Its time parameters – 1853-71 – are the period of the provincial administration control of migration into New Zealand. The key research questions of this study are: Who migrated to New Zealand during this period and how did the migration affect their life chances? What were the social and economic effects of this migration, particularly on the poorer local families? How did these effects compare with other parish assisted migration in eastern England? Stoke by Nayland in 1851 appears to have been a relatively settled farming community dominated by a few wealthy landowners so emigrants were motivated more by the ‘pull’ of the areas they were moving to than by being ‘pushed’ by high levels of unhappiness ‘at home’.

The intention is not simply to describe changes in the work of Constable but to suggest a framework for the study of changes in the work of any artist and to facilitate discussion among conservators, conservation scientists, curators, and art historians. The paper considers, first, examples of physical changes in the paintings themselves; second, changes in the physical conditions under which Constable's paintings have been viewed. Both the Boxford Society and the YourBoxford groups submitted well thought out and professional objections to this site for affordable housing, based on existing regulations. Unfortunately none of our concerns were discussed nor were we able to put questions on the planning application to the Parish Council. It is a sad day when concerned residents who are anxious to work with the Councillors for the best outcome for villagers who are to be rehomed in Boxford, have been dismissed There were two residents who spoke in favour of the site, stating they were concerned their children would not be able to live in the village in the future. Recent excavation, immediatelyon the north side of Bricett Priory church,had revealedthe base of an apsidal chapel, as the Hon. General Sec. explained therein ; the most interesting and primitive structure of this little-restored fabric was pointed out ; and the very curious Trans.-Normansouth doorway,which is beautiful and 71 by 3/ feet broad though badly weathered before the modern porch was erected. Some account was offered of both Wattisham and Bildeston churches in situ, the latter of which proved of much interest in its inaccessibleparvis, once the local prison, whereto Members aicended by means of an improvised ladder from the nave ; St. Leonards Chapel, in that erstwhilemarket-town, was glanced at ; and a newly discoveredcruciferouscoffin-lid,ofsome fourteenth-century ecclesiasticin Semer graveyard, examined. At Lindsey Castle the earthworks were scaled to the grass-grown keep, where Mr. Redstone expatiated upon the connectionof this .fortress with the powerfulDe Cokefeldfamily and its descent to the eventual heiress Nesta, who founded Kersey Priory.     SERVANTS’ PASSAGE: Cultural identity in the architecture of service in British and American country houses 1740-1890 2 Volumes Volume 1 of 2 Aimée L Keithan PhD University of York Archaeology March 2020 Abstract Country house domestic service is a ubiquitous phenomenon in eighteenth and nineteenth century Britain and America. Whilst shared architectural and social traditions between the two countries are widely accepted, distinctive cultural identity in servant architecture remains unexplored. This thesis proposes that previously unacknowledged cultural differences between British and American domestic service can be used to rewrite narratives and re-evaluate the significance of servant spaces. It uses the service architecture itself as primary source material, relying on buildings archaeology methodologies to read the physical structures in order to determine phasing. Archival sources are mined for evidence of individuals and household structure, which is then mapped onto the architecture, putting people into their spaces over time. Spatial analysis techniques are employed to reveal a more complex service story, in both British and American houses and within Anglo-American relations. Diverse spatial relationships, building types and circulation channels highlight formerly unrecognised service system variances stemming from unique cultural experiences in areas like race, gender and class. Acknowledging the more nuanced relationship between British and American domestic service restores the cultural identity of country house servants whose lives were not only shaped by, but who themselves helped shape the architecture they inhabited. Additionally, challenging accepted narratives by re-evaluating domestic service stories provides a solid foundation for a more inclusive country house heritage in both nations. This provides new factors on which to value modern use of servant spaces in historic house museums, expanding understanding of their relevance to modern society.
