Doc. 8.50 CONVENTION ON INTERNATIONAL TRADE IN ENDANGERED SPECIES OF WILD FAUNA AND FLORA ____________ Eighth Meeting of the Conference of the Parties Kyoto (Japan), 2 to 13 March 1992 Interpretation and Implementation of the Convention CRITERIA FOR AMENDMENTS TO THE APPENDICES (The Kyoto Criteria) This document is submitted by Botswana, Malawi, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Background The attached draft resolution is intended to replace the existing criteria for listing species in the appendices of the Convention, for transferring species between the appendices and for deletion of species from the appendices. In addition, it incorporates and consolidates the provisions of various other Resolutions relevant to this topic and provides a basis for their removal from the list of Resolutions of the Convention. Since the Berne Criteria (Resolutions Conf. 1.1 and 1.2) have formed the basis for amendments to the appendices of the Convention since 1976, it is necessary to provide substantial justification for their replacement. General issues International trade 1. CITES was established to address international trade in wild fauna and flora. It is unable to influence the survival of species which are not exploited for trade or species which are exploited within States for domestic consumption. Perhaps the greatest threat to species is the loss or fragmentation of habitats in the countries where they occur: this problem has to be addressed through other measures. International trade may be one of the less important factors influencing the survival of the majority of species and this should be recognized. CITES is an international conservation treaty with a circumscribed role limited to those species which are genuinely threatened with extinction, or which could become so, in which there is significant international trade. -

Ledeganckstraat 35, B-9000 Gent, Belgium ABSTRACT: A cage exclusion experiment was used to examine the interaction between the eplbenthos (permanent and vls~tlng)and the macroinfauna of a high intertidal Kenyan Avicennia marina man- grove sediment. Densities of Ollgochaeta (families Tubificidae and Enchytraeidae), Amphipoda, Insecta larvae, Polychaeta and macro-Nematoda, and a broad range of environmental factors were fol- lowed over 5 mo of caging. A significant increase of amphipod and insect larvae densities in the cages indicated a positive exclusion effect, while no such effect was observed for oligochaetes (Tubificidae in particular), polychaetes or macronematodes. Resource competitive interactions were a plausible expla- nation for the status of the amphipod community. This was supported by the parallel positive exclusion effect detected for microalgal densities. It is therelore hypothesized that competition for microalgae and deposited food sources is the determining structuring force exerted by the epibenthos on the macrobenthic infauna. Box 139109, Jeddah 21323, Saudi Arabia Abstract: The increased occurrences of diabetes have led to the utilization of the curative plants in search of the best remedies. The usage of medicinal plants has been embraced worldwide since it is a critical part of the public healthcare. Rhizophora mucronata and Avicenna marina are vulnerable plants that require protection for their continued significance in the cure of diabetes. The two plants have proved to be antiviral and antibacterial in nature. Traditionally, the Rhizophora mucronata and Avicenna marina were utilized to cure diabetes. Although there is tremendous progress in the diabetes cure through the oral hypoglycemic compounds, there is a consistent search for the newer medicines. Mostly these mangrove trees have antidiabetic activity despite the fact that they have not been accepted. However, the traditional medicine system has used such plants with success. This review showed some of the previous data on the Rhizophora mucronata and Avicenna marina that were tested on the rats in medical laboratories. McLarty Name and degree of faculty chair: Daniel Gonzalez-Socoloske, Ph.D. Date completed: April 2017 In this study, the reliability of low cost side-scan sonar to accurately identify soft substrates such as grass and mud was tested. Benthic substrates can be hard to classify from the surface, necessitating an alternative survey approach. A total area of 11.5 km2 was surveyed with the sonar in a large, brackish mangrove lagoon system. Individual points were ground-truthed for comparison with the sonar recordings to provide a measure of accuracy. -

Herzog and Kirsten Jensen Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, and the Biodiversity Institute, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas, USA Abstract: A new lecanicephalidean genus is erected for cestodes previously recognised as “New Genus 12” (Polypocephalidae) in a phylogenetic analysis of the interrelationship of members of this order. Examination of the cestode fauna of the mangrove whipray, Urogymnus granulatus (Macleay) (Myliobatiformes: Dasyatidae) from the Solomon Islands and northern Australia revealed the existence of specimens representing two new species, consistent in morphology with “New Genus 12.” Corollapex gen. n. is unique among the 24 valid lecanicephalidean genera in its possession of an apical organ in the form of an external retractable central disk surrounded by eight concave muscular, membrane-bound pads and an internal heterogeneous glandular component. The two new spe- cies described herein, Corollapex cairae sp. n. (type species) and Corollapex tingoi sp. n., differ from one another in overall size and number of mature and immature proglottids, and are noted to demonstrate a differential distribution between mature and juvenile host individuals. Additional species diversity in the new genus, beyond C. cairae sp. n., C. tingoi sp. n., and “New Genus 12 n. sp. 1” of Jensen et al. (2016) is suggested. Corollapex gen. n. appears to be restricted to dasyatid hosts in the Indo-West Pacific region. -

Abstract Background: DNA barcoding, i.e. the use of a 648 bp section of the mitochondrial gene cytochrome c oxidase I, has recently been promoted as useful for the rapid identification and discovery of species. Its success is dependent either on the strength of the claim that interspecific variation exceeds intraspecific variation by one order of magnitude, thus establishing a "barcoding gap", or on the reciprocal monophyly of species. Results: We present an analysis of intra- and interspecific variation in the butterfly family Lycaenidae which includes a well-sampled clade (genus Agrodiaetus) with a peculiar characteristic: most of its members are karyologically differentiated from each other which facilitates the recognition of species as reproductively isolated units even in allopatric populations. -
