Making her cabaret debut, Malone will salute 14 of her favorite Broadway actresses who have been an influence on her during her musical theatre career. The audience will hear selections made famous by Fanny Brice, Carol Burnett, Betty Buckley, Carol Channing, Judy Holliday, Angela Lansbury, Patti LuPone, Mary Martin, Ethel Merman, Liza Minnelli, Bernadette Peters, Barbra Streisand, Elaine Stritch, and Nancy Walker. On making her cabaret debut: “The idea of putting together an original cabaret act where you’re standing on stage for ninety minutes straight has always sounded daunting to me,” Malone said. “I’ve had the idea for this particular cabaret format for a few years. I felt the time was right to challenge myself, and I couldn’t be more proud to debut this cabaret on the very stage that offered me my first musical theatre experience as a nine-year-old in the Moonlight’s very first musical Oliver! directed by Kathy Brombacher.” Malone can relate to the fact that the leading ladies she has chosen to celebrate are all attached to iconic comedic roles. “I learned at a very young age that getting laughs is golden,” she said. -

Famous New Yorker Jonathan Larson As a playwright, Jonathan Larson could not have written a more dramatic climax than the real, tragic climax of his own story, one of the greatest success stories in modern American theater history. Larson was born in White Plains, Westchester County, on February 4, 1960. He sang in his school choir, played tuba in the band, and was a lead actor in his high school theater company. With a scholarship to Adelphi University, he learned musical composition. After earning a Fine Arts degree, Larson had to wait tables, like many a struggling artist, to pay his share of the rent in a poor New York City apartment while honing his craft. In the 1980s and 1990s, Larson worked in nearly every entertainment medium possible. He won early recognition for co-writing the award-winning cabaret show Saved!, but his rock opera Superbia, inspired by The original Broadway Rent poster George Orwell’s novel 1984, was never fully staged in Larson’s lifetime. Scaling down his ambitions, he performed a one-man show called tick, tick … BOOM! in small “Off -Broadway” theaters. In between major projects, Larson composed music for children’s TV shows, videotapes and storybook cassette tapes. In 1989, playwright Billy Aronson invited Larson to compose the music for a rock opera inspired by La Bohème, a classical opera about hard-living struggling artists in 19th century Paris. Aronson wanted to tell a similar story in modern New York City. His idea literally struck Larson close to home. Drawing on his experiences as a struggling musician, as well as many friends’ struggles with the AIDS virus, Larson wanted to do all the writing himself. -

Wilkommen John Kander (1927 – Present) From Cabaret Based off of the 1951 play by queer playwright John Van Druten, Cabaret was written and premiered in 1966 by John Kander, Fred Ebb, and Joe Masteroff. The play by Van Druten, titled I Am a Camera, was inspired by the 1939 novel by Christopher Isherwood, Goodbye to Berlin. This novel is important in the inception of Cabaret as well as I Am a Camera, as it gives the plot, the conflict, and the characters used throughout the play and the musical. -

In opera, music is the primary element, supported by the set and costumes. The set and costumes provide a visual interpretation of the music. In film, music and sound play a supporting role. Music and sound create an ambiance in films that aid in telling the story. I consider the musical to be an equal and reciprocal balance of music and vision. More importantly, a successful musical is defined by its plot, music, and visual elements, and how well they are integrated. Observing the transformation of the musical and analyzing many different genres of concert music, I realize that each new concept of transformation always blends traditional and contemporary elements, no matter how advanced the concept is or was at the time. Through my analysis of three musicals, I shed more light on where this ii transformation may be heading and what tradition may be replaced by a new concept, and vice versa. -

Purpose and History The Community Band of Brevard exists to educate its members, to entertain its audiences, and to serve its community. Our musical director is Mr. Marion Scott. Mr. Scott formed the Band in 1985 to provide a performance outlet for adult musicians in the area. Our membership, currently numbering about 80, includes people of all ages representing many occupations. Most of our concerts have a specific theme upon which the music focuses. Those themes have often led us to include exceedingly difficult works, which we willingly do, and to include special guest artists. The Band gives several concerts throughout the year. Our concerts include many diverse musical genres, composers, and often previously unpublished works for band. Each program is planned to please a variety of musical tastes. Performances of the new adaptation of Herman Melville’s classic novel begin Tuesday, December 3 at the Loeb Drama Center in Cambridge, MA. The production opens officially on Wednesday, December 11, 2019 and closes Sunday, January 12, 2020. “We are all in the belly of the whale…” From the creative team behind A.R.T.’s 2015 production of Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 comes an epic musical adaptation of Herman Melville’s iconic American novel. As the egomaniacal Captain Ahab drives his crew across the seas in pursuit of the great white whale, Melville’s nineteenth-century vision of America collides head-on with the present. “I’ve always been fascinated with the surprising ways classic literature can resonate with contemporary times, and Moby-Dick is no exception,” says Malloy. “Melville was writing about America in 1851, as the country was struggling to define itself and reconcile all the conflicts that led inevitably to the Civil War; 170 years later, we’re still talking about the same issues— capitalism, democracy, environmentalism, race. -

Catalogue of Photographs of Performers and Shows in the Archives of the Embassy Theatre Foundation The archives of the Embassy Theatre Foundation hold more than 3000 artifacts, including more than 600 photographs of vaudevillians inscribed to Bud Berger (long-time stage man- ager at the Embassy Theatre, known as the Emboyd until 1952); more than 300 posters, playbills, programs, stools, and even guitars signed by the stars and casts of shows that have played at the Embassy Theatre over the past forty years, rang- ing from classic and current Broadway shows to acrobatic groups, choral ensembles, dance shows, ballet, stand-up comedians, rock bands, country singers, travel films, silent films, theatre organists, and so on; and hundreds of publicity photographs of performers, shows, and events at the theatre, primarily from the period following the establishment of the Embassy Theatre Foundation and its rescue of the theatre from the wrecking ball in 1975; and a nearly complete run of the journal of the American Theatre Organ Society. The archive is now almost fully catalogued and preserved in archival housing. Earlier excerpts from the catalogue (available on the Archives page of the Embassy Theatre’s web site) cover the photographs inscribed to Bud Berger and the posters, playbills, programs, stools, and so on from later shows at the Embassy. This is the third excerpt, covering the public- ity photographs of the last forty-five years and a few photographs of earlier events, Bud Berger, and other members of the stage crew. The publicity photographs are primarily of individ- ual performers, but a few shows are presented as well, including Ain’t Misbehavin’, Annie, Barnum, Bubbling Brown Sugar, Cabaret, California Suite, Cats, A Christ- mas Carol, Dancin’, Evita, Gypsy, I'm Getting My Act Together And Taking It On The Road, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Peter Pan, Same Time Next Year, Side by Side by Sondheim, and Ziegfeld: A Night at the Follies.
