Antiquaries in the Age of Romanticism: 1789-1851 Rosemary Hill Queen Mary, University of London Submitted for the degree of PhD March 2011 1 I confirm that the work presented in this thesis and submitted for the degree of PhD is my own. Rosemary Hill 2 Abstract The thesis concentrates on the work of fourteen antiquaries active in the period from the French Revolution to the Great Exhibition in England, Scotland and France. I have used a combination of the antiquaries’ published works, which cover, among other subjects, architecture, topography, costume history, Shakespeare and the history of furniture, alongside their private papers to develop an account of that lived engagement with the past which characterised the romantic period. It ends with the growing professionalistion and specialisation of historical studies in the mid-nineteenth century which left little room for the self-generating, essentially romantic antiquarian enterprise. In so far as this subject has been considered at all it has been in the context of what has come to be called ‘the invention of tradition’. It is true that the romantic engagement with history as narrative led to some elaboration of the facts, while the newness of the enterprise laid it open to mistakes. I have not ignored this. The restoration of the Bayeux Tapestry, the forged tartans of the Sobieski Stuarts and the creation of Shakespeare’s Birthplace are all considered. Overall, however, I have been concerned not to debunk but as it were to ‘rebunk’, to see the antiquaries in their historical context and, as far as possible, in their own terms. -

We also have a special event planned on Saturday 9th at the beautiful Savoy Cinema, just around the corner at Heaton Moor. The Savoy is very much like ‘The Bijou’ from The Smallest Show on Earth, (without all the problems!), so we decided to hold a proper Saturday Morning Pictures Show on Saturday 9th October 2021 from 9am-12pm – bring your pop guns and wear your badges! There will be a special guest and a separate Film Quiz with Afternoon Tea in the afternoon from 1-4pm. It will be a smaller event than The Plaza on the Sunday so get your tickets quick! There’s not many seats available at The Savoy. If you have specific seating requests for ANY EVENT, then call us to book your tickets rather than online or on the order form. When booked we will send you a fact sheet on parking and hotels etc. Exciting times – we’ve got some great guests lined up for this year! INFORMATION TO USERS This dissertation was produced from a microfilm copy of the original document. While the most advanced technological means to photograph and reproduce this document have been used, the quality is heavily dependent upon the quality of the original submitted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings or patterns which may appear on this reproduction. 1. The sign or "target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image. You will find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., was part of the material being photographed the photographer followed a definite method in "sectioning" the material. It is customary to begin photoing at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue photoing from left to right in equal sections with a small overlap. If necessary, sectioning is continued again — beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. The majority of users indicate that the textual content is of greatest value, however, a somewhat higher quality reproduction could be made from "photographs" if essential to the understanding of the dissertation. -

John Britton
John Britton - 17 Burton Street, London (1820–1857) John Britton (1771 - 1857), antiquary and topographer, lived at 17 Burton Street (also known as Burton Cottage), a detached house set within enclosed gardens at the south end of the street, between 1820 and 1857. “There is scarcely a thoroughfare in our monster city which has not memorable events, or personages, associated with its name.” – John Britton (resident of Burton Street) 1850 In The autobiography and miscellanea of John Britton, he helpfully provides a 'jocular account' of his house in extensive detail as well as descriptions of Burton Street and his various neighbours. He mentions a small stone circle in his garden, which can be seen surrounding the large tree on the right in the illustration above. Notice of Sale by Auction, Morning Chronicle, 21 February 1820 John Britton was born in Wiltshire [Kington St Michael] and was apprenticed at 16 to a London wine merchant who ran the Jerusalem Tavern at Red Lion Street, Clerkenwell. According to Old and New London (1878): “The house No. 1, at the north-west corner of Red Lion Street, was once the "Jerusalem" Tavern, a great house for sales and parochial meetings. It was here that industrious compiler, Mr. John Britton, was bound apprentice to Mr. Mendham, a wine-merchant, an occupation which nearly killed the young student. In snatches of time stolen from the fuming cellar, Britton used to visit Mr. Essex, a literary dial-painter, who kindly lent him useful books, and introduced him to his future partner in letters, Mr. Edward Brayley, and to Dr. -

Since that time, much effort has been given to improving the conservation, management, and presentation of Stonehenge and its environs. Research has also played an important role with several extensive surveys and selective excavations helping to improve understandings of the site and its setting.
