CLEMENTS, Sandia National Laboratories System emulation and firmware re-hosting have become popular techniques to answer various security and performance related questions, such as, does a firmware contain security vulnerabilities or meet timing requirements when run on a specific hardware platform. While this motivation for emulation and binary analysis has previously been explored and reported, starting to either work or research in the field is difficult. To this end, we provide a comprehensive guide for the practitioner or system emulation researcher. We layout common challenges faced during firmware re-hosting, explaining successive steps and surveying common tools used to overcome these challenges. We provide classification techniques on five different axes, including emulator methods, system type, fidelity, emulator purpose, and control. These classifications and comparison criteria enable the practitioner to determine the appropriate tool for emulation. We use our classifications to categorize popular works in the field and present 28 common challenges faced when creating, emulating and analyzing a system, from obtaining firmwares to post emulation analysis.     Adding 32-bit Mode to the ACL2 Model of the x86 ISA Alessandro Coglio Shilpi Goel Kestrel Technology LLC, Palo Alto, CA (USA) Centaur Technology, Inc., Austin, TX (USA) [email protected] [email protected] The ACL2 model of the x86 Instruction Set Architecture was built for the 64-bit mode of operation of the processor. This paper reports on our work to extend the model with support for 32-bit mode, recounting the salient aspects of this activity and identifying the ones that required the most work. 1 Motivation and Contributions A formal model of the ISA (Instruction Set Architecture) of the pervasive x86 processor family can be used to clarify and disambiguate its informal documentation [15], as well as support the verification and formal analysis of existing binary programs (including malware), the verified compilation of higher-level languages to machine code, the synthesis of correct-by-construction binary programs from specifications, and the verification that micro-architectures correctly implement the ISA. Furthermore, if the model is efficiently executable, it can be used as a high-assurance simulator, e.g. as a test oracle. The ACL2 model of the x86 ISA [1, :doc x86isa] [11] is one such model. It includes a substantial number of instructions and has been used to verify several non-trivial binary programs. Its fast execution has enabled its validation against actual x86 processors on a large number of tests. Prior to the work described in this paper, the model supported the simulation and analysis of 64- bit software only (which includes modern operating systems and applications), and was used to verify several 64-bit programs.
