The Majilis' party structure remained unchanged, with three parties making it into Parliament: incumbent ruling party Nur Otan (71.09%), the Democratic Party of Kazakhstan Ak Zhol (10.95%) and the People's Party of Kazakhstan (9.10%). The two other parties that ran in the elections failed to pass the 7% threshold, while the National Social Democratic Party (NSDP), considered to be the main opposition, boycotted1 the election completely. Both the EU and the OSCE expressed concern over the validity of the results – citing the lack of fair competition and restriction of media and other freedoms from opposition parties. Of the 98 seats in the Majilis, 76 went to Nur Otan, 12 to Ak Zhol and 10 to the People's Party of Kazakhstan. A further nine deputies to the Majilis were elected by the Assembly of People of Kazakhstan2, chaired for life by Nursultan Nazarbayev, the first President of the Republic (Elbasy). The Government formally resigned following the election, yet so far there has been no major Cabinet reshuffle; 20 of the 22 ministers have been reappointed to their previous roles. Importantly, both Askar Mamin and Nurlan Nigmatullin remain as Prime Minister and Lower House Speaker, respectively. Desertification Kazakhstan has more deserts within its territory than any other Central Asian country, and approximately 66% of the national land is vulnerable to desertification in various degrees. Desertification is expanding under the influence of natural and artificial factors, and some people, called “environmental refugees,” are obliged to leave their settlements due to worsened living environments. In addition, the Government of RK (Republic of Kazakhstan) issued an alarm in the “Environmental Security Concept of the Republic of Kazakhstan 2004-2015” that the crisis of desertification is not only confined to Kazakhstan but could raise problems such as border-crossing emigration caused by the rise of sandstorms as well as the transfer of pollutants to distant locations driven by large air masses. (1) Major factors for desertification Desertification is taking place due to the artificial factors listed below as well as climate, topographic and other natural factors. • Accumulated industrial wastes after extraction of mineral resources and construction of roads, pipelines and other structures • Intensive grazing of livestock (overgrazing) • Lack of farming technology • Regulated runoff to rivers • Destruction of forests 1) Extraction of mineral resources Wastes accumulated after extraction of mineral resources have serious effects on the land. Exploration for oil and natural gas requires vast areas of land reaching as much as 17 million hectares for construction of transportation systems, approximately 10 million hectares of which is reportedly suffering ecosystem degradation. 2) Overgrazing Overgrazing is the abuse of pastures by increasing numbers of livestock. In the grazing lands in mountainous areas for example, the area allocated to each sheep for grazing is 0.5 hectares, compared to the typical grazing space of 2 to 4 hectares per sheep.

After a gap of two years, this classic rally raid, which has been the stuf of dreams for many a competitor, is back on the international calendar. Since 2013, they have all been looking forward to heading back over the Russian steppes, and then to follow in the footsteps of Marco Polo. With the event starting from Moscow and finishing in Beijing, the competitors will have to cover over 10,000 km at a good pace in order to reach their goal. Team DESSOUDE will obviously be taking part, with three cars entered in the 2016 edition of this new formula ‘Silk Way’. Frédéric CHAVIGNY, a regular of the Saint-Lô based team for a number of years, and the team’s local driver, will be back in the cockpit of his Dessoude Atacama Proto along with a brand-new co-driver, Igor MOTKO. Team DESSOUDE will also provide technical assistance for the two Chinese crews of the Eastern Racing Team, which is entering two Dessoude Pathfinder Protos driven by MIAO MA/ MIN LIAO in the #121 and by LEI ZHONG/ZHAOHUI WANG in the #186.
