Apart from being most valuable natural habitat for number of flora and fauna, these lakes and Water bodies are the life line for number of communities of our state. No systematic scientific study for monitoring and planning of these lakes and water bodies was carried out and more than 90%of our lakes and water bodies are till date neglected altogether. The department realized the need of creating the first hand information long back in 1998 and prepared the Directory of lakes and water bodies using Survey of India Topographical Maps on 1:50,000.With the advent of satellite technology the study of these lakes and water bodies has become easier and the task of creating of information pertaining to these lakes and water bodies using latest high resolution data along with Survey of India Topographical Maps and other secondary information available with limited field checks/ground truthing has been carried out to provide latest information regarding the status of these lakes and water bodies.

Executive Summary Jammu & Kashmir experienced one of the worst floods in the past 60 years, during first week of September 2014, due to unprecedented and intense rains. The Jhelum River and its tributaries were in spate and caused extensive flooding in the region. The Decision Support Centre (DSC) of NRSC in collaboration with Department of Environment & Remote Sensing, J&K took necessary action on satellite data acquisition and processing and kept a close watch on the flood situation. All possible data from Indian Remote Sensing (IRS) satellites, as well as foreign satellites, covering Kashmir valley were obtained and analyzed. Rapid flood mapping and monitoring was done on almost daily basis and the flood inundation information was prepared. In addition, cumulative flood inundation, flood progression and recession maps were also prepared. Flood inundation simulation study was done using CARTO-DEM for Jhelum River to identify the possible flood affected areas and the same was uploaded on Bhuvan portal.

Degree College Kupwara, J&K, India 2Department of Environmental Sciences, University of Pune, Maharashtra, India 3Centre of Biodiversity Studies BGSB University Rajouri, J&K, India *Corresponding author email: [email protected] ABSTRACT Belonging to family Ranunculaceae the genus Ranunculus comprises ca. 600 species with a worldwide distribution. The generic delimitation and infrageneric classification of Ranunculus have always proved a “Pandora Box” for taxonomists due to its large number of species and high phenotypic plasticity and, therefore, continue to be under discussion. The Kashmir Himalaya, constituting a part of the Northwest Himalaya, represents a repository of the Ranunculus species. During the course of present study 25 taxa of Ranunculus, belonging to 18 species were recorded from the study area in diverse habitats. The paper highlights the position of the genus at world level in general and at the regional level in particular. In order to remove certain taxonomic confusions some new combinations have been proposed. Keywords: Ranunculus, Kashmir Himalaya, species INTRODUCTION The genus Ranunculus was first described by Carl Linnaeus in 1753. The Latin name meaning 'little frog' points to the wet habitats in which most of the species grow. It comprises plants commonly known as 'buttercups' for their bowl-shaped flowers with petals having glossy proximal and mat distal portions (Kadota, 1991), although epithets such as 'spearworts', 'water crowfoots' and 'lesser celandine' are also used for other species of the genus.

It is regarded to be taxonomically a difficult genus due its large number of species (ca. 1000) and their polymorphism. It exhibits tremendous diversity in morphology, habitat, and ecological preferences. The genus shows abundance and great diversity in the Kashmir Himalaya, occurring mostly in riparian habitats and other moist situations. A critical revision of this genus is required to understand the recognizable characters so as to help identifying its constituent taxa easily and accurately. In this paper, an attempt has been made to arrive at a comprehensive taxonomic treatment of Impatiens in Kashmir Himalaya. A taxonomic account of 10 species of Impatiens in the Kashmir Himalaya has been provided. Updated nomenclature, with basionym and synonym(s) (if any), description, altitudinal range, and distribution pattern of all the taxa in the study area is given.
