continuity of Legislative Rule in

Accordance with King Peter II Constitution.

49 Under the leadership of a Working Group from both lines, chaired by H.E. Yves de

Villepin, Grand Master Emeritus flowing from the de Cassagnac line as Grand Master, a full reunification was finalized in Budapest, Hungary in 2010. Moreover, in 1999 Queen

Elizabeth II, as Queen of Canada, accorded recognition of SOSJ. All of these facts validate the direct linkage of SOSJ through Tsar Nicholas II directly back to Tsar Paul I as well as the original Order of the Hospitallers.

Adhering to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, we have ensured that Dames now play an equal role in our Order to that of the Knights. By decree of the

Sovereign Council Meeting held in England in 1998, Dames may now hold any office within the Order.

The Principal Objectives Of The Order Are:

 Defense of our Christian religion against atheism

 Promotion of the of a free world and the rights of man, as defined in the

universal declaration of the United Nations

 Devotion to love and charity for our man

50 AND

 Dedication to serving, in a significant way, the Lord’s sick and the Lord’s poor.

It is suitable to close with our motto:

PRO FIDE, PRO UTILITATE HOMINUM

FOR FAITH, FOR SERVICE TO HUMANITY
