The KNIGHT REVISION of HORNBOSTEL-SACHS: a new look at musical instrument classification by Roderic C. Knight, Professor of Ethnomusicology Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, © 2015, Rev. 2017 Introduction The year 2015 marks the beginning of the second century for Hornbostel-Sachs, the venerable classification system for musical instruments, created by Erich M. von Hornbostel and Curt Sachs as Systematik der Musikinstrumente in 1914. In addition to pursuing their own interest in the subject, the authors were answering a need for museum scientists and musicologists to accurately identify musical instruments that were being brought to museums from around the globe. As a guiding principle for their classification, they focused on the mechanism by which an instrument sets the air in motion. The idea was not new. The Indian sage Bharata, working nearly 2000 years earlier, in compiling the knowledge of his era on dance, drama and music in the treatise Natyashastra, (ca. 200 C.E.) grouped musical instruments into four great classes, or vadya, based on this very idea: sushira, instruments you blow into; tata, instruments with strings to set the air in motion; avanaddha, instruments with membranes (i.e. drums), and ghana, instruments, usually of metal, that you strike. (This itemization and Bharata’s further discussion of the instruments is in Chapter 28 of the Natyashastra, first translated into English in 1961 by Manomohan Ghosh (Calcutta: The Asiatic Society, v.2). The immediate predecessor of the Systematik was a catalog for a newly-acquired collection at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Brussels. The collection included a large number of instruments from India, and the curator, Victor-Charles Mahillon, familiar with the Indian four-part system, decided to apply it in preparing his catalog, published in 1880 (this is best documented by Nazir Jairazbhoy in Selected Reports in Ethnomusicology – see 1990 in the timeline below). -

Teacher’s Guide Brass ® by Robert W.Getchell, Ph. D. Foreword This manual includes only the information most pertinent to the techniques of teaching and playing the instruments of the brass family. Its principal objective is to be of practical help to the instrumental teacher whose major instrument is not brass. In addition, the contents have purposely been arranged to make the manual serve as a basic text for brass technique courses at the college level. The manual should also help the brass player to understand the technical possibilities and limitations of his instrument. But since it does not pretend to be an exhaustive study, it should be supplemented in this last purpose by additional explanation from the instructor or additional reading by the student. General Characteristics of all Brass Instruments Of the many wind instruments, those comprising the brass family are perhaps the most closely interrelated as regards principles of tone production, embouchure, and acoustical characteristics. A discussion of the characteristics common to all brass instruments should be helpful in clarifying certain points concerning the individual instruments of the brass family to be discussed later. TONE PRODUCTION. The principle of tone production in brass instruments is the lip-reed principle, peculiar to instruments of the brass family, and characterized by the vibration of the lip or lips which sets the sound waves in motion. One might describe the lip or lips as the generator, the tubing of the instrument as the resonator, and the bell of the instrument as the amplifier. EMBOUCHURE. It is imperative that prospective brass players be carefully selected, as perhaps the most important measure of success or failure in a brass player, musicianship notwithstanding, is the degree of flexibility and muscular texture in his lips. -

Building on research already conducted on the topic, the practice-led project assesses the artistic merits of utilising natural horn techniques in performances on the valve horn. The exegesis analyses aesthetic decisions made in the recitals – here disposed as two CD recordings – and assesses the necessity or otherwise of valve horn players developing a command of the natural horn. The first recital comprises a comparison of performances by the candidate of Brahms’ Horn Trio, Op.40 (1865) on the natural and valve horns. The exegesis evaluates the two performances from an aesthetic and technical standpoint. The second recital, while predominantly performed on the valve horn, contains compositions that have been written with elements of natural horn technique taken into consideration. It also contains two pieces commissioned for this project, one by a student composer and the other by a professional horn player. These two commissions are offered as case studies in the incorporation of natural horn techniques into compositional praxis. -

Mr. Mitchell is a founding member of the Art Ensemble of Chicago, the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians and the Trio Space. Additionally, Mr. Mitchell is the founder of the Creative Arts Collective, The Roscoe Mitchell Sextet, The Roscoe Mitchell Quartet, The Roscoe Mitchell Art Ensemble, The Sound Ensemble, The New Chamber Ensemble and the Note Factory. He has recorded over 100 albums and has written hundreds of compositions. His compositions range from classical to contemporary, from passionate and forceful improvisations to ornate orchestral music. His most recent recording, Discussions, was counted among “The 25 Best Classical Music Recordings of 2017” by the New York Times. Also, for five decades, he has designed the Percussion Cage, an elaborate percussion instrument consisting of instruments from around the world, as well as many found instruments. -

Discovering the Lost Race Story: Writing Science Fiction, Writing Temporality This thesis is presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of The University of Western Australia 2008 Karen Peta Hall Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Discipline of English and Cultural Studies School of Social and Cultural Studies ii Abstract Genres are constituted, implicitly and explicitly, through their construction of the past. Genres continually reconstitute themselves, as authors, producers and, most importantly, readers situate texts in relation to one another; each text implies a reader who will locate the text on a spectrum of previously developed generic characteristics. Though science fiction appears to be a genre concerned with the future, I argue that the persistent presence of lost race stories – where the contemporary world and groups of people thought to exist only in the past intersect – in science fiction demonstrates that the past is crucial in the operation of the genre. By tracing the origins and evolution of the lost race story from late nineteenth-century novels through the early twentieth-century American pulp science fiction magazines to novel-length narratives, and narrative series, at the end of the twentieth century, this thesis shows how the consistent presence, and varied uses, of lost race stories in science fiction complicates previous critical narratives of the history and definitions of science fiction. In examining the implicit and explicit aspects of temporality and genre, this thesis works through close readings of exemplar texts as well as historicist, structural and theoretically informed readings. It focuses particularly on women writers, thus extending previous accounts of women’s participation in science fiction and demonstrating that gender inflects constructions of authority, genre and temporality. -

In contrast, the emphasis in this unit is on forms of artistic expression. .Images and music are one component of the culture of surveillance that so infuses our minds and everyday life. The symbolic materials and meanings of culture are social fabrications (though not necessarily social deceptions). They speak to (and may be intended to create or manipulate) needs, aspirations, and fears. Culture communicates meaning and can express (as well as shape) the shared concerns of a given time period and place. Surveillance technology is not simply applied; it is also experienced by agents, subjects, and audiences who define, judge and have feelings about being watched or a watcher. Our ideas and feelings about surveillance are somewhat independent of the technology per se. As with the devil in Spanish literary tradition (image below) the artist can serve to take the lid off of what is hidden, revealing deeper meanings. La A.E.A.T (Asociación Española de Amantes de la Trompa), surge con la idea difundir y promocionar todo lo relacionado con el mundo de la trompa; masterclases, cursos, encuentros, charlas, conferencias, conciertos, etc. Tiene su sede principal en Córdoba, debido a que los emprendedores de este proyecto educativo y musical, tienen su residencia de trabajo en la provincia de Andalucía, en diferentes escuelas, orquestas y conservatorios, dedicándose a este proyecto de forma totalmente altruista. La A.E.A.T, pretende ser la unión de un colectivo de personas, músicos y sobre todo de trompistas, que tienen un denominador común, este denominador común es su pasión por un la trompa; sus antecedentes históricos, su evolución, su literatura musical, el repertorio escrito para ella, los mas importantes interpretes históricos, los trompistas españoles destacados, etc. Este colectivo esta formado, tanto por trompistas profesionales, profesores de diferentes conservatorios y de escuelas de toda España, solistas de orquestas Españolas, estudiantes, etc. Así como por músicos amateurs, músicos aficionados, melómanos, etc. Es por esto que, entre sus premisas fundamentales está el no ser una asociación gremial, en la que solo tengan cabida los profesionales de este instrumento, sino todo lo contrario, el espíritu de este colectivo es acercar al público el instrumento de la trompa. La forma jurídica elegida, para organizar a este colectivo ha sido la de Asociación sin ánimo de lucro, regulada por la Ley Orgánica 1/2002, de 22 de marzo, reguladora del Derecho de Asociación. -
