In spite of a very good start, Gerard De Rooy, co-driver Moi Torrallardona and the experienced Polish mechanic Rodewald, were forced to stop the truck before the finish line, exactly at the CP2. “We started this morning well motivated – said De Rooy – but unfortunately, after about 100 km, we decided to stop at CP2 because of a mechanical problem.” It was not an easy day for IVECO: Ton Van Genugten, behind the wheel of his #306 Trakker Evolution, finished the stage in 10th position, 51m42s behind the first. After stage 5, the driver is 10th also in the partial general classification. After a gap of two years, this classic rally raid, which has been the stuf of dreams for many a competitor, is back on the international calendar. Since 2013, they have all been looking forward to heading back over the Russian steppes, and then to follow in the footsteps of Marco Polo. With the event starting from Moscow and finishing in Beijing, the competitors will have to cover over 10,000 km at a good pace in order to reach their goal. Team DESSOUDE will obviously be taking part, with three cars entered in the 2016 edition of this new formula ‘Silk Way’. Loza, Chair Drawing from anthropological fieldwork in three jazz clubs, this dissertation explores the global scale of contemporary jazz practice through an examination of the communities that sustain them in Los Angeles, California; Santiago, Chile; and Novosibirsk, Siberia. These spaces, which bear striking similarities to one another both in terms of architectural aesthetics and community practices despite the vast distance between them, are investigated as instantiations of jazz space informed by logics of jazz listening, and as sites of jazz practice—a process that I call jazz anthropology. It argues that to understand why jazz practices continue to manifest anywhere, we must understand what they mean to people elsewhere—that is, beyond the music’s geographical centers of production on the U.S. East Coast. By attending to these peripheries, we can hear the music as a manifestation of jazz consciousness, as tendrils of black radical modes of thinking transposed to far-flung geographies—even ones that very few black people inhabit. To situate these practices in a longer genealogical timespan, the dissertation also includes brief historical ii sketches of jazz practice in each of the three locations in 1917, 1959, and 1990, demonstrating the long local histories that inform the music in each locale.
