Seno has been writing since the early 1980s and is widely recognised as being one of the key figures of contemporary Indonesian literature. Throughout this thesis, Seno's works are used as the source material for an analysis of a writer's imagining of urban life in contemporary Indonesian literature. As such, this research seeks to contribute to discourses on Indonesian urban societies, Indonesian social and political cultures and contemporary Indonesian thought. I link Seno's work and studies of Indonesian urban trends with those occurring in other parts of the world. By drawing on historical, anthropological, literary and postcolonial studies of urban spaces and societies, this thesis shows the key ways in which urban spaces - particularly those of Jakarta - are imagined in the writings of Seno Gumira Ajidarma. I argue that Seno's writing allows a reading of urban spaces and societies that draw on ideas regarding Indonesian cities found in writings both from within and outside of Indonesia. This thesis uses theories developed on the idea of 'the flaneur and the practice of flanerie in contemporary urban societies. These theories are used to analyse the ways in which Seno Gumira Ajidarma writes of and about contemporary urban conditions in Indonesia in general and Jakarta in particular. I locate four primary areas where the concept of 'the flaneur is present in the writings of Seno Gumira Ajidarma. Firstly, Seno imagines the flaneur as a figure who engages in urban life in both an ambivalent and a critical manner. Secondly, he engages in flanerie as a consumer of jazz in late night jazz clubs and as a reader of news reports detailing stories of state violence far from urban Jakarta. Thirdly, he is a flaneur who negotiates the meanings of the urban soundscape. And, finally, the flaneur is a part of the urban landscape in a time of crisis who interprets the scenes before him through taking photographs and using a taxi to 4 Jakarta Flanerie: Seno Gumira Ajidarma's Writing of Urban Indonesia pass through city streets. The centralising tendency to define 'Jakarta as X' is dead (Ajidarma, 2008, p.242). Over half of the world's population lives in urban societies. Many of the largest cities in the world are in Asia. Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia, is one of several cities in Asia to be identified as a megacity (Firman, 2009; Silver, 2008): it has a huge and growing population, is densely populated and continues to spread out into other neighbouring regions. An understanding of the history and sociological conditions of Indonesia necessarily involves an analysis of the geographical, political and symbolic positions of Jakarta - and the city in general - within the Indonesian nation. Jakarta is the centre of both political and cultural power: it is the home not only of the national parliament, but also of many important cultural institutes. Jakarta's growth, density and development differentiate it significantly from other Indonesian cities: it is both exceptional as well as being a metaphor for Indonesian life. Throughout the last hundred or so years, Indonesian writers - and others who have lived in or visited the city formerly known as 'Batavia' and 'Djakarta' - have written about Jakarta and thus helped imagine it and create a vast discourse on what the city is and how it is experienced, lived and interpreted. Seno Gumira Ajidarma (b.1958) is one writer who has written incisively, creatively and critically on Jakarta and on urban conditions in Indonesia. It is because of Seno's extensive writings on Jakarta and city life, his critical acceptance as a significant writer and his ongoing productivity (as the author of some 30 books) that I have chosen him as the subject for my research. 8 Jakarta Flanerie: Seno Gumira Ajidarma's Writing of Urban Indonesia The intersection of urban life and literature is the starting point for this thesis on the writings of Seno Gumira Ajidarma. The city in literature is a site where the elements of 'change' and 'continuity' can be explored. This applies to Jakarta as it does to other cities. Jakarta, as a site of intense political meaning and symbolisation (Kusno, 2000; Permanasari, 2007), is given meaning to through literary works. Indonesian literature has long been shaped by cities and urban culture. Modern Indonesian literature is an urban product. 'Low-Malay' literature of the nineteenth century written by Indonesians of Chinese background was set in Batavia and other cities of Java (see Salmon, 1985). Early modernist writers like Mas Marco Kartodikromo wrote vivid representations of cities such as Semarang'. Recent literary products are a key source through which we can understand how cities and urban spaces are interpreted, approached and imagined in contemporary Indonesia. Seno's writings are cultural products that complement I discuss these stories in Chapter One.

    Between G elanggang and Lekra: Pramoedya's Developing Literary Concepts- by Martina Heinschke Introduction During the first decade of the New Order, the idea of the autonomy of art was the unchallenged basis for all art production considered legitimate. The term encompasses two significant assumptions. First, it includes the idea that art and/or its individual categories are recognized within society as independent sub-systems that make their own rules, i.e. that art is not subject to influences exerted by other social sub-systems (politics and religion, for example). Secondly, it entails a complex of aesthetic notions that basically tend to exclude all non-artistic considerations from the aesthetic field and to define art as an activity detached from everyday life. An aesthetics of autonomy can create problems for its adherents, as a review of recent occidental art and literary history makes clear. Artists have attempted to overcome these problems by reasserting social ideals (e.g. as in naturalism) or through revolt, as in the avant-garde movements of the twentieth century which challenged the aesthetic norms of the autonomous work of art in order to relocate aesthetic experience at a pivotal point in relation to individual and social life.* 1 * This article is based on parts of my doctoral thesis, Angkatan 45.     THE THORNY ROSE: THE AVOIDANCE OF PASSION IN MODERN INDONESIAN LITERATURE1 Harry Aveling One of the important shortcomings of modern Indonesian literature is the failure of its authors, on the whole young, well-educated men of the upper and more modernized strata of society, to deal in a convincing manner with the topic of adult heterosexual passion. This problem includes, and partly arises from, an inadequacy in portraying realistic female char­ acters which verges, at times, on something which might be considered sadism. What is involved here is not merely an inability to come to terms with Western concepts of romantic love, as explicated, for example, by the late C. S. Lewis in his book The Allegory of Love. The failure to depict adult heterosexual passion on the part of modern Indonesian authors also stands in strange contrast to the frankness and gusto with which the writers of the various branches of traditional Indonesian and Malay litera­ ture dealt with this topic. Indeed it stands in almost as great a contrast with the practice of Peninsular Malay literature today. In Javanese literature, as Pigeaud notes in his history, The Literature of Java, "Poems and tales describing erotic situations are very much in evidence . descriptions of this kind are to be found in almost every important mythic, epic, historical and romantic Javanese text."^ In Sundanese literature, there is not only the open violence of Sang Kuriang's incestuous desires towards his mother (who conceived him through inter­ course with a dog), and a further wide range of openly sexual, indeed often heavily Oedipal stories, but also the crude direct­ ness of the trickster Si-Kabajan tales, which so embarrassed one commentator, Dr.

Following an initial chapter about the history of modern theatre from the late 19th century until the fall of President Suharto in 1998, the four core chapters centre on four different aspects of contemporary Indonesian socio-politics: historical memory and trauma, violence and human rights, environmentalism, and social transition. Each of these chapters is preceded by an introduction about the wider historical and socio-political context of its respective discourse and is followed by an analysis of selected plays. Chapter 2 focuses on historical trauma and memory, and relates the work of two theatre artists, Papermoon Puppet Theatre and Agus Nur Amal (a.k.a. PM Toh), to processes seeking truth and reconciliation in Indonesia in the post-Suharto era. Chapter 3, on violence and human rights, discusses the works of Ratna Sarumpaet and B. The prominent film historian, Misbach Yusa Biran, stated that Darah dan Doa was produced with national consciousness value. The legacy of Darah dan Doa was not only neglecting the role of filmmakers from pre-Independence in Indonesia but also the role of other filmmakers during the 1950s, including Dr. Huyung. Previously, Dr. Huyung (Hinatsu Eitaro /Hŏ Yŏng) came from Korea and became a supporter of Imperial Japan during World War II. After Indonesia gained her independence, Huyung joined Berita Film Indonesia and became a film teacher at the Cine Drama Institute and Kino Drama Atelier. It was there that they then went on to make Frieda (1951), Bunga Rumah Makan (1951, The Flower of the Restaurant), Kenangan Masa (1951, Memories of the Past), and Gadis Olahraga (1951, the Sportswoman). This article discusses 'unity in diversity', a concept in filmmaking that was started by Huyung in 1949. When discussing Darah and Doa as the first film nasional, people forget that the film is driven from the military perspective. Meanwhile, Huyung tried to represent an ethnic minority in Frieda and showing that the ordinary people and the intellectuals also shaped the nation. Based on his experience in the Japanese army and Berita Film Indonesia, Huyung understood that film was very useful in achieving the goals of the state apparatus, due to the cinema's ability to spread nationalism.

Preliminary research was undertaken collaboratively with a team of Asian Australians under my co-direction with Dr Russell Trood and Deborah McNamara. They were asked in 1995-96 to collect relevant material, in English and vernacular languages, from the public sphere in their countries of origin. Three monographs based on this work were published in 1998 by the Centre for the Study of Australia Asia Relations at Griffith University and these, together with one unpublished paper, are extensively cited in Part 2. The researchers were Kwak Ki-Sung, Anne T. Nguyen, Ouyang Yu, and Heidi Powson and Lou Miles. Further research was conducted from 2000 at the National Library with a team of Chinese and Japanese linguists from the Australian National University, under an ARC project, ‘Asian Accounts of Australia’, of which Shun Ikeda and I are Chief Investigators. Its preliminary findings are cited in Part 2. Alison Broinowski iii Abstract This thesis considers the ways in which Australia has been publicly represented in ten Asian societies in the twentieth century. It shows how these representations are at odds with Australian opinion leaders’ assertions about being a multicultural society, with their claims about engagement with Asia, and with their understanding of what is ‘typically’ Australian. It reviews the emergence and development of Asian regionalism in the twentieth century, and considers how Occidentalist strategies have come to be used to exclude and marginalise Australia.

Dalam Faust itu, terdapat cerita dari seorang yang sangat gemar belajar mencari ilmu, sampai dia (Faust) itu tidak lagi mempunyai waktu untuk merasakan kesenangan dunia. Faust seorang yang berharta, tetapi dia tidak senang memelihara perempuan sebagaimana dilakukan orang kebanyakan. Juga plesiran dan lain-lainnya, dia tidak suka. Jadi Faust itu telah merasa bisa hidup dengan senang dengan beberapa ratus buku yang disukainya. Sejak ia masih muda sampai rambut Faust itu berganti warna putih, dia tidak pernah buang-buang waktu barang satu jam pun selain untuk belajar. Sudah barang tentu, semakin lama dia bertambah besar kekayaan. Begitu juga Faust selalu memikirkan hari kematiannya yang musti datang.

Poeze The Netherlands East Indies, the vast Dutch colony, was invaded by the Japanese and occupied with relative ease. The Indies government surrendered on March 8,1942. In the days leading up to the surrender, on orders of the Dutch Governor General, a number of government officials left for Australia. The Dutch government in exile in London—Germany occupied the Netherlands from May 1940—authorized the formation of an Indies government in exile in Australia, named the Netherlands Indies Commission. The commission was inaugurated on April 8, 1942, and was headed by H. J. van Mook. Starting in April 1944, the Raad van Departementshoofden (Commission of Departmental Heads) acted as Van Mook's cabinet. It consisted of six members, with Loekman Djajadiningrat as the sole Indonesian among them. Matters regarding the Dutch and Indonesians in Australia were supervised by Ch. O. van der Plas, who held the rank of Chief Commissioner for Australia and New Zealand and who was undoubtedly the most influential member of the Raad. The Indonesians stranded in Australia beginning in March 1942—mostly seamen and soldiers—cost Van der Plas a lot of time and caused him much worry. Moreover, Indonesia 94 (October 2012) 58 Harry Poeze he was also responsible for the almost forgotten community of political prisoners, interned in Boven Digoel, in the Southeast New Guinea jungle. That part of the Netherlands Indies was all that was left of the Dutch realm.
