WOOD UST INSIDE THE FRONT DOOR of the Rolf and Joyce Wunder home in Richfield is a three­ foot-tall clay model for a sculp­ ture group titled A Bay Playing Jwith Kittens, a work produced at the Copenhagen Academy of Fine Arts in 1881 by a young Norwegian artist named Jakob Fjelde. The sculpture is by no means the Twin Cities' only permanent monument to the talents of this distinguished art­ ist. Jakob Fjelde left us the statues of Ole Bull in Loring Park, of Hiawatha and Minne­ haha near Minnehaha Falls, and of Minerva at the Minne­ apolis Public Library-all of which he created during the nine years he lived in Minneap­ olis after immigrating here in 1887. And he left us a bust of Henrik Ibsen, which he'd created in Norway and which stood in Como Park until it was stolen a few years ago. Furthermore, the Minnesota Historical Society, Augsburg College, and The Minneapolis Institute of Arts have Fjelde busts in their collections. A statue of Henrik Ibsen that once stood in Como Park.     Chapter 6 EXISTING CONDITIONS The existing conditions and recent alterations in the Town of Pullman and the factory sites have been addressed well in other documents. The Pullman Historic District Reconnaissance Survey completed in 2013 offers clear and succinct assessments of extant buildings in Pullman. Likewise, the Archaeological Overview & Assessment completed in 2017 covers the current conditions of factory remnants. A draft revised National Historic Landmark nomination for Pullman Historic District, completed in August 1997 and on deposit at Pullman National Monument, includes a list of contributing and non-contributing structures.612 For the purposes of this Historic Resources Report, the existing conditions of built environment cultural resources that are not addressed in the aforementioned documents will be considered briefly for their potential significance for research and interpretation. In addition, this section will consider historical documents valuable for studying change over time in the extant built environment and also strategies for using Pullman’s incredibly rich built environment as primary historical evidence. Figure 6.1 offers a visual map showing the approximate age of extant buildings as well as major buildings missing today that were present on the 1892 Rascher Map. Most obvious from this map are the significant changes in the industrial core. Importantly, many of the 1880s buildings that no longer stand were replaced gradually over the twentieth century at first as part of the Pullman Company’s changing technological needs, then after 1959 as part of deindustrialization and the reinvention of the Calumet region. The vast majority of domestic structures from the Town of Pullman’s original construction survive.

Led by Garrison Keillor, the group headed to the new bronze sculpture of writer F. Scott Fitzgerald waiting to be dedicated on the centennial of his birth. Krouk Doctor of Philosophy in Scandinavian University of California, Berkeley Professor Mark Sandberg, Chair This study examines selections from the work of three modernist writers who also supported Norwegian fascism and the Nazi occupation of Norway: Knut Hamsun (1859- 1952), winner of the 1920 Nobel Prize; Rolf Jacobsen (1907-1994), Norway’s major modernist poet; and Åsmund Sveen (1910-1963), a fascinating but forgotten expressionist figure. In literary studies, the connection between fascism and modernism is often associated with writers such as Ezra Pound or Filippo Marinetti. I look to a new national context and some less familiar figures to think through this international issue. Employing critical models from both literary and historical scholarship in modernist and fascist studies, I examine the unique and troubling intersection of aesthetics and politics presented by each figure. After establishing a conceptual framework in the first chapter, “Unsettling Modernity,” I devote a separate chapter to each author. Analyzing both literary publications and lesser-known documents, I describe how Hamsun’s early modernist fiction carnivalizes literary realism and bourgeois liberalism; how Sveen’s mystical and queer erotic vitalism overlapped with aspects of fascist discourse; and how Jacobsen imagined fascism as way to overcome modernity’s culture of nihilism.
