Post: The Worm, 7, London Land Cotages, Church Road, Wormingford, CO6 3AE. Email: [email protected] Our Essex & Gliding Club’s annual event took place recently over a weekend of glorious sunshine. The undoubted highlight of the event was the arrival on Saturday morning, from Duxford, of the ’Catalina Flying Boat’. This magnificent aircraft, built by Consolidated Aircraft in 1943, was one of the most widely used seaplanes in the second World War. The PBY was jocularly described as the slowest combat aircraft of the war! But it was a sturdy, reliable aircraft, ideally suited for long patrols over the oceans.

Once again an excellent display of both “Wings & Wheels” by the E&SGC, resulting in a very generous donation to their elected charity, Essex Air Ambulance. It just needs to firmly anchor the runner into the pot and stop the pot being dislodged if it is windy. Both the parent plant and the new runner may need watering if the weather is dry. After a few weeks the new plant will have rooted into the pot. It can then be cut off from the parent plant and be replanted where desired. Again if conditions are dry it will be helpful to keep it watered particularly until it is well established.

Notes of the WPC meeting held on Thursday 13th June 2019. Tim Hearne was co-opted onto the Council bringing Councillor numbers up to six out of a maximum of seven. We will continue to seek a further recruit to fill the outstanding vacancy (anyone interested should contact the Clerk at the address shown below). Cllr Nigel Chapman addressed the meeting and informed us that the revised Borough Council Local Plan will be available for consultation during the summer period. The Council reviewed the Asset Register which was outstanding from the last meeting and now includes the new bus shelter. It was interesting to note that the new shelter cost £12,591 (including installation), this cost has been fully borne by Essex County Council. One new planning application had been received and updates given on five ongoing applications. Details of these applications can be found on the Colchester Borough Council Online Planning Web Page. A further discussion took place regarding the possi- bility of using the old telephone box at the Church Road junction as a location for the installation of a defibril- lator. Quotations to be obtained to re-establish a power supply, modify the phone box and purchase and install the defibrillator. A request had also been received to use the telephone box as a free library. It was decided to review this request once a decision had been made whether this is a viable site for a de- fibrillator. The Recreation Trust representatives reported that there have been several instances of vandalism around the play- ground and village hall area. Please note that the next meeting will take place at the Village Hall on Thursday 11th July 2019 at 7.00pm Please email any comments or views to the Parish Clerk at [email protected]. Further informaton and the latest draf minutes and past copies of the Worm can be found at htp://www.essexinfo.net/wormingfordpc/

John’s Journal The view from the Vicar’s study

Stand and stare

Well, I’m not in my study today - I'm on a train in a new comfortable carriage with WiFi, charging points and the occasional drinks trolley, whilst the countryside flies past at 100mph.

Well, it doesn't of course - it's me and the train doing 100mph. And in just the last few seconds I have passed a farmer on a tractor, a quaint village, a Church steeple and a new housing estate. Strangely, I think I want to be there, to find out more, know the people and hear their stories - but I presume I never will, nor those of the many more villages we've passed whilst I'm typing this! Well, I don't really want to be there; I realise I'm missing our own lovely villages and villagers already! Which got me thinking - why do I rush between them so much? I tell myself I want to make the most of my time in each place, but when I do it leaves me less time for travel, so I need to rush. Yet recalling William Henry Davies’ words, ‘What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare’, in these quiet moments I wonder whether I have the balance wrong. On the train, I can’t remember the next line of the poem, but one word which also would have rhymed is prayer. I am reminded that Jesus left the house very early in the morning for a solitary place, and prayed (Mark 1:35); after leaving a large crowd, he went alone to a hillside and prayed (Matthew 14:23); and often spent the night outside, praying (Luke 6:12). If we ‘stand and stare’ it certainly quietens our minds and fills our vision and spirits with the beauty of creation; add prayer and we gain a sense of thankfulness for all that surrounds us. That includes the countryside, but also our own homes and especially the people who are part of our lives. So here’s what I just did. Whilst staring blankly out of the window, I imagined all the lovely people and places in my life moving slowly past me. I found myself thanking God for them and enjoying the experience – and then I kept think- ing about the things I need to do in each of those situations. But that was not a diversion - I found that those tasks had gained a new perspective. Well, I thought I’d pass that on to you, for what it’s worth. Think about it; pray about it; then think about & pray for all those lovely people in your life. Yours in the love of Jesus

Colchester carers speak up for fostering in Foster Care Fortnight

A Clacton foster family that has cared for over a dozen vulnerable children over 25 years is calling for more older peo- ple, or families whose children have left the nest, to consider answering Essex County Council’s call for more foster families.

They are the latest couple to support Essex County Council’s drive to find 100 new foster carers. It launched its campaign during Foster Care Fortnight, the annual awareness event run by UK charity the Fostering Network. Essex County Council is staging information events where foster carers like Darren and Karen will be pre- sent to speak to anyone who is interested in finding out more information.

For the last 25 years, Darren and Karen Harman-Page have cared for foster chil- dren through the council’s Fostering Service, which is seeing the number of children requiring a home growing steadily.

“It’s incredibly rewarding to know you’re making a huge difference to chil- dren’s lives,” Darren said. “Even though they’re not your children, you do grow to love them as your children and give them everything they need in a safe, non-judgemental home. “We have a large family but that doesn’t stop us going to London to see a show or to the beach,” Darren said. “You build them up gradually and you build trust gradually. Some might have witnessed domestic violence or abuse. Others may think there wasn’t a problem before. You have to be sensitive to their changing needs.”

“Vulnerable children desperately need you. Please contact our friendly team to answer any concerns you may have.”

To talk to people like the Harman-Pages and find out about some of the children you could help, call 0800 801 530, visit www.essexadoptionandfostering.co.uk/fostering or attend a Drop-In Fostering Information Event on Saturday 22 June, 11am to 1pm or Saturday 28 September 11am to 1pm at the Holiday Inn, Colchester, CO6 3QL Summer Crime Prevention Advice

During the summer months we see a rise in the number of “Creeper Burglaries” where burglars take advantage of open gates, windows and doors. An open or insecure garden gate will provide the thief with access to the back of your home. If you have unoccupied rooms that are accessible to others from outside or off flat roofs make sure the windows are closed, if you need ventilation in these rooms whilst at home at least lock the larger window and only have the small window open even during the daytime. If you only have bigger windows consider a lockable window restrictor and a small alarm sensor on the window to detect entry. Leave any accessible door open or insecure and an opportunist thief will pop in and anything lying around will be gone. You may have only popped next door, or down the end of the garden or having a quick show- er; it only takes a second for a thief to steal. Tips for a crime free summer: Parked cars – Don’t leave property on display in the car. Are the windows shut and doors locked (don’t assume that by pressing the button on the remote it is locked, try the handle too)? A lot of thefts are from insecure cars and vans. Don’t attract a thief with visible insecure and unattended pedal cycles. Keep side or rear gates, sheds and garages shut and securely locked. Doors closed and locked? Don’t forget that with a PVCu multi-locking door you may have lifted the handle but until you turn the key or thumb turn on the inside you have not locked all the locks in place. Before going out or turning in for the night don’t forget to check all doors, someone may have closed it but did they lock it? Windows - lift the blinds or open the curtains and check they are closed, the sun may have been on the TV when it was hot, and so the curtains were drawn with the window open. Remember the above advice about open windows. Make sure in case of fire that keys to windows and doors are readily accessible to occupants but not in view of possible burglars. If you have an intruder alarm activate it when going out and activate the zone for the unoccupied area whilst in. Car keys - don’t take them to bed with you, where possible leave them in noisy drawer/location. Keep the keyless fob in a “Faraday” bag. If you do hear a suspicious noise in the house that you are not happy with dial 999 and make a noise, shout out, it could cause any intruder to flee, they may not have known you were home, re- member your life is more important than your property. If safe to do so get a good description of the person/s and if possible the car index number and direction of travel. Stopping for lunch, a drink or a cuppa whilst out, soaking up the sun, or going down to the sea, don’t drop your guard. If you don’t pay attention to your camera, mobile phone, sunglasses, purse or wallet and a thief sees them they will steal them. Social Media – When using “Facebook” or other social media be wary of announcing to the world that you are away and your house is empty. Make sure your profile does not contain private information that would identify you or your address to a stranger.

Last bit of advice - Going on holiday? Cancel the milk and newspaper deliveries and look after each other, get a neighbour or friend to keep an eye on your property, ensure neighbours have contact numbers for a key holder and where possible let them park their car on your drive. To make your home less attrac- tive to the thief create the illusion that your house is occupied (TV simulator, lights and radio on timers, a doorbell that you can answer from your mobile phone) it is less likely to be broken into.
