  • Resilience at the Border: Traditional Botanical Knowledge Among Macedonians and Albanians Living in Gollobordo, Eastern Albania
Pieroni et al. Journal of Ethnobiology and Ethnomedicine 2014, 10:31 http://www.ethnobiomed.com/content/10/1/31 JOURNAL OF ETHNOBIOLOGY AND ETHNOMEDICINE RESEARCH Open Access Resilience at the border: traditional botanical knowledge among Macedonians and Albanians living in Gollobordo, Eastern Albania Andrea Pieroni1*, Kevin Cianfaglione2, Anely Nedelcheva3, Avni Hajdari4, Behxhet Mustafa4 and Cassandra L Quave5,6 Abstract Background: Ethnobotany in South-Eastern Europe is gaining the interest of several scholars and stakeholders, since it is increasingly considered a key point for the re-evaluation of local bio-cultural heritage. The region of Gollobordo, located in Eastern Albania and bordering the Republic of Macedonia, is of particular interest for conducting ethnobiological studies, since it remained relatively isolated for the larger part of the 20th Century and is traditionally inhabited by a majority of ethnic Macedonians and a minority of Albanians (nowadays both sharing the Muslim faith). Methods: An ethnobotanical survey focused on local food, medicinal, and veterinary plant uses was conducted with 58 participants using open and semi-structured interviews and via participant observation. Results: We recorded and identified 115 taxa of vascular plants, which are locally used for food, medicinal, and veterinary purposes (representing 268 total plant reports). The Macedonian Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) was greater than the Albanian TEK, especially in the herbal and ritual domains. This phenomenon may be linked to the long socio-cultural and linguistic isolation of this group during the time when the borders between Albania and the former Yugoslavia were completely closed. Moreover, the unusual current food utilisation of cooked potatoes leaves, still in use nowadays among Macedonians, could represent the side effect of an extreme adaptation that locals underwent over the past century when the introduction of the potato crop made new strategies available for establishing stable settlements around the highest pastures.

At the same time, a growing appreciation of regional issues has raised interest in regional differences in each of these countries. This volume of the “Portrait of the Regions” series responds to this need and follows on in a tradition which has seen four volumes devoted to the current Member States, a fifth to Hungary, a sixth volume dedicated to the Czech Republic and Poland, a seventh to the Slovak Republic and the most recent volume covering the Baltic States, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Examining the 12 statistical regions of Slovenia, this ninth volume in the series has an almost identical structure to Volume 8, itself very similar to earlier publications.

Quave3,4* ABSTRACT Local natural resources play an important role in securing human health in the Balkans, particularly as a source of food and medicine. The aims of this study were to document the ethnomedical practices of Slavic speaking groups in South Kosovo and to compare these findings to other studies conducted in the Western Balkans. Field research was conducted over a series of trips in 2014. Semistructured interviews in which respondents were asked to list local taxa used for food and/or medicine were conducted in six communities located in the municipalities of Prizren and Dragash. Prior informed consent was obtained and 91 people were interviewed. Voucher specimens of cited wild flora and fungi were collected and deposited in duplicate at the herbaria of the University of Prishtina (Kosovo) and Emory University (USA). A total of 1,050 use citations were recorded for the various uses of 119 species (4 fungi and 115 plants) for food and/or medicine. Additionally, the ethnomedical uses of 27 ingredients of animal, mineral or industrial origin were also documented. The greatest number of citations were for dermatological and food uses of local plants. The most common families reported were Rosaceae (18 species cited), Lamiaceae (16) and Asteraceae (10). Informant consensus regarding category of use was highest (Fic ≥ 0.85) for the categories of oral health, dermatological, and otolaryngological applications.

Albanians An ethnobotanical field study was carried out during late summer 2016 among Muslim Albanians, Christian Aromanians Orthodox Aromanians and Christian Orthodox Macedonians living in six isolated villages of Eastern and SE Macedonians Albania, as well as in one nearby village located in SW Macedonia. The field survey was conducted via semi- Ethnobotany structured interviews by asking 32 local, mainly elderly informants, who retain traditional ethnobotanical Ethnobiology knowledge (TEK) regarding traditional utilizations of wild food plants, medicinal plants (both wild and cultivated), mushrooms, plants used as a dye, and other home-made remedies pertaining to both human and animal health. Fifty-two botanical and fungal folk taxa and twenty-four other domestic remedies were recorded; approx. one-fifth of the total reports have not been previously recorded in Albania and the SW Balkans. Among these findings, the uncommon medicinal uses of Clematis, Verbascum, and Fraxinus spp. deserve phytopharma- cological investigations. The most cited taxa were commonly used by all investigated communities, suggesting that the bulk of the Eastern and SE Albanian ethnobotanical knowledge is retained by all locals, beyond linguistic and religious affiliations.

The current ethnobotanical field study was conducted among the last remaining Albanians inhabiting the upper Reka Valley at the base of Mount Korab in the Mavrovo National Park of the Republic of Macedonia. The aims of the study were threefold: 1) to document local knowledge pertaining to plants; 2) to compare these findings with those of an ethnographic account written one century ago and focused on the same territory; and 3) to compare these findings with those of similar field studies previously conducted in other areas of the Balkans. Methods: Field research was conducted with all inhabitants of the last four inhabited villages of the upper Reka Valley (n=17).

Appropriate development change of Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK), and environmental educational frameworks should which has broad-sweeping implications for future aim to reconnect local people to the perception of biodiversity conservation efforts.

  • Victor A. FRIEDMAN ALBANIAN in the BALKAN LINGUISTIC LEAGUE
STUDIA ALBANICA 2005/1 Victor A. FRIEDMAN ALBANIAN IN THE BALKAN LINGUISTIC LEAGUE: A RECONSIDERATION OF THEORETICAL IMPLICATIONS. It is a fundamental principle of Albanian dialectology that the Geg/Tosk split represents the oldest and most significant dialectological division in the transition from Common Albanian to Albanian as it is historically attested. It is likewise a common place that Geg is the less “Balkanized” of the two dialects. On the one hand, the preservation of a distinct optative mood, the remnants of the ablative and, dialectally, the locative, and the complex expression of possessives are pan-Albanian features that are in contrast to general Balkan developments. On the other hand, for example, while classic Balkanisms such as the conditional based on the future-in-the-past, the postposed definite article (which Hamp 1982 argues was already in place during the period of contact with Latin), the analytic comparative, the expression of teens by means of ‘on ten’ (which Hamp 1992:918 connects to pre-Slavic/pre-Albanian areal contact, which would have had to have been in northern Europe given the pan-Slavic but non-Baltic nature of the construction), the development of an analytic subjunctive, and also the use of ‘one’ as an indefinite marker (see Friedman 2003), are pan-Albanian Balkanisms. The Geg infinitive in me + short participle (vs the Tosk lack of such a construction) and the future using kam ‘have’ + infinitive (vs the Tosk use of a particle derived from ‘will’ + subjunctive) are among the distinctions most commonly cited as non-Balkan characteristics of Geg. A closer look at the details of Geg dialectology, however, reveals a more complex picture of areal features and contact-induced phenomena.
