These hopeful 2007 cinematog- raphers come from 33 different countries around the world to have their master- piece viewed and judged. To be a part of the cinematic vot- ing experience in Michigan, attend the showing at the Vickers Theatre in Three Oaks on Saturday, September 29th at 1 p.m. Its address and contact phone number is, 6 North Elm Street, Three Oaks, MI 269- Cherries 756-3522, which is located approximately 10 miles from Lines the Indiana border. The ticket cost is $8 at the Three Oaks location. The main storyline is to have the fi lmmaker’s fi lm chosen as one of the 12 fi nal pictures that will be watched by moviegoers in 99 cities spanning over three continents: North America, South America, and Europe. These 12 celluloid creations will be show-cased in Three Oaks and Ann Arbor Mich- igan the last weekend in September. The theatre has chosen to show fi lms and host fi lm lete festivals, rather than traditional Boris’s CompRules blockbuster movies, which only Book of just adds to its appeal. The classy Clooney ambience not only partakes in fi lms, but also has live performances; art, music, and even poetry readings. The winners will then be posted on the Manhattan Short Film Festival’s Web site, http:// msfi lmfest.com/ at 9 p.m. Central Standard Time. To win one of the valuable prizes is the climax of the story, but just being one of the 12 fi nalists is to make movie history in its own right. There were a total of 456 movie entries made this year by the July 31st deadline. On the one big screen in Three Oaks The Prestidigator all 12 fi lms will be shown, each being 12 minutes or less in length. These talented fi lmmakers had to portray their entire story, including introducing characters, the theme, and even in some a confl ict and resolution in this short amount of time. Between Sunday, September 23rd and Sunday, September 30th a blog is available to the fi lmgoers to blog their thoughts on the fi lms. This blog is to encourage audiences to participate more in the pro- cess and enhance the festivals experience even after the movies have ended.     1997 SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL The 1997 Sundance Film Festival continued to attract crowds, international attention and an appreciative group of alumni fi lmmakers. Many of the Premiere fi lmmakers were returning directors (Errol Morris, Tom DiCillo, Victor Nunez, Gregg Araki, Kevin Smith), whose earlier, sometimes unknown, work had received a warm reception at Sundance. The Piper-Heidsieck tribute to independent vision went to actor/director Tim Robbins, and a major retrospective of the works of German New-Wave giant Rainer Werner Fassbinder was staged, with many of his original actors fl own in for forums. It was a fi tting tribute to both Fassbinder and the Festival and the ways that American independent cinema was indeed becoming international. At the nature center, a wildlife feeding station, bird-watching window and exhibits introduce what you’ll see on the 3 miles of trails covering these 160 rolling acres. At Potato Creek State Park, 10 miles of paved trails pass through a variety of habitats, including fields, mature woodlands, and restored prairies and wetlands. Trails range from an easy half-mile loop through wetlands and woods to the rugged 2 miles through woods to the top of Steamboat Hill for views of Worster Lake. At five St. Joseph County Parks, trails draw visitors through woods to wetlands and waterways. The largest, St. Patrick’s County Park, is known for its 11 half-mile loops past sights like an osprey nesting pole, eagle nests and a 1918 cabin. Paths traverse oak forests, pastures and river ridges. Take a plant identification book to Spicer Lake Nature Preserve, which protects 232 species, including the native baneberry, agrimony, hogpeanut, beggarticks, willowherb and bedstraw, to name a few. To see rare and endangered plants, head to Chamberlain Lake Nature Preserve. Its wetland supports unusual species like warty panic grass, pipewort and black-fruited spikerush. Another unique feature in one of the parks is the section of trees planted in 1938 to spell out Studebaker in honor of the Spicer Lake Nature Preserve former owners of the land that is now Bendix Woods County Park.

A Step at a Time ) VOLUME TWENTY NINE 1997 EDITION The Indianapolis Hiking Club was organized in January 1957 by a group of hikers who had been working on the completion of the Yellowwood Trail, a 22 mi l e cross country trail from Morgan-Monroe forest to Bear Wallow. In April of 1997 the Club celebrated 40 years of hiking and other outdoor activities with a 40th Anniversary Banquet . More about the banquet on one of the following pages . The Club bas been a leader in Indiana for outdoor recreation. Last year the Club sponsored 708 hikes, 6 weekend outings, 1 picnic, l Christmas party, and 2 General Assembly meetings. The organization has been fortunate in always having good and dedicated people to serve as officers.     INDIANA Our Land, Our Water, Our Heritage LWCF Funded Places in LWCF Success in Indiana Indiana The Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) has provided funding to help protect some of Indiana’s most special places and ensure Federal Program recreational access for hunting, fishing and other outdoor activities. Hoosier NF Indiana has received approximately $201 million in LWCF funding over Indiana Dunes NL the past five decades, protecting places such as the Indiana Dunes Patoka River NWR National Lakeshore, Hoosier National Forest and the Patoka River National Wildlife Refuge. Federal Total $ 106,000,000 Forest Legacy Program (FLP) grants are also funded under LWCF, to Forest Legacy help protect working forests. The FLP cost-share funding supports Program $ 10,000,000 timber sector jobs and sustainable forest operations while enhancing State Program wildlife habitat, water quality and recreation. For example, the FLP Total State Grants $ 85,000,000 contributed to places such as the Shawnee Hills around Indianapolis, the Land Bridge project in Brown and Monroe Counties and Luke’s Run Total $ 201,000,000 in Owen County. The FLP assists states and private forest owners to maintain working forest lands through matching grants for permanent conservation easement and fee acquisitions, and has leveraged approximately $10 million in federal funds to invest in Indiana’s forests, while protecting air and water quality, wildlife habitat, access for recreation and other public benefits provided by forests. LWCF state assistance grants have further supported hundreds of projects across Indiana’s state and local parks including Indiana Dunes State Park in Porter County, Potato Creek State Park in St.
