Un omaggio che vuole esprimere la rinnovata devozione alla Madonna “del Soccorso”, insieme al ri- cordo del restauro eseguito nella Basilica Vaticana, nell’Anno della Fede 2013, du- rante il pontificato di Papa Francesco. Le vicende di questa immagine, venerata per oltre tredici secoli nella Basilica di San Pietro, rappresentano una eloquente testimonianza di una ininterrotta e cre- scente devozione. Si tratta infatti di un’icona che era già raffigurata in un mosaico del VII secolo sopra l’altare “di San Leone”, presso il transetto meridionale dell’antica Basilica. Nel XIV secolo venne decorata e abbellita con nuovi ornamenti e, poco dopo la metà del secolo successivo, fu sostituita da un nuovo e raffinatissimo af- fresco, che, pur nell’artistica grazia del Quattrocento, riproponeva l’antica figura per conservarne i tratti iconografici e devozionali. Nel 1543, durante i lavori per l’erigenda chiesa rinascimentale, il venerato dipinto fu trasferito nella parte anteriore della vecchia Basilica, presso l’altare dei Santi Processo e Martiniano, a destra della navata centrale. La preziosa reliquia pittorica della Madonna “del Soccorso” venne infine traslata, il 12 febbraio 1578, sull’altare della Cappella Gregoriana con una so- lenne e commovente processione. Fu questa la prima immagine della nuova Basi- lica, che nei secoli successivi si arricchì di numerose altre figure e monumenti: capolavori d’arte di ogni epoca, nati e pensati per trasmettere un coerente messag- gio spirituale. L’inesorabile trascorrere del tempo coprì di polvere e nero fumo la venerata figura della Madonna col Bambino Gesù, tanto che fu più volte necessario rinforzarne i lineamenti con ripetuti interventi pittorici, che, anche se rispettosi, ne alterarono l’aspetto. La paziente opera dei restauratori, che hanno sapientemente rimosso lo sporco e le ridipinture sovrapposte all’opera originaria, ha restituito alla Basilica un’immagine così “diversa” dalla precedente da rendere necessaria questa pubbli- cazione, che vuole evidenziare l’importanza devozionale, storica e artistica della Madonna “del Soccorso” sulla base di fonti archivistiche, letterarie e iconografiche. Ringrazio dunque il benemerito Ordine dei Cavalieri di Colombo per aver sostenuto quest’ulteriore opera di restauro e per la realizzazione di questo libro, che costitui- sce un apprezzato dono alla Basilica dove è sepolto l’Apostolo Pietro, primo papa sempre vivo nella persona del pontefice suo successore nella guida della Chiesa. So as to replace a lost ornament of the fifteenth century, its heart is covered by a new jewel bearing the engraved Marian invocation “MARIA SVCCVRRE NOS” and the name of Pope Francis. This is a tribute that seeks to express renewed devotion to Our Lady of Help, as well as a record of the conservation carried out in the Vatican Basilica in the Year of Faith 2013, during the pontificate of Pope Francis. The story of this image, venerated for over thirteen centuries in the Basilica of Saint Peter, bears eloquent witness to uninterrupted and ever-increasing devotion. Indeed, this is an icon that was already depicted in a mosaic of the seventh century over the altar known as “of Saint Leo”, near the south transept of the Old Basilica. In the fourteenth century it was decorated and embellished with new ornaments, and not long after the middle of the following century, it was replaced by a new and highly refined fresco; notwithstanding its graceful fifteenth-century style, this new image retained the ancient figure as regards iconography and devotion. In 1543, during work for the ongoing building project of the Renaissance church, the venerated painting was moved closer to the front of the Old Basilica, near the altar of Saints Processus and Martinian, on the right of the nave. Finally, the invaluable pictorial relic of the Madonna “del Soccorso” - “Our Lady of Help” - was translated, on February 12, 1578, to the altar of the Gregorian Chapel, accompanied by a solemn and moving procession. It became the first image of the New Basilica, which was to be enriched with so many other figures and monuments over the subsequent centuries: masterpieces of art of every era, conceived and generated so as to convey a consistent spiritual message. The inexorable passage of time covered the venerated figure of the Virgin and Christ Child with dust and soot, and indeed on several occasions it became necessary to strengthen its contours with repeated overpainting, which even if it was always respectful, altered its appearance.

    READINGS: NEO-CLASSICISM Background: Neo-classicism. Term coined in the 1880s to denote the last stage of the Classical tradition in architecture, sculpture, painting and the decorative arts. Neo-classicism was the successor to Rococo in the second half of the 18th century and was itself superseded by various historicist styles in the first half of the 19th century. It formed an integral part of THE ENLIGHTENMENT in its radical questioning of received notions of human endeavour. It was also deeply involved with the emergence of new historical attitudes towards the past -- non-Classical as well as Classical -- that were stimulated by an unprecedented range of archaeological discoveries, extending from southern Italy and the eastern Mediterranean to Egypt and the Near East, during the second half of the 18th century. The new awareness of the plurality of historical styles prompted the search for consciously new and contemporary forms of expression. This concept of modernity set Neo-classicism apart from past revivals of antiquity, to which it was, nevertheless, closely related. Almost paradoxically, the quest for a timeless mode of expression (the 'true style', as it was then called) involved strongly divergent approaches towards design that were strikingly focused on the Greco- Roman debate. On the one hand, there was a commitment to a radical severity of expression, associated with the Platonic Ideal, as well as to such criteria as the functional and the primitive, which were particularly identified with early Greek art and architecture. On the other hand, there were highly innovative exercises in eclecticism, inspired by late Imperial Rome, as well as subsequent periods of stylistic experiment with Mannerism and the Italian Baroque.

INFLUENCES OF THE ANTIQUE IN ESTONIAN MANOR MURALS This article examines the reception and reflection in Estonian manor mu- rals of the impact of the rediscovered antique in the second half of the 18th century and the 19th century in Europe. The extensive excavations of the legacy of ancient Rome in the 18th century influenced the whole visual culture in Europe from Germany to Italy and from England to Scandinavia1, as an indirect source of inspiration and the basis of direct quotation and copying. The current article takes a look at the decorative murals in Estonian manor houses, which are part of this visual geo- graphical circle and contain references to antiquity as a set model. Wall paintings in Estonian manors have not been extensively studied2; they have been seen via individual objects or in a general architectural context. Many unpublished materials are related to conservation-restora- tion reports and are kept in the archives of the National Heritage Board. Di Natale1 SUMMARY The iconography of tuna traps is an essential element for providing better knowledge of this ancient fishing technique. Images from the earliest period are not very common and printed images from the XVI century are extremely rare. Since the publication of a comprehensive review in 2012 (SCRS/2012/036) an earlier engraving has been found. This latest finding is particularly relevant not only because it is the first known printed image of a tuna trap but also because of the artistic importance of its author, Adamo Scultori. This masterpiece engraving was printed in an uncertain date between 1563 and 1565. This paper provides details about this specific engraving as well as its historical and artistic context. RÉSUMÉ L'iconographie des madragues thonières est un élément essentiel pour fournir une meilleure connaissance de cette ancienne technique de pêche. Les images de la toute première période sont peu fréquentes et les impressions du XVIe siècle sont extrêmement rares. Depuis la publication d'une étude exhaustive en 2012 (SCRS/2012/036), une gravure plus ancienne a été découverte. The grotesque is a type of ornamentation often used in painting, sculpture and minor arts, for example in ceramics and tapestries, developed at the end of the 15th century. It owes its name to its singular and ancient origin; after the discovery of these decorations in 1480 in Nero's Domus Aurea, a palace that had been buried for centuries, under the pretext of imitatio antiquitatis, they were re-proposed in contemporary palaces. Nero's palace was visited by many explorers, who descended into it and had the impression of being inside a cave, which is why, as Benvenuto Cellini tells us, these particular decorations rediscovered there were called grotesque. The great success of the grotesques is testified by Raphael's decorations in the Vatican Loggias, in the grotesque room of Palazzo Te in Mantua or in the Grotesque Room of the Castello della Manta in the province of Cuneo. With the end of the Mannerist, the grotesque did not die out as a decorative system, but persisted in the form of an arabesque and later alternated as a decorative system of the chinoiserie.

This consideration serves as the central focus from which the articles inthe collection then move outward along different lines of conceptualization, chronology, cultural relevance, place, and site. They cover a wide spectrum of artistic media, from prints to drawings, from sculptures to gardens, from paintings to stuccos. As they do this, they engage with, and bring together, theoretical perspectives from writ- ersasdiverseasPlatoandPaleotti,VitruviusandVasari,MolanusandMontaigne.
