Abstract: Sphingolipids are complex lipids widespread in nature as structural components of biomembranes. Commonly, the sphingolipids of marine organisms differ from those of terres- trial animals and plants. The gangliosides are the most complex sphingolipids characteristic of vertebrates that have been found in only the Echinodermata (echinoderms) phylum of invertebrates. Sphingolipids of the representatives of the Asteroidea and Holothuroidea classes are the most studied among all echinoderms. In this review, we have summarized the data on sphingolipids of these two classes of marine invertebrates over the past two decades. Recently established structures, properties, and peculiarities of biogenesis of ceramides, cerebrosides, and gangliosides from starfishes and holothurians are discussed. The purpose of this review is to provide the most complete informa- tion on the chemical structures, structural features, and biological activities of sphingolipids of the Asteroidea and Holothuroidea classes. -

38 SPC Beche-de-mer Information Bulletin #34 – May 2014 Parastichopus regalis — The main host of Carapus acus in temperate waters of the Mediterranean Sea and northeastern Atlantic Ocean Mercedes González-Wangüemert1,*, Camilla Maggi2, Sara Valente1, Jose Martínez-Garrido1 and Nuno Vasco Rodrigues3 Abstract Pearlfish, Carapus acus, live in association with several species of sea cucumbers. Its occurrence in hosts is largely dependent on host availability and its distribution from potential larval areas. The occurrence of Carapus acus in six sea cucumbers species from the Mediterranean Sea and northeastern Atlantic Ocean was assessed. The sea cucumber species Parastichopus regalis was the only host detected. Pearlfish from southeastern Spain (21 individuals) ranged in length from 7.0 cm to 21.5 cm. Two sea cucumbers from the area around Valencia harboured two adult fish each. These pairs of pearlfish, which were sampled during the summer, were able to breed inside of P. regalis, an event already noted by other authors. Pearlfish do not seem to choose their host according its size, as the correlation between fish length and host weight was not significant. Introduction Carapus acus (Brünnich, 1768) is a species recorded throughout the Mediterranean Sea and the Symbiosis, the close relationship between west coast of North Africa in depths of 1–150 m organisms of different species, can occur in (Nielsen et al. 1999). It is common in the western the marine environment and, in relation to the Mediterranean Sea, mainly around Italy, Spain and species involved, can take place in various forms, France, and also occurs in the Adriatic and Aegean such as mutualism, commensalism or parasitism seas. -

SUMMARY: The reproductive biology of the sea cucumber Holothuria sanctori was studied over 24 months (February 2009 to January 2011) at Gran Canaria through the gonad index and a combination of macro- and microscopic analysis of the gonads. Holothuria sanctori showed a 1:1 sex ratio and a seasonal reproductive cycle with a summer spawning: the mean gonad index showed a maximum (3.99±0.02) in summer (June-July) and a minimum (0.05±0.04) between late autumn (November) and early spring (March). Females had significantly wider gonad tubules than males. First maturity occurred at a size of 201 to 210 mm, a gutted body weight of 101 to 110 g and a total weight of 176 to 200 g. Holothuria sanctori shows a typical temperate species reproduction pattern. These results could be useful for managing current extractions of H. sanctori in the Mediterranean and in case a specific fishery is started in the eastern Atlantic region. SPC Beche-de-mer Information Bulletin #39 – March 2019 27 Contribution to the knowledge of holothurian biodiversity at Reunion Island: Two previously unrecorded dendrochirotid sea cucumbers species (Echinodermata: Holothuroidea) Philippe Bourjon1* and Jean-Pascal Quod2 Introduction A comprehensive knowledge of biodiversity at the local scale is needed to design management and conser- vation strategies, and to adapt regional management plans to population connectivity as well as to formulate biogeographic hypotheses. This information is all the more important when the biology and distribution of species are poorly known, as is the case with many sea cucumbers. Consequently, reliable field observa- tions accompanied by photographic evidences and information on location and habitat can allow experts to better understand spatial patterns, and infer distributions using ecological niche modelling (Michonneau and Paulay 2015). Moreover, these data, even if not enabling precise identification of previously unrecorded species, allow the inclusion of these species in the research programme of future inventory missions. This article is written with that in mind. The most recent inventory of holothurians at Reunion Island includes 39 species (Conand et al. 2018) belong- ing to four orders (Holothuriida, Synallactida, Apodida, Dendrochirotida) and five families (Holothuriidae, Stichopodidae, Chiridotidae, Synaptidae, Sclerodactylidae).
