EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AND LEADER DEVELOPMENT: MEASURING TRAIT EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE SCORES OF MID-CAREER COMMISSIONED U.S. ARMY OFFICERS A Dissertation Presented to The Faculty of the Educational Leadership Doctoral Program Western Kentucky University Bowling Green, Kentucky In Partial Fulfillment Of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Education By LTC Stephan Walters May 2018 PREFACE This study embraces the following five ideologies: (1) adaptive leadership requires both cognitive (thinking) and affective (emotional) physiological capabilities; (2) organizations that develop leaders are able to determine program effectiveness via psychometric instruments which measure individualized growth in leader attributes (what a leader is) and leadership competencies (what a leader does); (3) organizations such as the U.S. Army, that are developing adaptive leaders, require psychometric feedback instruments that inform both the cognitive and the affective domains of adaptive growth; (4) the purpose of leadership is to influence other humans, and regardless of context or setting, all humans (leaders, followers, peers, the opposition) have emotions; (5) the foundation of leader development is self-awareness, and self-report (self-efficacy) emotional intelligence instruments (and various other psychometric measurements) could provide the U.S. Army a means to both inform and shape leader identity. The overarching purpose of this study was to help all leaders throughout the U.S. Army determine if current leader development practices and instruments adequately provide individualized feedback on the leadership traits required for the organization’s sustained success. This research could influence decisions about future leader development practices (Ways) and instruments (Means), while helping the U.S. Army achieve the strategic goals (Ends) related to developing adaptive and self-aware leaders who are open to the constant changes of the modern operational environment. DAVIDSON, 2020 ii Abstract This dissertation documents personality psychology’s development alongside psychoanalysis and eugenics, offering a disciplinary and cultural history of personality across the twentieth century. Using the psychological concepts of neurosis and introversion as an organizational framework, personality’s history is portrayed as one of “success:” a succession of hereditarianism and its politics of normativity; a successful demarcation of the science of personality from competing forms of expertise; and a successful cleansing of personality psychology’s interchanges with unethical researchers and research. Chapter 1 provides background for the dissertation, especially focusing on turn-of-the- century developments in the nascent fields of American psychology and the importation of psychoanalytic ideas. It ends with a look at Francis Galton’s eugenicist and statistical contributions that carved a key path for psychological testers to discipline psychoanalytic concepts. Part I details the rise of personality testing in the USA during the interwar years, while also considering the many sexual and gender norms at play. Chapter 2 tracks the varied places in the 1920s that personality tests were developed: from wartime military camps to university laboratories to the offices of corporate advertisers. Chapter 3 takes stock of popular psychoanalytic notions of personality alongside the further psychometric development of personality testing. These developments occurred at a time when American eugenicists— including psychologists—were transitioning to a “positive” form that emphasized marriage and mothering.

Streetlights and Shadows This article addresses the cognitive obstacles to, and opportunities for, police getting the individualized suspicion judgment right.' This article makes a simple assumption: people suffer and benefit from certain common ways of thinking, and police are people too.2 Granted, police have the benefit of certain experience, training, and resulting intuitions about how to do their jobs that laypersons lack. And how good are the decisions we make based on these instant perceptions? Consider speed dating, for example. 3 In speed dating, we rely on “thin slicing”—basingpost, our impression of another person solely on an abbreviated behavioral glimpse.1 During a speed-dating event, we may interact round-robin style with as many as 12 possible partners, with each individual “date” lasting on average from 3 to 8 minutes. While some believe we should be able to make judgments about how close we want to become with a potential dating partner during such a short time—even as short ascopy, 30 seconds—others are not so sure.2 Interestingly, researchers report that thin slicing produces judgments that are pretty accu- rate.3 Within 30 seconds, speed-dating participants find themselves either attracted to someone or not.

The conditions of the context of journals considered for the manifestation of bias are: a) articles written in a regional language other than English, which restricts the group of reviewers; b) specific theme, which requires reviewers who specialize in the theme and predominantly belong to the same professional group; and c) publication of articles associated with the interests of the professional group to which the reviewers belong. Our proposition is that under these conditions, articles containing messages in keeping with the concerns and demands of the group to which the reviewers belong, could be viewed more favorably reviewers, thereby benefiting from the halo effect.
