A Step at a Time ) VOLUME TWENTY NINE 1997 EDITION The Indianapolis Hiking Club was organized in January 1957 by a group of hikers who had been working on the completion of the Yellowwood Trail, a 22 mi l e cross country trail from Morgan-Monroe forest to Bear Wallow. In April of 1997 the Club celebrated 40 years of hiking and other outdoor activities with a 40th Anniversary Banquet . More about the banquet on one of the following pages . The Club bas been a leader in Indiana for outdoor recreation. Last year the Club sponsored 708 hikes, 6 weekend outings, 1 picnic, l Christmas party, and 2 General Assembly meetings. The organization has been fortunate in always having good and dedicated people to serve as officers. Last year the following members guided the activities of the Club while adhering to the purpose for which the Club was founded - "To Encourage a Love of Nature, Through the Promotion of Outdoor Recreation in the Form of Hikes and Outings, and to Sponsor other Ac tivities Incidental to the Foregoing". -.. .~E OFFICERS APPOINTED OFFICERS DIRECTORS President .. .. There are many Club activities you can join in. THIS IS YOUR CLUB'' TAKE PART IN IT. SPECIAL SCHEDULED EVENTS ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PARTY - On December 14th a lar ge crowd gathered at the Lawrence Park Department auditorium for t he annual Christmas Party . The pitch- in buffet dinner featured many delicious foods from members favorite recipes. It was easy to eat too much but that is what festival occasions are for. TheSweet Adelines entertained after the meal with music for the season. Santa showed up as usual . ANNUAL SUMMER PICNIC - The hikers met at 10 :00 AM at Shelter "B" in Eagle Creek Park. Af ter the hike, we all joined in for the pitch- in lunch. People like to show off their specialty items and we had some very interesting delicacies to eat. It was a lovely day in the Park to hike and visit with good friends. GENERAL ASSEMBLY MEETINGS - These mee ~ings are great opportunities for members to meet on a social basis and get better acquainted. The meeting on March 13th was at the offices of Baker and Daniels. The evening speaker was Mr. Warmsma.n of Sitzmark talking about the selection and fitting of footwear. Interesting ques~ions and answers followed his talk. On September 11th the Club met at the Epworth United Methodist Church for the election of o f f icers for the coming year . After the elections , Dr . Jeffrey Peterson, director of Sports Medicine Clinic at St. Francis Hospital talked about the treatment of non-surgical sports injuries, and how to prevent injuries when hiking. Many questions and answers followed. Refreshments were served at both meetings. _TH_E__ T_RA~I_L_B_LA __ Z_E_R ______ l_9_9_7_E_D_l_T_I_ON ____ ~T_HE ___ I_ND __ IA_NA~~-~I~K~I~N~G_;;,;CL~UB~------------~P-a_g_e __ 3~ 4CYl'H ANNIVERSARY BA.NQURT CELEBRATION - The highlight of 1997 was the banquet on April 12th at the Primo Banquet Hall, celebrating 40 years of "Happiness - A Step at a Time". The hospitality hour from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM was a time for visiting and reminiscing while looking at the many pictures and mementos on display from the previous 40 years. After a welcome from ·,e president and the invocation, the crowd of some 170 members and guests enjoyed the ~mptious dinner buffet. After dinner there were many introductions and recognitions and a brief history of the Club. We listened to Win Pulsifer's version of the Club song. Various members told about their remembrances and anecdotes from years past. The Club presented Bill and Nell Larrison with a plaque for their 33 years of service. Gnaw Bone Camp announced that they had established the "Larrison Loop" trail. And Bill Larrison received the Sagamore of the Wabash award from Governor O'Bannon as presented by Brian Burke. Many door prizes were given out near the end of the evening. The beautiful program was created and printed by Avis and Ben Shipman, and were assisted by Sham Mueller and Betty Glidewell. Inside the program was much information about the Club such as the list of current members with the date they joined the Club. Also the current officers, past presidents, and a brief history of the Club. Many people helped to make this event a success, particularly Tom and Eloise Bowers, Brian and Donna Burke, Bill and Nell Larrison, and Win Pulsifer. Eloise Bowers captured the banquet on video tape to preserve it for posterity. WEEKEND OVERNIGlIT OUTINGS SPRING MILL STATE PARK - There were some 57 members and guests and several day hikers who enjoyed a winter weekend in February at Spring Mill. Got in quite a bit of hiking, and many were fortunate to see an albino deer in the forest on one of the hikes. The social hour Saturday evening was followed after dinner by a program by Mary Sommer , park naturalist, in the Elm room. Quite warm for February and also some rain in the area, but none on our hikes. GNAW BONE CAMP - This was the Club 's 27th year at Gnaw Bone Camp for Memorial Day weekend. Some 61 members and guests plus many day hikers enjoyed the trails among the hills at Gnaw Bone. The weatherman cooperated. Saturday evening we met at the she lter for some singing . ...,........1nday after the morning hike and after lunch, it was time for a leisurely Sunday afternoon . ..ad our social hour before supper. The Johnson County Folk Singers entertained us Sunday evening with their special brand of music.
