APPENDIX A: Celebrating Authors of Color and Their Works of Literature 1 Equity in Literacy The celebration of authors of color and their works of literature is an important way to emphasize and pay tribute As students read about and to authors who have, and continue to, provide insight into the learn that people of color are struggles, triumphs, challenges, and successes that are a part an integral and important of daily living for people of color in America. part of the very fiber of our Literature provides a personal and intimate instrument by country, another step toward which to learn about the rich culture of people along with the eradication of racism in their major roles in the world and the history of our country. America can be made. An important factor in developing and supporting a life-long love of reading is ensuring that all children see themselves in literature that reflects their lives and the world’s diversity. As students read about and learn that people of color are an integral and important part of the very fiber of our country, another step toward the eradication of racism in America can be made. The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) is committed to helping educators become aware of and familiar with literature by authors of color and literature that provides an accurate account of the experiences of people of color. Authors of Color – A Living List of Literature MDE’s Authors of Color – A Living List of Literature list will grow and expand as it is updated on an ongoing basis. -

In order to develop a good understanding of what comics are and their origins, this work starts by giving the reader a quick historical overview of the genre and its predecessor, sequential art. The reader will learn not only about the roots of comic illustration design but also its modern influences. The paper will refer to major names in the industry, and well as identify important historical events, both of which helped steer comics into the direction they are today. Additionally, descriptions of the main elements of comics will be provided. The last chapter will supply a number of examples in the utilizations of comic design components that include story, characters, panels and text by different artists who helped shape the craft of comics, and hopefully this will inspire the reader as well as provoke them to start viewing comics in a different, or perhaps even more positive light. -

It focuses on four major ethnic groups: African Americans, Asian Americans, Latino Americans, and Native Americans. Within each category a distinction is made between those works with an authentic voice and those with a realistic voice. An authentic voice is an author or illustrator who is from the particular ethnic group and brings expertise and life experience to his/her writings or illustrations. A realistic voice is that of an author or illustrator whose work is from outside that experience, but with valuable observations. An asterisk notes the distinction. No distinction is drawn between juvenile literature and adult literature. The decision is left to the reader to make the choices, because some adult literature may contain selections appropriate to children. The Illustration Game: Quotes and Notes Jaleen Grove The Illustration Game, published in Communication Arts magazine, is an artwork that critically evaluates and satirizes the illustration industry 1959-2019. It conceives of the time period in the form of a board game in which players roll a die to advance along a path, accumulating points or losing them according to typical events of each decade. The path winds through a forest of quotations that were said in print at the time or shortly after by leading illustrators and critics. For the quotations to read properly and succinctly, wording was very slightly modified in some cases. The sources and the quotes without modification are given here for those who wish to see context and origin. This document only discusses the quotations that appear in the black background. -

Typography, Illustration and Narration in Three Novels by Alasdair Gray

Craig Linwood Bachelor of Arts (Honours) School of Humanities Arts, Education and Law Griffith University Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy February 2017 Abstract. The impetus of the thesis emerged through an academic interest in how experimental uses of typography and illustration functioned as a method of narration within literature. This was followed by investigations into the use of typography and illustration yielded that while there is a growing field of literary study examining non-linguistic elements within narratives, there are few studies into typography and illustration and how an author utilises and develops them as a method of narration. In light of this, this thesis examines attempts to expand upon the act of narration through the use of typography and illustration in both experimental and common forms. This is focused through Scottish artist Alasdair Gray and three of his novels: Lanark: A Life in Four Books, 1982, Janine and Poor Things. While Gray’s novels are contemporary his use of typography and illustration engages in wider print cultures that facilitated experiment into literature involving the manipulation of typography, illustration and the traditions of narrative. Experimentation in literature from 1650 to 1990, be it through illustration, typography or the composition of narrative, often emerged when printing practice and its product were no longer seen as efficient at communicating to modernising audiences. This act often coincided with larger changes within print cultures that affected laws, politics, the means of distribution, views of design i and methods of distribution. -

With the availability of affordable books in the 18th century, due to the introduction of new mechanization, individuals had the ability to improve their lives and widen their worlds. In the 19th century, writers of fiction began to specialize in literature for children. In the 20th century, books for children, with beautiful, colorful illustrations, became a common gift for children. The relatively rapid progression from moralistic small pamphlets on cheap paper with crude woodcuts to the world of Berenstain Bears, colorful Golden Books, and the tongue-twisters of Dr. Seuss is an intriguing social change. The story of how a storybook moves from an idea to the bookstore shelf is equally fascinating. Combining the history of children’s literature with how a storybook is created inspired me to write and illustrate my own children’s book, ―OH NO, MORE SNOW!‖ i ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The Schreyer Honors College,
