Sinatra está resfriado Frank Sinatra, con un vaso de bourbon en una mano y un pitillo en la otra, estaba de pie, en un ángulo oscuro del bar, entre dos rubias atractivas aunque algo pasaditas, sentadas y esperando a que dijera algo. Pero Frank no decía nada. Había estado callado la mayor parte de la noche y ahora, en su club particular de Beverly Hills, parecía aún más distante, con la mirada perdida en el humo y en la penumbra, hacia la gran sala, más allá del bar, donde docenas de jóvenes y parejas estaban acurrucadas alrededor de unas mesitas o se retorcían en el centro del piso al ritmo ensordecedor de una música folk que atronaba desde el estéreo. Sinatra había trabajado en una película que ahora le desagradaba y estaba deseando terminar, harto de toda la publicidad que había rodeado sus encuentros con Mia Farrow, la jovencita de veinte años que esta noche no había aparecido todavía; estaba enfadado porque el documental televisivo sobre su vida, hecho por la CBS, y que se proyectaría dentro de dos semanas, según se murmuraba, se metía con su vida privada e incluso especulaba sobre su posible amistad con jefes de la mafia; y preocupado también por su papel de estrella en un show de la NBC, de una hora de duración, titulado “Sinatra: el hombre y su música”, que le impondría la obligación de cantar dieciocho canciones con una voz que en este preciso momento, unos días antes de que empezara la grabación, estaba débil, dolorida e incierta. -

Those without a URL came from a cassette tape, LP or CD in my personal collection, or from now-defunct YouTube or Grooveshark web pages. I had many of the other recordings in my collection already, but searched for online sources to allow the reader to hear what I heard when writing the book. Naturally, these posted “videos” will disappear over time, although most of them then re- appear six months or a year later with a new URL. If you can’t find an alternate location, send me an e-mail and let me know. In the meantime, I have provided low-level mp3 files of the tracks that are not available or that I have modified in pitch or speed in private listening vaults where they can be heard. Dolls sold over 17 million copies, holding the top position on The New York 2 Times bestseller list for 28 consecutive weeks and remaining in the top ten for 47 more, surpassing Peyton Place in the Guinness Book of World Records as the most commercially 3 popular book of all time. The films rights forThe Love Machine sold for a reported $1.5 million, the largest amount ever paid to a novelist at the time. Once Is Not Enough was published in March 1973 and by May it sat firmly atop the charts. -

FROST WIND ENSEMBLE Message from the Dean On behalf of Robert Carnochan, our gifted students, and my faculty colleagues, we are proud to present our Frost Wind Ensemble to the distinguished and discriminating audience of the Florida Music Educators Conference. Dr. Carnochan has selected a program that reflects the unique values and excellence of the Frost School of Music, where our motto is “Build Yourself”. We encourage students to curate artistry and skill sets that are both deep and broad, in a diverse, un-siloed environment. The Frost School represents the best of time-honored traditions, while preparing graduates for relevant careers in the 21st century. The repertoire for this evening reflects the Frost School’s values. Carlos Simon’s “AMEN!” honors the African American church tradition, while Jennifer Jolley’s “The Eyes of the World Are Upon You” pays homage to the fallen and asks for our better angels to prevail in the wake of tragedy. This evening’s performance is dedicated to all those at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Brad Warnaar’s “New Alliances” is a tour de force composed for our virtuosic Professor Richard Todd, one of the world’s foremost French Horn artists - known for his breathtaking sound, agility, and formidable improvisation skills. Our program closes with a time-tested masterpiece, Hindemith’s monumental Symphony in B-flat. UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles A Lyrical Voice in Hollywood: French Horn Solos in Film, 1954-2012 A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Musical Arts by Erika Wilsen 2021 Ó Copyright by Erika Wilsen 2021 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION A Lyrical Voice in Hollywood: French Horn Solos in Film, 1954-2012 by Erika Wilsen Doctor of Musical Arts University of California, Los Angeles, 2021 Professor Jocelyn Ho, Co-Chair Professor Elisabeth Le Guin, Co-Chair This dissertation examines the French horn solo as a lyrical “voice” in non-diegetic Hol- lywood film music, 1954-2012. Through a series of case studies of longer solos (20+ seconds), I consider the changing use of the horn in film scores to show how horn solos evoke a specific range of emotions including nostalgia, melancholy, and profound loss. I also explore the lyrical horn voice’s function as it extends into shorter, meme-like moments, leitmotif iterations, and horn section work. The research draws on topic theory to place these contemporary emotive associations in historical context (Allanbrook, Hatten, Monelle); recent work on timbral meanings in orchestral music (Fales, van Elferen, Dolan, De Leeuw and De Groot); and a sizeable body of work by film scholars exploring musical narrative and characterization (Gorbman, Chion, Prendergast, ii Wierzbicki, Sbravatti, Lerner). In this way, my research will help create an innovative, cross-sec- tional approach, one suitable to analyzing the critical role of all instrumental solos in non-die- getic film music. iii The dissertation of Erika Wilsen is approved. -
