This popular poetic form has been written in Korea since the Choson dynasty (1392-1910). The three line poem is part of Korea’s rich cultural and literary heritage. Modern literature after the 1960s in Korea 25 DOI: 10.1515/ijas-2016-0002 Research Note SANGGUM LI PUSAN NATIONAL UNIVERSITY Modern Literature after the 1960s in Korea Abstract (English): Since the beginning of the 1990s in Korea, the category and definition of new generation literature have become the topic of heated debate. One may understand this tendency as ‘generation severance’, ‘alienation between social classes’, or the ‘consumption- oriented culture of the masses’. Here, we call the literary youth born in approximately 1960 ‘the new generation’. In literature, the new generation refers to the appearance of a new culture and way of thinking. This generation passed their childhood in the 1970s and faced no such great difficulties as their parents combating poverty. However, they grew up under the indirect influence of a dark political outlook and suppression. Generally, they have a great affection for the culture produced by mass media. If we compare their development process with the literary stream in Korea, the 1960s could be defined as the era of literature for independence and strong self-awareness, the 1970s as the era for people, the 1980s as the era for the rights or emancipation of labour, and the 1990s as the era of new generation literature. Meanwhile, the appearance of the ‘Korean Wave’, or so-called ‘Hallyu’, has become one of the most beloved popular cultural phenomena both in Asia and in other countries since the late 1990s. Korea’s Literary Tradition Bruce Fulton Introduction monks and the Shilla warrior youth known as hwarang. Corresponding to Chinese Tang poetry Korean literature reflects Korean culture, itself and Sanskrit poetry, they have both religious and a blend of a native tradition originating in Siberia; folk overtones. Rain or shine, however, the preparations for AKSE activities continue. On 21 August, 2008 the Fifth Korean Studies Convention for Graduate Students in Europe will begin, this year to be held in Leiden. Originally this was not an AKSE activity, the graduate students themselves taking charge of the entire organisation together with local teachers. This will not radically change, but AKSE will every year at the end of July include a request for funding of the convention of the following year to the Korea Foundation in its request for other activities and when necessary encourage graduate students to organise a convention. This will facilitate the work of the graduate students who are organising next year’s conference and promote continuity. Preparations are also under way for the 2009 AKSE Biennial Conference in Leiden. -

chapter 12 The Problem of China in the Study of the History of Korean Science: Korean Science, Chinese Science, and East Asian Science* Because of the Chinese origin of many ideas and artifacts of traditional Korean science, and the overwhelming Chinese influence on its development, the his- tory of Korean science suffers from a kind of identity crisis, based on the issue of whether traditional Korean science should be considered simply a part of Chinese science. Jeon Sang-woon, for example, begins his account of tradi- tional Korean science by referring to its history as “a tributary of the main- stream of scientific developments in traditional China.”1 But Jeon quickly adds that Koreans did not merely adopt ideas and techniques from China, but modi- fied them and adapted them to their own needs and conditions. This led to many ‘independent’ developments of Korean science, and often to new discov- eries and inventions. Much of the previous work – and indeed most of the early works by modern scholars – on traditional Korean science have focused on the new contributions by Koreans and their differences from the Chinese developments.2 Yet this raises a problem, which has been troubling me when I attempt to think in general terms about the history of traditional Korean science. The problem, which I call “the problem of China in the study of the history of Korean science,” is basically about the significance of the scientific ideas and technical artifacts from China that are apparently pervasive throughout tradi- tional Korean science and technology.3 What roles and meanings should be assigned to such ideas and techniques in the history of Korean science? 01:574:111 The History of the Korean Script and Calligraphy II (2 credits) Class time: Wed. 6:10-8:10 pm Classroom: Hardenbergh Hall B4 (HH-B4) Prerequisites: 01:574:110 The History of the Korean Script and Calligraphy I Professor Hyobin Kwon Office Hour: 5:00-5:30pm & by appointment (e-mail: [email protected]) Course Description As a continuation to Korean 111, the course will further explore the history and characteristics of Hangul, the indigenous morphophonemic writing system from its invention in the 15th century throughout the history of Korea. It will provide more practice in a variety of Hangul writing styles in brush and pen writing (e.g. old Panbon style and Palace style with regular and cursive forms for brush writing). In addition, "Literary painting(Painting with literary themes). One of the main themes of the genre is "Sagunja (Four noble ones)" that consist of plum blossoms, orchid, bamboo and chrysanthemum. Students will learn brush stroke techniques, composition, and essential skills and will develop an understanding of aesthetics of Korean calligraphy and Korean brush painting and its role in traditional Korean culture. Assessment: Students will be evaluated based on the midterm and calligraphy productions.
