Mehrotra2, Yue-Gao Jin1, Wei Yang1 and Cheng-Sen Li3,* SUMMARY A new species of Pistacioxylon, Pistacioxylon leilaoensis Cheng et al., showing affinities withPistacia of the Anacardiaceae is described from the Miocene of Leilao, Yuanmou Basin, Yunnan Province, southwest China. It provides data for reconstructing the phytogeographic history of Pistacia and the paleoenvironment of the Yuanmou Basin. This fossil suggests a long history of exchange of various taxa including Pistacia between Europe and East Asia during the Tertiary. Key words: Pistacia, fossil wood, phytogeography, Xiaohe Formation, Southwest China. INTRODUCTION The Yuanmou Basin of Yunnan Province, southwest China, is well known for its Yuanmou Man (Homo erectus) (Qian 1985) and hominoid fauna fossils (He 1997). Abundant hominoid and mammal fossils have been reported since 1980 from the Late Miocene Xiaohe Formation of Leilao and Xiaohe, Yuanmou Basin, Yunnan (Pan & Zong 1991; He 1997; Harrison et al. 2002; Liu & Pan 2003; Yue et al. 2003; Qi et al. 2006). The age and character of the Xiaohe fauna are similar to those of the Late Miocene Siwalik fauna of Pakistan (Pan & Zong 1991). The Yuanmou Basin might have been an important refuge for hominoids when they became extinct in the rest of Eurasia (Zhu et al. 2005). The Late Miocene Xiaohe Formation of Leilao, Yuanmou Basin, also contains fossil woods (Zhang et al. 2002) and their study can provide important information for the reconstruction of the paleoenvironment of the basin. -

(Yan refers to Yan Di, Huang refers to Huang Di and Xia refers to the Xia Dynasty). Are these true or false? We will find out from Shanhaijing ’s records and modern archaeological discoveries. Abstract Shanhaijing (Classic of Mountains and Seas ) records many ancient groups of people in Neolithic China. The five biggest were: Yan Di, Huang Di, Zhuan Xu, Di Jun and Shao Hao. These were not only the names of groups, but also the names of individuals, who were regarded by many groups as common male ancestors. These groups first lived in the Pamirs Plateau, soon gathered in the north of the Tibetan Plateau and west of the Qinghai Lake and learned from each other advanced sciences and technologies, later spread out to other places of China and built their unique ancient cultures during the Neolithic Age. The Yan Di’s offspring spread out to the west of the Taklamakan Desert;The Huang Di’s offspring spread out to the north of the Chishui River, Tianshan Mountains and further northern and northeastern areas;The Di Jun’s and Shao Hao’s offspring spread out to the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River, where the Di Jun’s offspring lived in the west of the Shao Hao’s territories, which were near the sea or in the Shandong Peninsula.Modern archaeological discoveries have revealed the authenticity of Shanhaijing ’s records. -

Country Report for the Preparation of the First Report on the State of the World’s Animal Genetic Resources Report on Domestic Animal Genetic Resources in China June 2003 Beijing CONTENTS Executive Summary Biological diversity is the basis for the existence and development of human society and has aroused the increasing great attention of international society. In June 1992, more than 150 countries including China had jointly signed the "Pact of Biological Diversity". Domestic animal genetic resources are an important component of biological diversity, precious resources formed through long-term evolution, and also the closest and most direct part of relation with human beings. Therefore, in order to realize a sustainable, stable and high-efficient animal production, it is of great significance to meet even higher demand for animal and poultry product varieties and quality by human society, strengthen conservation, and effective, rational and sustainable utilization of animal and poultry genetic resources. The "Report on Domestic Animal Genetic Resources in China" (hereinafter referred to as the "Report") was compiled in accordance with the requirements of the "World Status of Animal Genetic Resource " compiled by the FAO. The Ministry of Agriculture" (MOA) has attached great importance to the compilation of the Report, organized nearly 20 experts from administrative, technical extension, research institutes and universities to participate in the compilation team. In 1999, the first meeting of the compilation staff members had been held in the National Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Service, discussed on the compilation outline and division of labor in the Report compilation, and smoothly fulfilled the tasks to each of the compilers. -

Silencing Complaints Chinese Human Rights Defenders March 11, 2008 Chinese Human Rights Defenders (CHRD) Web: http://crd-net.org/ Email: [email protected] One World, One Dream: Universal Human Rights Silencing Complaints: Human Rights Abuses Against Petitioners in China A report by Chinese Human Rights Defenders In its Special Series on Human Rights and the Olympics Abstract As China prepares to host the Olympics, this report finds that illegal interception and arbitrary detention of petitioners bringing grievances to higher authorities have become more systematic and extensive, especially in the host city of the Olympic Games, Beijing. ―The most repressive mechanisms are now being employed to block the steady stream of petitioners from registering their grievances in Beijing. The Chinese government wants to erase the image of people protesting in front of government buildings, as it would ruin the meticulously cultivated impression of a contented, modern, prosperous China welcoming the world to the Olympics this summer,‖ said Liu Debo,1 who participated in the investigations and research for this report. Petitioners, officially estimated to be 10 million, are amongst those most vulnerable to human rights abuses in China today. As they bring complaints about lower levels of government to higher authorities, they face harassment and retaliation. Officially, the Chinese government encourages petitions and has an extensive governmental bureaucracy to handle them. In practice, however, officials at all levels of government have a vested interest in preventing petitioners from speaking up about the mistreatment and injustices they have suffered. The Chinese government has developed a complex extra-legal system to intercept, confine, and punish petitioners in order to control and silence them, often employing brutal means such as assault, surveillance, harassment of family members, kidnapping, and incarceration in secret detention centers, psychiatric institutions and Re-education through Labor camps. -

REPORT TO COUNCIL REGARDING THE CITY’S DELEGATION TO CHINA IN 2015 From: Han Jie Davis Date: 11 December 2015 From 6th Oct to 16th Oct 2015, the City’s delegation visited Linfen City in Shanxi Province, Zhoushan and Hangzhou City in Zhejiang Province of China. Linfen Zhoushan Hangzhou The delegation was headed by Ken Diehm, CEO of the City of Greater Geraldton (CGG), and included Cr Shane Van Styn, Brian Robartson, Manager Economic, Land and Property Development of CGG, Han Jie Davis, Economic Development Officer of CGG, Fiona Shallcross, Project Manager of Mid West Development Commission, Jacinta Shen, Marketing Officer of Geraldton Air Charter, Barry Humfrey, Managing Director of Humfrey Land Development, and John Gooch, Managing Director of Shine Aviation. Total cost for the 5 delegates of the City and the Midwest Tourism Alliance is $16,387 (e.g. $3277 per delegate). Cost for Fiona Shallcross is covered by the MWDC. Mr Barry Humfrey and Mr John Gooch joined the delegation at their own expenses. The Zhoushan City Government generously agreed to meet all conference costs for all delegates from Geraldton, including registrations, accommodation, meals, and travel whilst in China during the Conference. Linfen City Government covered the cost for transportation and meals in Linfen City. External delegates have provided the City with a report on the delegation and are attached for reference. Visit to Linfen Itinerary From 9th Oct to 10th Oct, the delegation visited Xiangfen County, Tao Temple Historical Relics, Ding Village Fork Museum, State Museum of Jin and Fen River Landscape Park. A signing ceremony and introduction meeting was held by Linfen City Government. -

They mostly comprise large samples of isolated teeth, but there are also several partial or complete adult crania from Shihuiba and a single juvenile cranium from Yuanmou. Here we describe a new, relatively complete and largely undistorted juvenile cranium from the terminal Miocene locality of Shuitangba, also in Yunnan. It is only the second ape juvenile cranium recovered from the Miocene of Eurasia and it is provisionally assigned to the species present at Shihuiba, Lufengpithecus lufengensis. -

However, existing methods only concen- trate on the long-tailed distribution of classes. Differently, we devote to the long-tailed domain distribution problem, which refers to the fact that a small number of domains fre- quently appear while other domains far less existing. The key challenge of the problem is that domain labels are too complicated (related to race, age, pose, illumination, etc.) Figure 1. On the Periphery of a Great “Empire”: Secondary Formation of States and Their Material Basis in the Shandong Peninsula during the Late Bronze Age, ca. 1000-500 B.C.E Minna Wu Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMIBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 @2013 Minna Wu All rights reserved ABSTRACT On the Periphery of a Great “Empire”: Secondary Formation of States and Their Material Basis in the Shandong Peninsula during the Late Bronze-Age, ca. 1000-500 B.C.E. Minna Wu The Shandong region has been of considerable interest to the study of ancient China due to its location in the eastern periphery of the central culture. For the Western Zhou state, Shandong was the “Far East” and it was a vast region of diverse landscape and complex cultural traditions during the Late Bronze-Age (1000-500 BCE). In this research, the developmental trajectories of three different types of secondary states are examined. The first type is the regional states established by the Zhou court; the second type is the indigenous Non-Zhou states with Dong Yi origins; the third type is the states that may have been formerly Shang polities and accepted Zhou rule after the Zhou conquest of Shang. On the one hand, this dissertation examines the dynamic social and cultural process in the eastern periphery in relation to the expansion and colonization of the Western Zhou state; on the other hand, it emphasizes the agency of the periphery during the formation of secondary states by examining how the polities in the periphery responded to the advances of the Western Zhou state and how local traditions impacted the composition of the local material assemblage which lay the foundation for the future prosperity of the regional culture.
