One bridge (a stone arch type) carried Fagleysville Road over Swamp Creek; the other bridge (an iron Pratt thru truss type) carried Gerloff Road over Swamp Creek. It appears that during the nomination process, data was confused and the form for the Gerloff Road Bridge misidentifies the bridge as being located in Upper Frederick Township. The bridge location is actually within Lower Frederick Township. The three semental arches of this bridge each span 20 feet and, like many stone bridges built during this time, are flanked by long approach walls which make the bridge much longer than its arch spans. A plaque on the bridge documents its construction date as 1854. When viewed in elevation, the arch spans are differentiated from the body of the bridge by a small built-in recession. This stylistic variation describes a rectangle from the exterior of one arch ring, across both arch crowns to the exterior of the other arch ring; the projection of the rest of the bridge thus highlights this arched section. This feature appears to be peculiar to Montgomery County; there are five stone arch bridges built like this in that county. There are ten stone bridges included in this nomination which were built in Montgomery County. As a group,these bridges are an excellent illustration of the continuing tradition in stone masonry bridge construction in Pennsylvania. Construction dates for these bridges range from 1789 to 1910. Boundary Description: The nominated property consists of a 125 feet long by 25 feet wide rectangle whose vertices coincide with the outside corners of the bridge's wing walls, and includes only bridge superstructure and substructure. Register of Historic Places Stephanie Toothman, Keeper National Park Service National Register of Historic Places National Park Service, US Department of Interior 1201 "I" (Eye) Street, NW, 8th Floor Washington D.C. 20005 Re: Bridge in Upper Frederick Township, Montgomery County PA; 64000726 Dear Ms Toothman: It was recently brought to our attention that a bridge listed in the National Register on June 22, 1988, as part of the Highway Bridges Owned by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Transportation Thematic Resources effort, was misidentified with the wrong municipality. The PA SHPO requests that the municipality where this resource is located be changed to "Lower Frederick Township," and that the name of the resource be changed and clarified to "Gerloff Road Bridge Crossing Swamp Creek." As we were investigating this error, we noticed that a second bridge was listed with the identical name; we are requesting that the second bridge's name be clarified as "Fagleysville Road Bridge Crossing Swamp Creek." We are requesting that the Keeper's Office accept the Additional Documentation enclosed offering these Technical Corrections. Prior documentation for each bridge is included if clarification is necessary.
