CKS NEWSLETTER Fall 2008 Center for Korean Studies, University of California, Berkeley Message from the Chair Dear Friends of CKS, Colleagues and Students: As we look forward to the thirtieth anniversary of the Center for Korean Studies (CKS) in 2009, we welcome our friends, colleagues, visiting scholars, and students to a year of new programs that we have scheduled for 2008–2009. In addition to continuing with the regular programs of past years, we began this year with the conference “Places at the Table,” an in-depth exploration of Asian women artists with a strong focus on Korean art. We presented a conference on “Reunification: Building Permanent Peace in Korea” (October 10) and a screening of the documentary film “Koryo Saram” (October 24). “Strong Voices,” a forum on Korean and American women poets, is scheduled for April 1–5, 2009. We are in the early planning stages for a dialogue on Korean poetry between Professor Robert Hass of UC Berkeley and Professor David McCann of Harvard, in conjunction with performances of Korean pansori and gayageum (September 2009). Providing that funding is approved by the Korea Foundation, an international conference on Korean Peninsula security issues (organized by Professor Hong Yung Lee) is also planned for next year. The list of colloquium speakers, conferences, seminars, and special events is now available on the CKS website. (See page 2 for the fall and spring schedule.) We welcome novelist Kyung Ran Jo as our third Daesan Foundation Writer-in-Residence. Ms Jo, whose novels have won many awards, will give lectures and share her writing with the campus community through December of this year. -

Kim Leng East Asia: Origins to 1800 Spring 2019 Curriculum Project Sijo: Korean Poetry Form Rationale: This unit will introduce students to the sijo, a Korean poetic form, that predates the haiku. This popular poetic form has been written in Korea since the Choson dynasty (1392-1910). The three line poem is part of Korea’s rich cultural and literary heritage. Modern literature after the 1960s in Korea 25 DOI: 10.1515/ijas-2016-0002 Research Note SANGGUM LI PUSAN NATIONAL UNIVERSITY Modern Literature after the 1960s in Korea Abstract (English): Since the beginning of the 1990s in Korea, the category and definition of new generation literature have become the topic of heated debate. One may understand this tendency as ‘generation severance’, ‘alienation between social classes’, or the ‘consumption- oriented culture of the masses’. Here, we call the literary youth born in approximately 1960 ‘the new generation’. In literature, the new generation refers to the appearance of a new culture and way of thinking. This generation passed their childhood in the 1970s and faced no such great difficulties as their parents combating poverty. However, they grew up under the indirect influence of a dark political outlook and suppression. Generally, they have a great affection for the culture produced by mass media. If we compare their development process with the literary stream in Korea, the 1960s could be defined as the era of literature for independence and strong self-awareness, the 1970s as the era for people, the 1980s as the era for the rights or emancipation of labour, and the 1990s as the era of new generation literature. Meanwhile, the appearance of the ‘Korean Wave’, or so-called ‘Hallyu’, has become one of the most beloved popular cultural phenomena both in Asia and in other countries since the late 1990s. Korea’s Literary Tradition Bruce Fulton Introduction monks and the Shilla warrior youth known as hwarang. religions Article The Unificationist Funerary Tradition Lukas Pokorny Department of Religious Studies, University of Vienna, 1010 Vienna, Austria; [email protected] Received: 22 April 2020; Accepted: 17 May 2020; Published: 20 May 2020 Abstract: This paper explores the distinctive funerary tradition of the Unification Movement, a globally active South Korean new religious movement founded in 1954. Its funerary tradition centres on the so-called Seonghwa (formerly Seunghwa) Ceremony, which was introduced in January 1984. The paper traces the doctrinal context and the origin narrative before delineating the ceremony itself in its Korean expression, including its preparatory and follow-up stages, as well as its short-lived adaptation for non-members. Notably, with more and more first-generation adherents passing away—most visibly in respect to the leadership culminating in the Seonghwa Ceremony of the founder himself in 2012—the funerary tradition has become an increasingly conspicuous property of the Unificationist lifeworld. This paper adds to a largely uncharted area in the study of East Asian new religious movements, namely the examination of their distinctive deathscapes, as spelled out in theory and practice. Thoughts on Korean Poetry in Translation an Sonjae
Translating Korean-ness: Thoughts on Korean Poetry in Translation An Sonjae (Brother Anthony) A paper presented at an International Comparative Literature Symposium held in Keimyung University, Daegu, on May 27, 2016. The essential “Koreanness” of Korean poetry is also its most certainly untranslateable feature. What gets lost in translation is, inevitably, its specifically “Korean” quality, much more than any abstract “poetic” quality it might have. This is at the most superficial level quite obvious. Korean poetry is (almost by definition) written in Korean language. Translated Korean poetry is not. When poetry originally written in Korean is translated into English, it loses one primary aspect of its Korean identity, its Korean language. Whatever is considered “poetic” about the original poem by its original readers is thereby strongly compromised, indeed it is utterly “lost in translation.” It is not so easy to say in what sense a Korean poem, once it has been translated into English, is still a “Korean poem.” In indealistic terms, of course, a poem is a poem universally, it has no national identity. But Koreans are intensely aware of national identity issues, perhaps precisely because Korean identity is so hard to define. At the immediate level, it is not only the vocabulary and the grammar which have changed in the process of translation; no matter how hard the version may strive to be “conservative” or “faithful,” almost always there will have been radical changes in the sequence of words and phrases in the attempt to create a “poem” in the target language, to say nothing of rhythms and sounds. -

Sijo, a three-line verse form written to be performed in a musical setting, emerged in the latter part of the Koryŏ dynasty (918-1392), flourished through the Chosŏn dynasty (1392-1910), and has transformed itself into contemporary forms. First, we will situate sijo within the larger context of traditional East Asian poetic tradition, and then explore its unique structural and thematic properties through the lens of the language, religion and culture of Korea. Lastly, we will analyze the historical backgrounds of modified sasŏl sijo of the 18th century and modern sijo of the 20th century, and uncover cultural and linguistic implications of sijo translation and the current popularity of sijo in North America. The course consists of three units: Unit 1 "Poetry in Traditional East Asia" introduces traditional East Asian verse forms that have influenced Korean vernacular poetry such as hyangga, Koryŏ sogyo, sijo and kasa, and chronicles the rise of sijo as a distinctive genre in Korean literature; Unit 2 "The Structure of Sijo" focuses on the linguistic structure of sijo in its variant forms (p’yŏngsijo, ŏssijo and sasŏl sijo) and the interface between literature and music; and Unit 3 "Thematic and Prosodic Expansion" deals with the development of sijo and its resilience to absorb a wide range of themes, poetic devices and metrical qualities both in historical and contemporary settings.
