We also have a special event planned on Saturday 9th at the beautiful Savoy Cinema, just around the corner at Heaton Moor. The Savoy is very much like ‘The Bijou’ from The Smallest Show on Earth, (without all the problems!), so we decided to hold a proper Saturday Morning Pictures Show on Saturday 9th October 2021 from 9am-12pm – bring your pop guns and wear your badges! There will be a special guest and a separate Film Quiz with Afternoon Tea in the afternoon from 1-4pm. It will be a smaller event than The Plaza on the Sunday so get your tickets quick! There’s not many seats available at The Savoy. If you have specific seating requests for ANY EVENT, then call us to book your tickets rather than online or on the order form. When booked we will send you a fact sheet on parking and hotels etc. Exciting times – we’ve got some great guests lined up for this year! Unfortunately, the Letts vault had largely collapsed and had to be stabilised in situ prior to The Cinquevalli rebuilding and reinstating the ledger stone. 75 Years of British Film Production Surveyed in Comprehensive Museum Retrospective

The British series, the most comprehensive of its kind, starts September 7, and continues for the next two months. It includes seven early works of Alfred Hitchcock, in addition to other landmark films from the British studios. Herbert Wilcox is represented by "60 Glorious Years," with Anna Neagle; Victor Saville by "Evergreen;" Carol Reed by "Fallen Idol;" Alexander Korda by "Rembrandt," with Charles Laughton and Elsa Lanchester; Gabriel Pascal by George Bernard Shaw*s "Caesar and Cleopatra;" and Noel Coward by "In Which We Serve." Almost every genre of film is included in the program, which covers the years 1901 to 1966. This survey of British film accomplishments was organized by Margareta Akermark, Associate Director of the Department of Film, who received the close cooperation of Ernest Lindgren, Curator of the National Film Archive, British Film Institute, and Colin Ford, his Deputy Curator. The British archive is providing most of the scheduled films. In acknowledgement of of its assistance. Miss Akermark pointed out that both the National Film Archive and The Museum of Modern Art Film Library were organized within one month of each other in 1935. They were the first film archives to collect and preserve films in any part of the world. -
The Silent Films of Adrian Brunel
Nice Work (if you can get it): The Silent Films of Adrian Brunel Josephine Botting Thesis submitted for the degree of PhD Royal Holloway, University of London January 2017 1 Declaration of Authorship I, Josephine Botting, hereby declare that this thesis and the work presented in it is entirely my own. Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. Signed: Date: 2 Abstract This thesis explores the filmmaking career of Adrian Brunel during the 1920s, concentrating on the period during which his most significant work was undertaken. Brunel has received increasing attention as part of recent reappraisals of British silent cinema and has emerged as a significant figure; the claims made for him in other work on the period will be examined to reach conclusions about the importance of his role and legacy. Drawing on a wealth of primary resources, in particular Brunel’s own personal paper collection housed at the British Film Institute, but also the trade and daily press and other archival film material, this thesis represents a valuable insight into the British film industry during the period 1920 to 1928. Brunel was a proponent of film as an art form and his career outlines his attempts to fulfil his own creative ambitions and the commercial imperatives imposed by the British film industry. This will be achieved by constructing a detailed and comprehensive biography of Brunel’s career complemented by a close analysis of his films and their production histories. As an in-depth study of an individual struggling to sustain a career in the unstable conditions prevailing in the British industry at the time, this thesis contributes to ongoing revisionist work on British silent cinema, both in terms of its workings as an industry and attempts to encourage its development along more artistic lines. -
