She was born into a very musical churchgoing family, and this gave her the chance to discover and begin developing her stunning abilities at an early age. She began piano lessons while in elementary school, and played and sang in the church choir, as well as during church services. During her teens she began seriously performing and attending nightclubs, and while she did eventually attend an arts-based high school, she dropped out before graduating to focus on her burgeoning musical exploits. Encouraged by a friend or friends to give the famous career-making Amateur Night at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York City a try (the exact date and circumstances are debated), she sang Body and Soul and won. This led to her coming to the attention of Earl Hines, whose band at the time was a revolutionary group at the forefront of the bebop movement. -

Luciana Souza: Passion and Versatility by Thomas Cunniffe Like Ray Charles, Sarah Vaughan, and Bobby McFerrin, Luciana Souza retains her unique identity regardless of the type of music she sings. Her range is staggering. She is a remarkable improviser with recordings that pair her with the most progressive musicians in jazz today. She is also an exquisite interpreter of pop songs, both classic and contemporary, offering definitive renditions of songs as varied as “Never Let Me Go”, “Waters of March” and “The Very Thought of You”. Her three albums of “Brazilian Duos” introduced great songs from Souza’s native land to American audiences by setting her expressive voice against solo guitar accompaniments by Romero Lubambo, Marco Pereira, Toninho Horta, Guilherme Monteiro, Swami, Jr. and her father, Walter Santos. She is also one of the premier interpreters of the music of the contemporary classical composer Osvaldo Golijov, performing his dramatic and vocally challenging music with orchestras and choruses around the world. She has written her own compositions with original words and music, and has also set the poetry of Elizabeth Bishop, Pablo Neruda and Leonard Cohen to her own melodies. She picks her repertoire carefully, and is meticulous about finding the right tempo and setting to properly transmit a song’s message. Her recording of “All of Me” sounds like a total act of romantic submission, and her setting of Neruda’s “Tonight I Can Write” conveys a feeling of loneliness and release. -

This new, original program is a world premiere presentation that was created in collaboration with the CJO specifically for the Symphony Center Presents Jazz series. The program honors the legacy of the incomparable Sarah Vaughan, a GrammyⓇ award winner, NEA Jazz Master award recipient and one of the most unforgettable voices in jazz. At the concert, Vaughan’s contributions to jazz are also recognized with a special onstage unveiling of the newly issued Sarah Vaughan Forever Stamp by special guest Tangela Bush, Postmaster, Chicago District. Alexander, Callaway and Marie perform some of Vaughan’s most memorable songs including "Misty", "Tenderly", "Key Largo", "How High The Moon, "I Hadn't Anyone 'Til You" and "Until I Met You" among others. -

MEDIA RELEASE August 20, 2013 SEX, GOD & THE WARDROBE - A PANEL DISCUSSION OF FREUD’S LAST SESSION “Things are only simple when you choose not to examine them” – Freud’s Last Session Following the performance of the hit play Freud’s Last Session on Sunday September 1 at 3pm, the audience is invited to stay and hear Dr Rachael Kohn, Peter FitzSimons, Dr Tanveer Ahmed and Roy Williams discuss God, sex and the other simple things of life. Freud’s Last Session centres on legendary psychoanalyst Dr Sigmund Freud (played by Henri Szeps), who invites a young, little-known professor, C.S. Lewis (Douglas Hansell), to his home in London. Lewis, expecting to be hauled over the carpet for satirizing Freud in a recent book, soon realizes Freud has a much more significant agenda. On the day England enters World War II (3 September 1939), Freud and Lewis clash on the existence of God, love, sex and the meaning of life – only a few weeks before Freud chooses to take his own. The Panel Discussion will be moderated by Dr Rachael Kohn, producer and presenter of ABC Radio National’s The Spirit of Things, and the panelists will be: • Peter FitzSimons – journalist, author and atheist • Dr Tanveer Ahmed – psychiatrist and author • Roy Williams – lawyer and author of books including In God They Trust?, a study of the religious beliefs of Australia’s Prime Ministers since 1901. Ella Fitzgerald 1944-1947
Ella Fitzgerald: syllabic choice in scat singing and her timbral syllabic development between 1944 and 1947 By Justin Garrett Binek 2 It is common in jazz discourse to praise Ella Fitzgerald as the greatest vocal improviser in the music’s history – Ella in fact declared herself to be exactly that1 - and this is part of the commonly accepted vocal jazz historical narrative. Improvisational methods praise her ideas as “excellent models for students of vocal jazz”2 and “musically and verbally inventive, filled with the joy of her creativity… represent[ing] the essence and pinnacle of scat singing”3; critical commentaries praise her “perfect balance between a steam enginelike propulsion and an ethereal playfulness”4; and reference books mention Fitzgerald as an exemplar of scat singing in definitions of the term5, using phrases like “It is mostly closely associated by the general public with Ella Fitzgerald and her many imitators.”6 Ella’s influence on other singers is illuminated in Chip Deffaa’s profile from Jazz Veterans: A Portrait Gallery7, written shortly before her death in 1996: “No living singer is more respected by other singers.” Deffaa quotes – among others – Annie Ross (“Like Charlie Parker, Ella can think it and execute it.”8), Jon Hendricks (“Ella’s a one-in-a-lifetime.”9), Anita O’Day (“The first time I heard Ella, in 1937, I said, ‘That is the girl. 1 Friedwald, Jazz Singing: America’s Great Voices from Bessie Smith to Bebop and Beyond, 282. 2 Madura, Getting Started with Vocal Improvisation, 29. 3 Stoloff, Scat!
